What is a Story Book Trail?
A Story Book Trail, sometimes called a StoryWalk®, combines literacy with physical activity and time in nature. When participating in a Story Book Trail, children and adults follow “trail signs”—pages from a children’s picture book that have been attached to wooden stakes. Walkers stroll down a path reading the story as they go. StoryWalks® have been installed in 50 states and 11 countries including, Germany, Canada, England, Bermuda, Russia, Malaysia and Pakistan!
Story Book Trails are a great way to bring a community together, and partnering with two or more organizations helps spread the word to the general public. Successful Story Book Trail partnerships have included: libraries, state and local parks, schools, environmental groups, and community-based service clubs and organizations.
The Story Book Trail concept may be adapted to a wide variety of locations. Select a site easily accessible to the public, such as a paved walkway or an established trail through a park. A trail that’s about ½ mile long works well for small children.
Noteworthy Ideas for your Story Book Trail
• Provide a crafts table related to the book at the end of the trail.
• Make a “Guest Book” available for participants to leave their comments. • In winter, create a Story Book Trail by having the “trail signs” posted in the front windows of businesses along one side of a street.
Please note: StoryWalk@ is a registered Trademark of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, Montpelier, Vermont. If you use this terminology you must comply with specific guidelines. However, anyone can hold this type of event and call it something else, such as “Story Book Trail,” “Book Walk,” or “Path of Pages."
