Esteemed Chinese Children’s Publisher CCPPG Grants World English Rights to Sourcebooks for Children’s Science Book Series

3/24/2018

Picture
Sourcebooks, a leading independent book publisher, has preempted world English rights to Chris Ferrie’s Red Kangaroo series from China Children’s Press & Publication Group (CCPPG). The deal gives Sourcebooks world English and North American Spanish rights, and comes ahead of the Bologna Book Fair, where China is this year’s guest of honor.

The new series is a way to bring the world of physics and mathematics to the graduates of Baby University. The Red Kangaroo Physical Quiz series explains, in simple terms, the theories of classical, mechanical, optical, and quantum physics. An abundance of illustrations makes learning physics fun and easy for children, and not-so-daunting for parents, too. (10 titles; ages 4-8) Lively conversations between “Dr. F” and the adorable Red Kangaroo character introduce young readers to scientific concepts using real-life examples.
Sourcebooks will be re-positioning the series for the U.S. market, starting with 10 books in spring 2019.

In less than a year (the first books launched in May 2017), Sourcebooks has sold 480,000 copies of Chris Ferrie’s Baby University series. In addition to two new books coming in April – Quantum Computing for Babies by Chris Ferrie and whurley, and Scientist, Scientist, Who Do You See?, which explains to young readers how famous scientists changed the world – Sourcebooks will publish seven new Baby University books in 2018, with more to come in 2019.

CCPPG owns Juvenile & Children Reading Experience Wonderland (the Wonderland), a website (www.ccppg.com.cn), China Children Audio-Visual and Electronic Publishing House and a range of educational services branded as "Heart-to-Heart Sister". The Wonderland, a base to promote reading among young people, is China's largest professional bookstore for children and teenagers. In 2013, as shown in the "2012 Press and Publication Industry Analysis Report" developed by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of The People's Republic of China, CCPPG ranks the first in terms of total economic value among all children's publishers in China.

In October, Sourcebooks signed The Gotham Group as its exclusive representative for all film and television projects. Moxie’s decades of licensing and branding experience will help us extend the reach of our authors, and I am incredibly excited to be working with them.”

Moxie & Company will seek new opportunities for several Sourcebooks product lines, including Baby University™, a bestselling children’s book series that includes Quantum Physics for Babies, Rocket Science for Babies, ABCs of Science, and Goodnight Lab, among others.

Moxie will also seek branded merchandise licensing for beloved children’s book author Marianne Richmond, and the New York Times and USA Today bestselling How to Catch… children’s book series by Adam Wallace (How to Catch a Leprechaun, How to Catch an Elf, and How to Catch a Monster).

“We are so thrilled to be working with Sourcebooks and their delightful, innovative brands to expand the success of the books into fun, unique products and promotions,” said Laura Becker, cofounder and partner of Moxie & Company. “Plus, an added benefit is we are learning a lot from the Baby University books…never too old!”

Read the full review in the April 2018 issue of The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books.

Picture
Booklist reviews The Doughnut Fix by Jessie Janowitz:
Janowitz accurately portrays the chaotic emotions moving can trigger in this sweet, relatable story. Tristan’s doughnut endeavor will hold wide appeal as a pleasure read, and may inspire young foodies or entrepreneurs to think beyond the lemonade stand.

Picture
Booklist reviews Inky the Octopus by Erin Guendelsberger:
This jaunty tale of derring-do imagines Inky the octopus' real-life escape from the National Aquarium of New Zealand from Inky's point of view... a refrain echoing Inky’s desire to be free in the open sea anchors the story and offers support to young readers and listeners.
Read the full review in the April 1 issue of Booklist.

Picture
The Bulletin for the Center For Children's Books reviews The Stupendously Spectacular Spelling Bee by Deborah Abela:
Readers will revel in India’s development as she learns not only what it means to be a spelling champion but also what it means to be a good daughter, sister, and friend all rolled into one. Whether readers are interested in family humor, friendship, competition, or just plain fun, this will have something to offer.
You can read the full review in the April 2018 issue of The Bulletin for the Center for Children's Books.

Picture
Kirkus reviews Seven Bad Cats by Monique Bonneau:
The rhymed couplets roll like the waves, and the watercolor-and-ink illustrations, mostly full-bleed, double-page spreads, are pale, simple, and charming. The kitties' curves as they leap and pounce (and play with everything) and the young sailor's emotions are deftly displayed in just a few lines. Captures the dual nature of the feline friend, often "bad" but always your buddy.
Read the full review online here or in the April 1 issue of Kirkus.
