Horror Writers of America launches Haunted Library of Horror Classics

3/6/2019

Picture
The Horror Writers Association (HWA) and Poisoned Pen Press, an imprint of Sourcebooks, are pleased to announce the "Haunted Library of Horror Classics," a new series of reprinted horror classics. Now some of the genre's seminal titles will be easily available to modern readers. The series editors include acclaimed writer and editor Eric J. Guignard, and multiple-award-winning editor and annotator Leslie S. Klinger.

HWA's President Lisa Morton said, "This is a project we've been working on behind the scenes at HWA for years, because keeping the genre's classics alive is something I consider a key part of HWA's core mission goals. I can't imagine better choices to edit this series than Eric and Les, and I'm thrilled to be working with everyone at Poisoned Pen and Sourcebooks."

Each volume will feature an introduction by a noted horror expert and/or author, and every book will close with a study guide for classroom use. The editions (quality trade paperback) are aimed to be reasonably priced for a mass market. The first release, Gaston LeRoux's Phantom of the Opera, will be introduced by New York Times-bestselling author and multiple Bram Stoker Award® winner Nancy Holder.

The other initial titles selected are: The Beetle by Richard Marsh; Vathek by William Beckford; House on the Borderland by William Hope Hodgson; The Parasite and Other Tales of Terror by Arthur Conan Doyle; and The King in Yellow by Robert Chambers.

"When approached by HWA to consider this project, I was intrigued by the opportunity to introduce a new readership to the masterpieces of this much underappreciated genre," said Robert Rosenwald, Director of Development, Poisoned Pen Press. "And to work with such luminaries as Eric J. Guignard and Leslie Klinger, providing each title with a study guide, and making them available at reasonable prices made the Haunted Library irresistible."

We were happy to welcome Neil Steinberg from the Chicago Sun-Times to the Sourcebooks HQ this past week. Mr. Steinberg was given an inside look at the inner workings of Sourcebooks, and we are thrilled to share his article that was published yesterday, January 20, 2019.

"By being nimble and collaborative — and at one low point taking a mortgage on Raccah’s home — the company has managed to thrive during changing times," Steinberg writes.

Anna Michels promoted to Editorial Director, Sourcebooks and Poisoned Pen Press

1/14/2019

We are thrilled to share that Anna Michels has been promoted to Editorial Director, Sourcebooks and Poisoned Pen Press.

Shana, Editorial Director for Sourcebooks and Sourcebooks Landmark, joins us in congratulating Anna:

"Anna first joined us as an editorial intern, and she has been a tremendous asset ever since. Every year she has steadily taken on more responsibility and leadership with her trademark unflappable attitude.  In 2015, it was Anna’s idea to begin in-depth research on the mystery category with an eye toward experimentation and hopeful eventual expansion. Anna spearheaded our education and shortened our overall learning curve, building on knowledge and authors that put us in exactly the right frame to have Poisoned Pen Press join us this year.  Along with Robert, Barbara, and the entire PPP team, Anna has managed the PPP transition gracefully, shepherding an entirely new imprint into Sourcebooks.

Anna’s acquisitions in adult nonfiction and with Sourcebooks Landmark have left their mark on our point-of-sale figures and on readers, and her agent contacts continue to yield interesting and fruitful projects and partnerships due to her committed relationship-building. When the long-established 1-2-3 Magic brand joined us, Anna took the helm in working with an author used to being in charge of his own publishing company. Anna’s authors love her, whether she’s helping them title a new cozy series (did you know Anna’s very punny?) or rebrand an entire nonfiction program, and that care and attention she devotes to her books is part of what makes her such a great editor.  In her new role Anna takes on the leadership of the adult nonfiction program as well as the internal leadership of Poisoned Pen Press. From the new SNAP initiative to bedrock authors like Tom Phelan to exciting new works like MOTHERHOOD SO WHITE and THE GENIUS HABIT, Anna’s work on proactively adapting to a changing marketplace and growing nonfiction is poised to reap success.

We’re so excited for Anna to take this next step in her career and we look forward to seeing what she’ll bring us in the future!"

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of Sourcebooks First New York Times Best Seller

12/10/2018

We are happy to share that December 9, 2018 is the 20th anniversary of the first appearance by a Sourcebooks title on the New York Times bestsellers list!

In December of 1998, We Interrupt This Broadcast by Joe Garner, with CDs narrated by Bill Kurtis, appeared on the Hardcover Nonfiction list.

In 1998 Sourcebooks was still a very small publisher, with no concept that making the New York Times list was even possible — or how one found out about it. That fall, we shipped thousands of copies of We Interrupt This Broadcast (a $45 value, complete with CDs) and the enthusiasm about the book by our bookselling partners was incredible.

On a late Wednesday afternoon in December, a bookstore called us to say we had made the New York Times bestseller list. They emphasized that "we" had made the list, which was fitting then and now:  the Sourcebooks team includes our authors, of course, and it also includes our partners and champions in the bookselling and librarian communities. They are the folks who are boots-on-the-ground during the holiday season, working tirelessly to put just the right book in the right reader’s hands. We applaud them – we’re proud to be on a team together.
