What Bestseller Lists Really Tell Us About A Book's Popularity
AILSA CHANG, HOST: When Donald Trump Jr.'s new book first topped the New York Times bestseller list, it raised eyebrows and not just because of who the author is. Beside the title of the book, which is "Triggered: How The Left Thrives On Hate And Wants To Silence Us," was a dagger. That symbol meant a portion of the book sales were made in bulk, which led some to question whether Trump deserved the top billing. The answer, as NPR's Rose Friedman explains, is complicated.
Bouchercon is an annual celebration of mystery books and authors. This year was the first year we attended as Poisoned Pen Press (previously attended as Sourcebooks Landmark). We held a number of activities for all, invited 22 of our authors, as well as mystery fans and influencers.
Poisoned Pen Press sponsored the hospitality suite on Saturday afternoon. We brought a pallet of books to give away, attendees started lining up a half hour before our suite opened. By noon, we had 150 people in line – the room was packed, and it was absolutely incredible!
Making a Difference Halfway Around the World
The fourth largest book fair in the world, The Sharjah International Book fair (SIBF), was held in October. This 10-day literary event in Sharjah, UAE, celebrates the power of literacy and features written works of the Arab world. With an estimated 2.28 million visitors, 1,874 exhibitors, and representatives from 77 countries around the world, SIBF encompasses book lovers across the globe and offers readers and industry professionals an opportunity to gather, learn, and support the importance of literacy.
Attendees can enjoy panel discussions, workshops, and book signings before and throughout the conference. During the professional conference before the SIBF, I gave a workshop called ‘Taking Your Publishing Company to the Next Level’ to approximately 250 professional book publishers from all over the world. The workshop was organized by Andrea Chambers with NYU’s School of Publishing
