Agile Publishing Model.

Futurist David Houle

Welcome to the future!  The future of humanity and the future of publishing.

I am very excited about my new book Entering the Shift Age and the new model of publishing Sourcebooks has created, the Agile Publishing Model (APM). The APM is an innovative platform that allows authors to make their content available faster and in a more flexible format. For example, to suit your needs and interests as readers, Sourcebooks offers a variety of ways to purchase the content of Entering the Shift Age, either in individual parts (“mini eBooks”) or as a whole. (Check out “How to Purchase: The Agile Way”.) You can learn more about the APM by watching the video below.

This is part of the future of publishing. Now let’s turn toward our own future, the future of humanity.

We now live in the Shift Age, a time of transformation that will be regarded by future historians as one of the most significant periods in human history. The Shift Age is one of those inflection points or times when much of humanity will change how we live, how we think, how we interact with each other and what we do.

People will obviously still own homes, cars, and everything else in the Shift Age. It is just that the necessity to own is lessening through time. This is connected to the next consumption trend.

Years ago I described the 2007-2010 recession as the “too much stuff” recession. Millions of us realized that we had stuff we hadn’t ever used, hadn’t worn and had not read, watched or listened to. The delusional debt driven sense of wealth ended. We realized, in the developed countries, that less is more. Less stuff means more time. Less stuff means more liquidity. Less stuff means more mobility. Less stuff means reallocation of funds to experiences. Less obligations means more freedom.

What we own and what we have will become ever less of who we are in the Shift Age. The “look at me” phenomenon based upon extravagant display of things will decline in the developed countries. The developing countries will still be going through that cycle well into the 2020s. This will be a source of contrast, and within the realm of Spaceship Earth discussion a source of conceptual conflict.
The stuff we buy will be long lasting and environmentally sounder than in the past. Sustainable live styles will be the model.

Conscious Capitalism

Creating wealth and the sharing of it. Making money with a social consciousness. Aligning the purchase of anything with some good work. Creating motivations to purchase that speak to one’s deeper sense of self or to one’s higher sense of self.

All of these ideas are now in ascendancy in the world and will continue. The contexts of the Earth Century, Retrofitting the 20th century and ultimately an evolutionary shift of consciousness are what will drive these trends. The more collaborative and collective mindsets of the Shift Age generations will lead these trends. As they move up the social and economic levels of the world they will make conscious capitalism the next stage of how to look at economics. The self absorbed, planet be damned, growth for growths’ sake of the last 200 years period of economic expansion, though it will survive to some degree, will be viewed as a stage of capitalism now passed.

Again this will rapidly grow in the developed countries first and then migrate to the developing countries by the 2020s.
