Excerpt
From Chapter One:
Scotland 1437, McLeren land
Fire could be a welcome sight to a man when he’d been riding a long time and the sun had set, leaving him surrounded by darkness. But the sight of flames on the horizon could also be the most horrifying thing any laird ever set his eyes on.
Torin McLeren wanted to close his eyes in the hopes that the orange flames illuminating the night might not be there when he opened them again. He could smell the smoke on the night air now but didn’t have the luxury of allowing the horror to turn his stomach. He was laird, and protecting his holdings was his duty.
Digging his spurs into his horse, he headed toward the inferno. Wails began to drown out the hissing flames. Laments carried on the night wind as wives and mothers mourned bitterly. The scent of blood rose above the smoke, the flickering orange light illuminating the fallen bodies of his clansmen. He stared at the carnage, stunned by the number of dead and wounded. He might be a Highlander and no stranger to battle, but this was a village, not a piece of land disputed and fought over by nobles. This was McLeren land and had been for more than a century.
A horror straight out of hell surrounded him. Mercy hadn’t been present here—he’d seen less carnage after fighting the English. The slaughter was almost too much to believe or accept. His horse balked at his command to ride forward, the stallion rearing up as the heat from the blaze became hot against its hide. Torin cursed and slid from the saddle. Every muscle in his body tightened, rage slowly coming to a boil inside him. Hands reached out to him, grasping fingers seeking him as the only hope of righting the wrong that had been inflicted on them.
His temper burned hotter than the fire consuming the keep in front of him. They suffered raids from time to time, but this was something else entirely. It was war. The number of bodies lying where they had fallen was a wrong that could not be ignored. Nor should it be. These were his people, McLerens who trusted in his leadership and his sword arm for protection.
“Justice…”
One single word but it echoed across the fallen bodies of men wearing the same plaid he did. Every retainer left to keep the peace was lying dead, but they had died as Highlanders. The ground was littered with the unmoving forms of their attackers. His gaze settled on one body, the still form leaking dark blood onto his land, the kilt drawing his interest. Lowering his frame onto one knee, Torin fingered the colors of his enemy. The fire lit the scarlet and blue colors of the McBoyd clan. His neighbor and apparently now his enemy.
McBoyds? It didn’t make sense. These were common people. Good folk who labored hard to feed their families. Every McLeren retainer stationed there knew and accepted that they might have to fight for their clan, but that did not explain the number of slain villagers. There was no reason for such a slaughter. No excuse he would ever swallow or accept. McLerens did not fear the night, be they common born or not. While he was laird, they would not live in fear.
“There will be justice. I swear it.” His voice carried authority, but to those weeping over their lost family, it also gave comfort. Torin stood still only for a moment, his retainers backing him up before he turned and remounted his horse. He felt more at home in the saddle, more confident. His father had raised him to lead the McLerens in good times and bad. He would not disappoint him or a single McLeren watching him now.
“Well now, let us see what the McBoyds have to say for themselves, lads.”
Torin turned his stallion into the night without a care for the clouds that kept the moonlight from illuminating the rocky terrain. He was a Highlander, after all. Let the other things in the dark fear him.
Reviews
And I’m actually glad I did. This is my first book by Ms. Wine and I’m pleasantly surprised.
She grabs the reader right away with Torin McLeren, while on his way home, seeing smoke dancing against the sky from that direction. Racing toward the village he discovers devastation. Many dead, homes burned, and revenge coursing through his veins. I was taken with Torin immediately, feeling for him, living his grief with him. I wanted revenge too.
When he finds out it’s a neighboring clan who rained such destruction on his people, Torin and his men are on the hunt for their leader to bring him justice. In doing so, however, he learns his enemy’s daughter is on her way to be married to a traitor, so Torin intercepts the bride to be. He’s a Highlander, after all. Taking women for retaliation is what they do.
Of course, it takes a strong woman to stand up to a Highlander, and Shannon McBoyd is as independent as they come, even though she’s been belittled and beaten by her father all her life - just because she’s female. He has no use for a daughter. Her coming wedding is something Shannon’s looking forward to, only to be out of her father’s house and from under his cruel rule. When she’s taken by Laird McLeren and learns of her father’s traitorous actions, she truly now has no one to depend on but herself.
Being in enemy territory only makes Shannon stronger. The McLeren clan doesn’t know how she’s had to live all of her life, so their respect may be grudging but it’s eventually given all the same. And their arrogant laird has shown her compassion and gentleness, causing her to alter her plans in destroying him for taking her from her life. Torin is determined to have Shannon, to settle down and start a family. It’s the McBoyd blood that may keep them from the happiness they’ve just found, however, because the final decision on her fate is out of Torin’s hands.
I really like this hero and heroine and they work very well together, even despite all the odds against them. The secondary characters are also quite likable, and I especially like the way Torin’s men protect Shannon, even to the point of standing up to their laird once or twice. There’s a couple of issues here and there, i.e., the dialogue sounds too modern once in a while, but it’s not enough to take that much away from the story.
I’m looking forward to next book in the trilogy.
Grade: B
When Laird Torin McLeren comes home to find the slaughtered bodies of his clansmen – he is not only saddened but knows there is only one thing for this kind of madness - to get revenge.
With some long hard ride and people in the right places, Torin finds out who has done this dastardly deed quite quickly and he aims to get his own back. Doing what all highlanders are prone to do, he gathers his own around him and plot and plan how best to go about storming another mans keep.
Torin is however not a man of haste and it is this sense of patience that enables him to be in the right place at the right time to find out about Shannon McBoyd, daughter of the man that Torin is aiming to bring down. Not only has Torin come to know of Shannon but he also becomes privy to a most unsavoury plot and not one to his liking or even one that is likely to benefit anyone from the highlands.
Shannon is the daughter of a madman, a man who has no use for girls except to line is own pockets. Shannon although restricted from some of the yearly enjoyment of the maids of her time - has been allowed to do her own thing and as much she knows the heavy hand of her father she is still opinionated and barely knows when to keep her mouth shut. Now after years of being neglected and living as the afterthought of her father, she is now to become a pawn in a madman’s game – but before she has had time to fully settle into her faith she is kidnapped by the last man she would expect – a man out for revenge – Torin McLeren.
Once these two connect it is a battle of wills with some nice moments of pleasure tossed in, but Torin can’t give his sole attention to Shannon as he has other matters to resolve that involves home and country, while Shannon is a child of a traitor and as such she is expected to be hang with her traitorous clan.
Something had to give eventually – because what a highlander kidnaps he keeps and one Torin McLeren has kidnapped Shannon McBoyd and he aims to keep her come hell or high water.
I have had some weird reasons for reading books, like the cool cover art, the blurb or even recommendation from my mom but I think my reason for reason TO CONQUER A HIGHLANDER is probably the weirdest for me.
I read this book because Mary Wine is the other voice of Dawn Ryder – An author that I have read and liked alot and am awaiting the next book in one of her series. As the next book is taking a bit of time I thought I would see what was keeping her up at nights. (see I told you it was a crazy reason)
After starting TO CONQUER A HIGHLANDER, it took me a little bit to get into – due to no fault of the author or the quality of the work, but more due to the fact that I have not read one of these book for almost twelve years.
Highlanders books for me are generally the same overall plot line, some power struggle between the people at the top of the food chain, pretty much an unhealthy amount of back stabbing and some neck stretching depending on how traitorous the bad guys are. Then at the lower level where the love interest comes in – as in TO CONQUER A HIGHLANDER, this is where the actual action takes place, this is where I normally get most of my enjoyment and it was no different with this my first Mary Wine Highlander book.
With all the above said I ended up liking this book ALOT. Firstly I liked the nice mix of characters in this book, not only were Shannon and Torin a good balance of strength and weakness, but with enough back history on them both I was prone to overlook some of the more TSTL moments of Shannon and most of the highhanded ways of Torin. I thought they were perfect for each other and their dance of tease and will he, wont she felt more like a courtship than a struggle to get the other to bend to their will.
The support cast were just perfect, Torin’s two friends who will eventually get their own book were not only a support to Torin and the highlander’s cause, but they were the main source of most of the levity in the book. I ended up having a smirk or two at their expense.
No journey to the highlands would be complete if there was not skulduggery afoot and there was at every level here. I thought Ms Wine got this element of the book totally right. The in-house struggles Torin had to deal with, while showing that despite the ruthlessness of these highland men – some actually had the sense of building for the future and it is only by banding together and plotting that things will move and get done.
The fine print of the book was great and I really enjoyed the pace set by the author. One word of warning, if you are like me, one of those readers who suddenly read in the language of the Highlands when you read these book, this is no different. Even with me adjusting to the lingo it has a nice pacing to it.
Other than Shannon’s and Torin’s struggle to fit together, there is definately a sense of right or wrong to this book and anyone or anything that falls in-between is up to no good and you know them as soon as they make an appearance. No good book would be good without these people and I look forward to Ms. Wine fleshing out more of these characters in future books- as these people tend to be the catalyst that makes or breaks a plot.
Bottom Line
Now that I am aware of what is keeping Ms Wine up at nights – I will be adding the next book in this series to my TBR list as I want to find out what happens next to these highland men. TO CONQUER A HIGHLANDER was a great introduction for me back into the world of the highlanders and without a doubt this was definitely down to the authors style and her direct approach to the plotline.
Mary Wine delivers the goods in this new book. Each of the element of delicious, sizzling romance and intriguing historical backdrop blend together to make a fantastic read. Shannon Boyd is the fiery heroine and Laird Torin McLeren the ruthless, yet gentle rogue who steals her heart. Youll enjoy every minute of this read.
Kidnapping is one of my favorite romance plots. Stockholm Syndrome is not a good thing in real life but in a romance novel, it is ideal. There is almost always great tension between the characters and lots of action and drama. That was no different with this one. There was plenty of drama, action and romance to be had in To Conquer a Highlander.
Torin was one of the most interesting Highlander characters I have ever come across. He was such a nice guy. He was funny with a bit of a scampy sense of humor. I am used to more warrior-like Highlander characters. He was definitely different. He was still tough but had that sweet and funny side to him that I really liked. Shannon, on the other hand, got on my nerves a bit. I always have trouble liking characters that remind me of myselfstubborn, bull-headed and with a bit of a temper. I did like her because and the moments where she annoyed me were outweighed by the moments where I really liked her. I also really loved the tension and banter between Shannon and Torin.
The descriptiveness was one of the best parts of To Conquer a Highlander. Everything is so detailed and researched. My favorite was the detailed description of the dungeon. It was so gruesome and realistic (not that I would know). The battle scenes were also amazing. It is a very rare romance novel that can pull off a good battle scene and Mary Wine did in To Conquer a Highlander.
If you like Highlander romances, I highly recommend that you pick this one up if for nothing else but the amazing descriptions (and Torin is kinda pretty too).
I thoroughly enjoyed To Conquer a Highlander it has just the mix of action, danger, intrigue and romance that I look for in historical romances.
The book opens with the McBoyds violating the peace and needlessly slaughtering their neighbors. Its meant to be a political act, but its clearly one of greed and envy. It doesnt sit well with Shannon and we quickly learn that Shannon has a strong sense of honor and loyalty. She makes for a likable heroine with her quick wit and courage. Her captor is quick to recognize her strengths and to treat her fairly there are few needless misunderstandings and temper tantrums. Shannon and Torin face real danger and obstacles to being together which makes for an engaging and satisfying read!
To travel to a different time and place all one has to do is pick up a copy of Mary Wine’s TO CONQUER A HIGHLANDER.
Laird Randal McBoyd raids McLeren land in an attempt to show the Earl of Atholl that he is on his side in his bid to be King of Scotland. McBoyd assumes Atholl will send more men to help fight off the Highlanders when they retaliated. McBoyd promises his daughter to Atholl’s nephew to seal the bargain.
Shannon McBoyd is awaken and told she is being sent to Atholl’s nephew to wed. Though she knows her place, Shannon questions her father’s actions and feels his rage with a slap to her face.
Meanwhile, Laird Torin McLeren is enroute to confront McBoyd for his actions. When McLeren discovers Shannon enroute to wed, he decides to kidnap her.
That’s when the fun begins despite the warring between the clans.
Shannon is a strong minded, independent woman in an era when women were less than second class citizens. She worked hard, but always felt women should be equal to men.
Torin is a handsome, brave Highlander who protects his people and rules with compassion. He believes in love in a marriage, not just an arrangement to further clans and land holdings.
The back and forth bantering between Torin and Shannon makes for most enjoyable reading. Author Mary Wine’s beautiful descriptions of the countryside and wonderful dialect transport the reader to Scotland.
TO CONQUER THE HIGHLANDER is a historical romance that will take your breath away. Some scene are quite intense and will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. This is the first in a trilogy of sexy Scottish Highland romances.
Being of Scottish ancestry I am always interested in books set in the highlands. Though I have questioned the authenticity of some romance novels set in this area and time period Mary Wine does a wonderful job with her new novel, To Conquer a Highlander. She has great insight into the dynamics of the Scottish clans and what it meant for women living during these times. Wines descriptions of Highland life, make the reader feel as though they are right there with the characters experiencing what they are experiencing and seeing what they are seeing.
Shannons character is a strong woman who is living in a desperate time and situation. The reader is almost happy when Shannon is kidnapped because any situation would have to be better than her own home life. I think many readers will identify with Shannon and feel her struggle as she must decide between the man she loves and the father who raised her.
Torins character is loyal to God and country and will do anything to save the King, even if that means kidnapping his enemies daughter. What he doesnt expect was to fall in love with her. He is drawn to her in a way that he has never experienced before and his loyalties are truly tested as he learns to trust in someone other than himself.
I truly enjoyed this book and Im happy to be able to offer two copies for giveaway. Check out the details here. If you love historical fiction, a good romance, or the Scottish highlands this is the book for you.
To Conquer a Highlander is available now from your favorite bookseller.
I give this one 4 out of 5 apples from my book bag.
My thoughts:
I have read numerous Scottish themed romances, but none compare to this amazing book. I found that I was unable to put it down and the 300 plus pages flew by in one sitting. To Conquer a Highlander will have you sitting on the edge of your set with its intensity. I found that the characters were well formed, and historically true to the period from which they came. The one thing that peaked my interest about To Conquer a Highlander was the way that Mary Wine created the character of Shannon. Normally in romance book we see the woman portrayed as weak, pathetic, and helpless, with Shannon she was a strong willed character that could do for herself, which was a refreshing change.
To Conquer a Highlander is a definite page-turner, with a plot that never slows. It should be at the top of everyone’s to be read list. Although please note that this book does contain some steamy romance scenes.
This was my first encounter with a book from Mary Wine and I do have to say that it will not be my last. She has become one of my favorite romance authors.
To Conquer a Highlander is the first book in the Scottish Highland Trilogy please look for my review of Highland Hellcat coming in October.
Shannon McBoyd was born a daughter to a man who thought her worthless, who took every opportunity to verbalize her uselessness through words and fists. Yet despite constant belittlement she matures into a woman with silent strength, a will to survive, and try to see good and purpose where most would only despair; even when her father sends her to marry into a family embroiled in the murder of the king of Scotland.
Torin McLeren was born to a mother and father who married for love, and grew up a child that was deeply loved and cherished. When his uncle remained childless he was sent to train to eventually take his place. Though he was never meant to be laird of the clan McLeren he found himself with the responsibilities of leading and protecting his people. And while he is at an age that demands he marry and produce an heir he holds out hope to find love in a union beneficial to his clan.
While it took me a little while to get into To Conquer a Highlander, and I thought it ended a little abruptly, there were several things that I loved about this story. One of the things that I loved was the fact that there was not a lot of outside conflict once the story really got going. (ie once Torin stole Shannon). Once Torin and Shannon arrived at his holding, the story blossomed and really let the characters shine and become the most important aspect of the book. The reader gets plenty of page time with both Torin and Shannon to get to know them, understand what makes them do the things they do, and watch them as they fall in love. Shannon’s strength and honor is given the chance to be appreciated as well as Torin’s need for love.
Torin has all the best traits of a highland hero. Yes, he’s alpha, but he’s not overbearing. He’s protective without being overprotective. He’s patient, understanding, with a noble sense of honor, and desperately wants the kind of love his parents shared…and finds he wants that with Shannon, not out of revenge or justice but because he’s drawn to her. Torin was one of my favorite things about To Conquer a Highlander…that and his friend Connor (which will happily receive his own story soon).
The story doesn’t get bogged down in the history and conflict that the characters were entangled in even though it plays a part in the plot. It was a backdrop and catalyst to Torin and Shannon love’s story, but didn’t monopolize or try to become as important as the hero and heroine. This story was all about Torin and Shannon…and that is my favorite part of this book. While the love scenes were sensual the moments in between were the most intimate and revealing….that made this story more memorable than your average highland romance.
Mary Wine’s characters in To Conquer a Highlander definitely conquered my heart….both the hero and the heroine as well as their love story. And much like how their story was revealed it was a gradual surrender. The more I read of To Conquer a Highlander the more I loved it. It conquered me little by little, page by page until the very end. I can’t wait for the next book in this series (Torin’s friend Connor in Highland Hellcat).
This book starts off with a violent scene of death and carnage and then takes you on a journey into the kind of violence that the main character Shannon McBoyd has to live on a daily basis. The way that the book begins pulls you in emotionally to the story immediately and all you want is for Shannon to escape from her family. When she was kidnapped I felt relieved because nothing could be worse than the situation she lived in.
This is a brilliant medieval romance and is in my favourite setting, the Scottish Highlands. Torin is the much loved McLeren Laird, new to the head of the clan because Shannons father killed his father. A complicated plot twist but one that makes this a very interesting read. What can I say, the hero is simply delicious and Shannon is strong and willful. What a dynamic combination! This is an incredibly hot, steamy and sexy read. If you are also a fan of medieval romance than this book is a must read, unless of course you have a heart condition, then it should come with a warning!
Despite the fact that Mary Wine has written 27 titles this is the first time Ive read one of her books. However, it wont be the last. My favourite romance sub genre has always been medieval romance and if this book is anything to go on than Mary Wine writes this genre very well. It is the first in a sexy Scottish Highland trilogy.
I was a little hesitant starting this book. I wasnt sure if I was going to like it going into the first chapter. I am so glad I kept reading.
I like the heroine Shannon. She is a strong personality that fits perfectly with the strong willed Torin. The witty dialogue was feisty and fun that was executed in the perfect parts of the book. The sexiness of the book was perfect without going overboard and left me wanting even more. The author does go into detail a lot, but something I was willing to overlook since I loved the characters so much. This was my first read by this author and I definitely will be keeping my eye out for more Scots and Damsels from a wonderful writer!
Used to the callous mistreatment of her tyrannical father, Shannon McBoyd has learned to be strong and independent even though she has no real power. She’s resigned to her lot in life but when she’s shipped off to become the bride of a man she’s never met as a bargaining chip in a deadly political battle for control of Scotland her life takes an unexpected turn. Captured before she can be wed by Torin McLeren, an honorable man and neighboring laird attempting to stop McBoyd raids on his clan, she’s taken instead to the McLeren keep where she’s to be held hostage. Though they should be enemies, Torin and Shannon grow closer, passions flaming, hearts softening, and soon Torin wants to keep Shannon forever, not as his hostage but as his wife. Will they find happiness together or will betrayal and its deadly consequences rip them apart forever?
I love a good medieval romance and Mary Wine has quickly become one of my favorite “go to” authors for this sub-genre. For a fast-paced, emotional story with political intrigue, fascinating secondary characters, a hero and heroine who will capture your heart and plenty of steamy passion, you can’t go wrong with To Conquer a Highlander.
I liked this one. Must have been that whole bride stealing business, those highlanders are such barbarians ;)
This is set at the backdrop of a troublesome time in Scotland. The king is murdered and the heir in hiding. Shannon Boyds father is rooting for the bad guy and wants to marry her off to him, but first he slaughtered some people on his neighbours land. On top of a clan war there could be a civil war coming. But Laird Torin McLeren kidnaps the bride to be and takes her away to his castle. Soon he realises that she is a wildcat.
Shannon has played the obedient daughter all her life but for that she has only got pushed around, her father does not care for her at all. She is at an age that she has started to feel she will never marry and leave his rule. Her lifer has not brought her to her knees. No, she has got spirit and a fiery tongue. But then she gets captured by a sexy highlander and starts thinking things she has never thought before. She is well aware his people hate for what her father has done, and that if her father is branded a traitor she hangs with him. Still through out the book she keeps that fiery tongue and is not afraid to stand her ground and not let anyone walk on her anymore.
Torin is the Laird, but with no heirs and a cousin breathing down his neck. Shannon was only meant to be a prisoner, one that would be treated fair, but not thought about until the time came. Of course the first time they meet words fly and he can see that she has got spirit. A lowland wildcat. Soon he also realises that she was not well treated at her fathers home. She is not like other women that would throw themselves at home because he is laird, or to save their lives from the noose.
There is a dance between these two, with banter, but there is never mistrust. He wants her, she realises that she wants him, but cant have him. I love that he does not back down, he know what he wants, it may be difficult to achieve but hell he will fight for it. He is one sexy alpha highlander, sure there was one thing that got me a bit angry at him. But I understood it, and it was nothing bad, now he wanted to show that he cared. I will not say more, you will find out when you read it. Most of all I like how well he does treat her, and tries.
A strong woman, and man not backing down, and untamed passion when sparks fly. A stolen woman belongs to the capturer and this Highlander will fight for his love.
There was also this other guy, and my eyes went wide and I had to go and check the computer at once. Yes Connor is getting a book of his own. I am sure that one will be good too.
Blodeuedds Cover Thoughts: Sword, yay.
Reason for reading: From sourcebooks
Final thoughts: A highland romance with a sexy Scot, and the bride he has stolen. Sounds like a good recipe for love.
My first Mary Wine book and I am totally hooked! To Conquer a Highlander is the first in a trilogy of sexy Scottish Highland romance, that will only get you addicted and begging for more!
This is the story of Laird Torin McLeren and Shannon McBoyd, two different clans that have been at peace for years until now. Shannons maniacal father the Laird McBoyd just slaughtered villages of the Clan McLeren. Torin is devastated at the loss of life, especially the women and children and is set out for revenge. Although their clans were not friendly, they did not kill each other!
Shannon has been mentally and physically abused from the time she can remember by her father and those of their clan. Laird McBloyd is a ruthless and evil character, women are dirt, and have no opinion. He never things twice about striking his daughter and now she can come in handy, she has become a bargaining chip for him. He is sending her off to marry a man who is posed to become the next King of Scotland. Giving his daughter away will, he thinks, gain him men and provisions to strike out at neighboring clans, especially the McLerens clan to conquer what he believes should be his.
Intercepted on her way to met her fiance Shannon is taken by Torin and his men. Shocked that she is treated with such civility and kindness by him, his men and his people she doesnt know what to think. She is a seriously feisty woman, but she has had to be living with a father like hers. Grown a tough skin and learned to be a complete spitfire, well, she surely lights Torin on fire. He cant help but be attracted by Shannon, she sparks life into him, her personality, her resilience and her strong will, not to mention that she is beautiful. He just cant pass up touching her, kissing her.
Once things get hot and heavy between the two the drama really starts. Torin took Shannon because he knew her fiance was, he knew that without her Laird McBoyd wouldnt have the support he needed to rage war against his clan or any other. They were out numbered! But what he didnt plan on was falling in love with Shannon and the thought of giving her back rips his heart out.
To Conquer a Highlander by Mary Wine will completely ensnare you with its clever dialog and plot, addictively sexy characters who jump out from behind the pages and deliciously steamy love scenes that will leave you wanting for more!
Torin McLeren wants to keep the peace in the Highlands. Unfortunately, his neighborMcBoydwants to take over his land and help in an attempt to overthrow the king. Torin learns of the plot and in order to foil the assassination attempt, he kidnaps Shannon McBoyd and takes her back to his keep. This daughter of his enemy proves to be trouble in her own right.
Shannon is tested and scorned at every turn. The McLeren’s aren’t too forgiving of the McBoyd family. It doesn’t matter that Shannon had nothing to do with the actions of her father…the McLeren’s see her as tainted. She faces scorn and ridicule, yet continues to work hard in the keep and hold her head high. Torin is slowly finding himself captivated by her unquenchable spirit. He wants to know more of this daughter of the enemy…but will getting to know her prove dangerous to his heart?
To Conquer a Highlander is an exciting start to Mary Wine’s new trilogy. Shannon is such a strong girl. She lived through so much abuse in her own home that is difficult for her to accept being treated better as a captive than she was at home. While she’s grateful to Torin for saving her from marrying the Earl of Atholl, she knows that she will have to pay the price for her father’s crimes. She finds one friend in the McLeren home and learns that one person can help turn the tide of hatred into milder resentment.
Torin kidnaps Shannon as a means to an end. He wants to make sure James II isn’t overthrown as king. He needs to help end this attempt at overthrow in order to keep his lands protected by the crown. As he gets to know Shannon, he finds more and more that he likes about her. Too bad there are so many obstacles between them, because he could imagine them together if things were a little different. Eventually, he throws caution to the wind and begins to try to convince her that it’s possible for them to have a life together.
Shannon is so stubborn and strong; it’s hard for her to accept anything that she feels is charity. Yet, her hardened exterior hides the heart of a true romantic. Torin starts to wear her down, just by his kindness. As his captive, her life is better than it ever was as the daughter of the Laird. And the fact that it’s so much better at the McLeren’s scares her to death.
While Torin is a strong man with the fire of a true Highlander, he is also a kind and fair man. He is aware of what sacrifices need to be made for the political good of the nation. But as he comes to care for Shannon, he begins to look for a way to save her from the noose.
A tantalizing story of betrayal becoming honor and beauty coming from the ashes of the past.

In To Conquer a Highlander Shannon McBoyd, twenty something daughter of Laird McBoyd, has found out she will soon be married in her fathers attempt for an alliance.
Shannons father raids rival Torin McLerens land and Laird Torin has vowed vengeance. With the two clans at odds, and McBoyd about to marry his daughter off in an attempt to gain another clans alliance, Torin kidnaps Shannon in order to deter the plans. However, Torin finds out that Shannon is a bit more than he bargained for.
Shannon is smart, sassy and shows no fear.
Being raised by a cold hearted father has taught her how to be strong on the outside, no matter how scared she might really be, this comes in handy for Shannon when she is kidnapped. However, she is surprised at the decency Torin is showing her, even though she is the daughter of a hated rival. Even Torins household staff is treating her better than she expected. When Shannon gets to sleep in a room just one floor under Torins room, she cant help but wonder if Torin plans on taking her to bed. When he unexpectedly kisses her, Shannon finds herself wanting more.
Torin on the other hand, finds himself thinking about Shannon all the time and is feeling protective of her. He doesnt want the time to come where he has to hand her over to her father.
With the sexual tension building up, you begin to wonder when these two are going to get together.
I liked Shannons character. She doesnt sit around waiting to be married off by her father. She doesnt want to enter into an arranged marriage that will most likely be loveless. So when her father tells her that she is to be married off, she is heartbroken.
At twenty-two, she was getting rather past the age for a first wedding. Shannon didnt lament hear years. In truth, she enjoyed being past the age of uncertainty. After her last birthday had passed and no groom sought her hand, a peace had settled over her. A sense of freedom that seemed to fill her with poise and confidence. She liked who she was and did not need a husband to feel complete.
Torin is your perfect hero, hes tall, dark and handsome and has a Scottish Brogue. What more could you want?
I also liked that Torin was patient with Shannon, and cared about her feelings.
And as per my personal preference, I was envisioning Gerard Butler yielding a sword...wearing a kilt....speaking with his hawt Scottish accent.
"I couldnt bear the thought of ye undressing without me there to enjoy it."
"But...surely there were others..."
"I want ye Shannon. It has never been my way to tumble many lasses, only to tumble the one lass who I consider mine, very often."
The love scenes do not start until about halfway through the book, but they are really steamy once you do get to them.
I enjoyed the tension between these two, Shannon trying to deny her attraction for Torin, meanwhile he teases her for blushing bright red whenever he is near.
To Conquer a Highlander is a good beach read. If you want to immerse yourself in romance, while being transported to 15th century Scotland, look no further.
This is my first time reading a book by Mary Wine and I really enjoyed it.
My review:
Shannon McBoyd was no use to her father, being born a girl deemed her worthless in the eyes of her father, Laird McBoyd. Pushed aside most of her life, she now finds that she is to marry a man who may become Scotland’s next king. Unable to do anything but comply with the wishes of her sire, Shannon is packed-up and shipped off to her husband-to-be. Although the Highlander Laird Torin McLeren is determined not to let that happen. Kidnapping the daughter of his enemy, Torin begins to foil McBoyds plans.
Once he has captured Shannon, he is surprised to find that he is drawn to her. Torin begins break through the defensive wall that Shannon has built around her. Will Shannon be Torins downfall or will she be his saving grace?
Something I dont particular enjoy about Historicals (although I should say that this can happen in any type of romance book, not only Historicals) is that at times Ive noticed how minute the hero comes into the picture, the heroine turns into a saaaave-me doormat. This is highly annoying to me. However, this book is an exception, Shannon from the get-go doesnt take any BS from anybody, including Torin, no matter how yummylicious he might be! I liked that. Sure, she wasnt in the best of situation considering shes just being kidnapped by (lets not forget, super hot) the Highlander whose town her mean, horrendous father just attacked and so Torins looking for some revenge.
Another thing I really liked about Shannon is how she owe her sexuality, she wasnt one of those girls who once they start getting the hots for a guy get all scandalous and such. Sure, she was a bit unnerved but thats only understandable since the guy shes getting the hots for just kinda kidnapped her. I liked Torin a lot too. He was manly and alpha but not too alpha to make me want to slap him which is always a good thing!
To Conquer a Highlander is a sexy, fun story about two people falling in love, no matter what obstacles are in their way. Shannon and Torin have an incredible chemistry together and it was really fun to see them spar. Any romance book fan will highly enjoy this book!
Lush Rating: 4!
When Torin McLeren finds out that the McBoyd clan viciously attacked his men, he calls for retribution.
Shannon McBoyd is sickened and disheartened when she sees her father and his men celebrate the death of so many. When she finds out that she is to be married to one of his allies in hopes of overthrowing the future king, she is infuriated that her life means nothing to her family.
Torin learns of the McBoyd’s plan to marry his daughter off and intercepts the wedding party. Taking Shannon back to his keep, he vows that no harm will come to her. But he knows not if he speaks the truth because the sins of her father may come back to haunt her. Can Torin and Shannon fight for her life and the love they have come to know in each others’ arms?
Mary Wine paints a vivid picture of how strong and determined a highlander is. The strength and willpower that Shannon shows throughout the book amazed me. To Conquer a Highlander pits a strong-willed woman against a man with the grit to fight for what he believes in. I highly recommend you read this novel. You will enjoy each moment.
To Conquer a Highlander is an utterly fantastic book with characters that steal your heart. Author Mary Wine has penned a story that excites and captivates, ensuring the reader doesn’t want to forgo the journey even after it’s done.
The heroine, Shannon, is someone you’ll cheer for. Prideful and strong, she has been born to a family that doesn’t appreciate her as she deserves. When things turn sour, she finds herself engaged to a man who would be the new king of Scotland. Through no fault of her own, she becomes an enemy to her own kind, her clan a travesty that would see warring amongst their neighboring clansman. Resigned to her fate, she travels to meet her promised only to be taken by a highlander who is as hard and beautiful as the land he hails from. Torin is more than she anticipates. He is kind where she has only known cruelty, soft where she has only known hard. As he breaks down the walls she’s constructed to protect herself, the story take life that is impossible to turn from.
From the moment I started reading, I was unable to put To Conquer a Highlander down. Tensions run high, ensuring you can’t look away. Torin is determined to avenge his clansmen but refuses to use Shannon as a means to an end while she is determined to meet the fate that has been chosen for her. Yet, their chemistry as enemies that are attracted to one another is palpable, so intense that at times it’s difficult to breathe. As their relationship progresses, you’ll ache for her while you hurt for him. Ms. Wine weaves a very emotional story, and although there are moments I thought I couldn’t handle the intensity, she kept luring me back with the promise of something more. The result is a story, and characters, that you positively love.
To Conquer a Highlander is a definite must read for historical fans. This is the first story I’ve enjoyed by Mary Wine but it will not be the last. She writes with depth and emotion, which is something die hard romance fans will appreciate and cherish. Be sure to pencil this title onto your TBR list.

SUMMARY
Mary Wine captures all the raw, rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands, where tumultuous times bred a race of warrior men and women who fought for country, keep, and kin, and loved as passionately as they lived. In To Conquer a Highlander, Torin McLeren discovers his neighbor is plotting against the rightful heir to the throne of Scotlanda move that is likely to incite an English invasion. Seeking to foil the plot, he takes his neighbors daughter hostage. Fiery Shannon Boyd plans to seduce her captor and then destroy him as retribution. But her plan goes awry when she lures Torin into her bed. In Torin, Shannon finds a passionate lover, a man who values and understands her. A man worth risking her life for for her father will surely kill them both when he discovers what theyve done…
This was such a delicious story with bantering back and forth between Shannon and Torin. The sexual appeal to each other sent sparks flying out in all directions and you just couldnt wait til the two of them got going.
A tough storyline with that of one Clan trying to wipe out another and the struggles that ensue due to the pain both physically and emotionally. Torin is within his rights as Laird of the McLeren Clan to not only lash out at the neighboring McBoyd Clan but he is justified in bringing all of what is going on to the King so that justice can be given. Only problem for Torin is will he lose Shannon to the Kings justice and how much will he have to give of himself to keep what is rightfully his by Highlander Law, what a Highlander steals is rightfully his.
A story full of action on two fronts, sexual between our hero and heroine and Clan vs. Clan for retribution for harm done to its peoples, homes and livestock. A web of deceit against the Crown that will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck as the tension builds throughout the story. A great Summer Read for anyone who needs a taste of the light and fluffy.

Review:
Scotlands king has been murdered and his son, James II is yet a child. The Douglass is taking over ruling the country but others think that James II is not the rightful ruler and theyre willing to fight for that belief.
Shannon McBoyds father is one of those. His greed tells him that backing Athol will bring him more riches and power than backing James II. Hes even made arrangements for Shannon to marry Athol. Based on that and the belief that Athol will be sending reinforcements, Laird McBoyd attacks a holding of his richer, more powerful neighbor, Torin McLeren.
Torin doesnt act first and think later but thinks things through. He knows that the McBoyd realize that he has the might to destroy them so what is behind the attack. When McBoyd sends his daughter out, Torin follows, discovering a plot against the king! To help foil the plan, Torin steals Shannon away and send messengers to the Douglass. Little does he know the trouble that Shannon will be and how his emotions will take him closer to her than he expects.
Mary Wine always does an excellent historical. Her books are exceptionally well researched and extremely authentic. She doesnt gloss over hard times, which really brings the era to life. She also lets you know of daily life and its not always as you imagine.
The characters are very well done. There is life to them. From the main characters to the lowest characters each has a role and they play it well. There is lots of interaction between them giving all of them a well rounded feel.
Torin has a couple of good friends that hang around as hes figuring out what is what. As this is the first book in a series, Im going to assume that these friends will be the main characters in their own books soon. At least, I hope so as they are interesting and fun characters.
The only distracting aspect of this book was the dialog. It didnt flow but felt stilted. Torin seemed to call Shannon lass at least every other sentence which didnt feel right. Add a bunch of ye and a few other "Scottish" words, mix well and throw out there and thats how bad the dialog read. However, the essence behind it was great. It was just getting through it.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and ended staying up past my bedtime to finish it. The historical era that its set in is very interesting. The characters were intriguing. The situations are very realistic. The details are fascinating. I can over look dialog that distracts me. And, Im definitely looking forward to find out about Torins friend and his contract bride!
