Agile Publishing Model.

Futurist David Houle

Welcome to the future!  The future of humanity and the future of publishing.

I am very excited about my new book Entering the Shift Age and the new model of publishing Sourcebooks has created, the Agile Publishing Model (APM). The APM is an innovative platform that allows authors to make their content available faster and in a more flexible format. For example, to suit your needs and interests as readers, Sourcebooks offers a variety of ways to purchase the content of Entering the Shift Age, either in individual parts (“mini eBooks”) or as a whole. (Check out “How to Purchase: The Agile Way”.) You can learn more about the APM by watching the video below.

This is part of the future of publishing. Now let’s turn toward our own future, the future of humanity.

We now live in the Shift Age, a time of transformation that will be regarded by future historians as one of the most significant periods in human history. The Shift Age is one of those inflection points or times when much of humanity will change how we live, how we think, how we interact with each other and what we do.

The Concept of Place is Being Eviscerated

But now in the Shift Age, one of the key limitations of the concept of place has ended. Place is no longer a restriction on our ability to communicate at will with people in any other place. While it may be decades or perhaps centuries before a "beam me up Scotty" transportation device exists to physically transport us across places, we now have the historically unprecedented ability to transcend place when we communicate.
In Chapter Five, we discussed the Accelerating Electronic Connectedness of the planet, one of the three Forces of the Shift Age. This force is not only connecting us all in ways never before experienced, it is also eviscerating the concept of place. As of this writing, there are more than 7 billion of us and 5.6 billion have a cell phone of some sort. This near ubiquity creates the reality that there is no time, distance, or place any longer limiting human communication.

Accelerating Electronic Connectedness eliminates time and distance from human communication, greatly contributing to the pervasive sense of speed in today's world, creating a transformational immediacy of human connectedness.

We have spent 150,000 years on Earth as modern humans. Only in the last 200 years have we had any type of communication that bridged distance and place with any relative immediacy. Only in the last three years have we been able to completely transcend place in communications.

We now have the potential capability of talking or texting to any one of the 5.6 billion other humans who have a cell phone, regardless of where they are or what time it is. Due to the Accelerating Electronic Connectedness of humanity, we can also access information, news, videos, sports, and movies wherever we are. Sixty years ago the only way to access a movie was to go to a place called a theater. Until the advent and widespread availability of high-speed wireless Internet connectivity in the last few years, we had to be in our home or theater to watch a movie. Now we can watch it on a bus or in a coffee shop.

We are wherever we are and can communicate with anyone else wherever they are. To many of us this has quickly become the new reality, which dulls us to how incredibly profound a change this truly is.

On a higher level, if you contemplate the Flow to Global and the Flow to the Individual within this context, you can see how powerful these forces are in the redefinition of place. As individuals we are connected regardless of place, so right now we have the power to exercise our individual power on a global scale. This true reality simply did not exist until the Shift Age.
