From Chapter One
“Come, my beauty, we shall see if we can impress anyone tonight with our skill.”
Brina patted the mare on the side of the neck, and the animal gave a toss of its silken mane. She smothered a laugh before it betrayed to those around just how much she was looking forward to riding out of her father’s castle. She gained the back of the mare, and the animal let out a louder sound of excitement. Brina clasped the animal with her thighs and leaned low over its neck.
“I agree, my beauty. Standing still is very boring.” Brina kept her voice low and gave the mare its freedom. The animal made a path toward the gate, gaining speed rapidly.
Brina allowed her laughter to escape just as she and the mare crossed beneath the heavy iron gate that was still raised.
“Don’t be out too long… Dusk is nearly fallen…” the Chattan retainer set to guarding the main entrance to Chattan Castle called after her, but Brina did not even turn her head to acknowledge the man. Being promised to the church did have some advantages after all. Her undyed robe fluttered out behind her because the garment was simple and lacked any details that might flatter her figure. There were only two small tapes that buttoned toward the back of it in order to keep the fabric from being too cumbersome.
“Faster…”
The mare seemed to understand her and took to the rocky terrain with eagerness. The wind was crisp, almost too chilly for the autumn. Brina leaned down low and smiled as she moved in unison with the horse. The light was rapidly fading, but the approaching night didn’t cause her a bit of worry.
She was a bride of Christ, the simple gown that she wore more powerful even than the fact that her father was laird of the Chattan. No one would trifle with her, even after day faded into night.
But that security came with a price, just as all things in life did. She straightened up as the mare neared the thicket, and she spied her father’s man waiting on her.
Bran had served as a retainer for many years, and he was old enough to be her sire. He frowned at her as she slid from the back of the mare.
“Ye ride too fast.”
Brina rubbed the neck of the horse for a moment, biting back the first words that came to her lips.
“What does it matter, Bran? I am promised to the church, not betrothed like my sisters. No one cares if I ride astride.”
If she had been born first or second to Robert Chattan, there would be many who argued against her riding astride, because most midwives agreed that doing so would make a woman barren.
Bran grunted. “It’s the speed that ye ride with that most would consider too spirited for a future nun.”
Brina failed to mask her smile. “But I shall be a Highland nun, not one of those English ones who are frightened of their own shadows.”
Her father’s retainer grinned. “Aye, ye are that all right, and I pity those who forget it once ye are at the abbey and training to become the mother superior.” Bran turned and made his way into the thicket.
Brina followed him while reaching around to pull her small bow over her head. The wood felt familiar in her grip. It was a satisfying feeling, one for which she might thank her impending future as well. Her sisters had not been taught to use any weapons. They were both promised to powerful men, and the skills of hunting would be something that those Highlanders might find offensive to their pride.
She snorted. Going to the church suited her well indeed, for she had no stomach for the nature of men. She could use the bow as well as any of them. “At least I know that ye will nae go hungry.” Bran studied the way she held the bow, and nodded with approval. “Those other nuns will likely follow ye even more devoutly because ye can put supper on the table along with saying yer prayers.”
“I plan to do much more than pray.” Bran frowned and turned his attention to finding a good spot to hunt from. The burly retainer didn’t believe her.
That thought sobered her. She would have to leave soon, because the seasons were changing and the church was beginning to pressure her father for her. She didn’t dread departing, beyond that it would be hard to leave her sisters, but she did detest the attitude from those around her that she was going to the abbey to do nothing but kneel in submission. Bran was correct about one thing, she would not be a mother superior who allowed the men who came to her church to act like savages the moment they received their absolution.
“Those rabbits will nae be waiting on ye.” Bran spoke up, his voice drifting on the wind from where he was perched in a tree. Despite the gray in his hair, he was still a strong man, and his legs with their knee-high boots were pressed against the bark of the tree to keep him solidly in position. His back was propped against a higher portion of the tree and his bow held steady while he looked back at her. Brina smiled at the challenge in his voice. “I plan to fell one before ye do.”
Bran chuckled and offered her a wink. “Ye sound like a lad.”
“What does it matter if I am less than feminine? Better that I am practical, for that will bring me more comfort in my life with the church, and it will see more good done if I am not delicate but might face injustice with my shoulders set firmly.”
Bran chuckled again. “For certain, it is a good thing that yer father has no’ changed his mind about sending ye to the church, for ye have been raised too long with the knowledge that ye shall have no master upon earth.”
“Now ye are teasing me, for I know the place that shall be mine. I simply plan to make the most of it.”
“Aye, Brina lass, I can hear that ye do, and may God have mercy on those who try to cross ye, for ye will have none upon them.”
Brina shook her head and swept her skirts away from her ankles so that she might climb up the trunk of another tree and perch very much in the same manner Bran was.
“I’d think that ye might be impressed with the fact that I intend to take to my place with such passion.” Bran didn’t answer, but something entered his eyes that looked a bit like pity, and she forced her thoughts on to her arrow and lining it up correctly so that she might be able to ignore the emotions that threatened to send tears into her eyes.
She’d be a good mother superior. The best possible, because her father had given his word on the matter, and it was a poor daughter who shamed her father by refusing the place that he set for her.
Reviews
Brina Chattan has known from birth that she is destined for life as a bride of Christ. Her clothing is plain, any gifts she receives are practical and, unlike her sisters, who are destined for marriage, she has not been taught to defer to men. Shes been raised to be independent, self-sufficient and physically and spiritually pure. What shes become is a head-strong beauty with a will of iron. Kidnapped from her father while en route to the convent to fulfill her obligation to the church, she finds herself the unwilling substitute for her disgraced sister. But Brina is no wilting flower and this highland hellcat is determined to honor her fathers promise to the church. Except...why does Connors smile make her breath catch? And why does his gentle touch make her quiver? And why is she now, after all these years, wondering if, perhaps, shes not destined to be a nun after all?
"Formality would be best between us." She drew in a deep breath. "And distance."
"Why does it matter where I stand?"
Brina blinked, trying to restore her clear thinking. "Because my thoughts become muddled when ye are so near." She was talking without thinking again, and she pressed one hand on top of her lips to still her words when she witnessed how much her confession pleased him. His blue eyes sparkled with it.
His lips twitched up farther, and she discovered her attention focusing on his mouth. A tingle of memory traveled across her lips, awakening a yearning to feel his kiss against them once again. He reached out and gently pulled her hand away from her lips.
"I confess that ye have the same effect on me, lass."
Mary Wine has once again transported me to the ruggedly beautiful Highlands of Scotland for another adventurous and emotional medieval journey with clan and political intrigue aplenty and a love story that warmed my romantic heart. If you havent read any of her books yet, I encourage you to give them a try. As for me, Im anxiously awaiting the next offering from this talented author!
My Review:
Connor is a Highlander all the way through and he is motivated not only to keep his clan strong, but to keep their trust. Being born before his parents marriage, he has struggled to gain his Lairdship and respect. Being ousted as a child by his Uncle and Aunt and forced to sleep in the stable, so Connor knows what it is to earn his keep and his title. Like many Highlanders from that time period Connor has faced and overcome many struggles that have molded him into the man he has become today. When he entered into an agreement with Laird Robert Chattan, he viewed it as a strengthening of his own clan as well as an alliance with another. Yet things are about to change when Roberts daughter decides that she would rather have another. Now not only would Connor’s heir’s be in question the release of his sister would be as well. When Connor see’s his chance at a unquestionable marriage he takes it, no questions asked.
Brina Chattan has known since her birth that she has been promised to the kirk, it’s a fact that has been instilled in her since as long as she could recall. With that being said she has been raised accordingly, and has only learned to respect and fear two men, the Lord and her father. Brina runs wild for a woman of her standing, and even though she has not known the finer things in life, she has learned to take care of herself without the need of a man to do so. One fateful night her future changes forever as she is kidnapped on her way to the abbey that she has been promised to. Now that she is in the arms of Connor Lindsey, she is torn between her duty and her desire.
My thoughts:
I loved this book, in fact I loved it more than the first in the series. Although I have to say that I found Connor intriguing in the book, To Conquer a Highlander, so I was very pleased indeed when he had a book of his own. I love the way that Mary Wine has incorporated the traditions and customs of the era into her story. Normally romance books allow the romance to guide the plot, but Mary Wine’s novel allows the plots/characters to guide the book, all the while placing in the perfect amount of romance.
OVERVIEW
A life of purity, simplicity and devotion was the life that young Brina Chattan has been raised to endure. Promised to the church from birth Brina, the daughter of a noble Scottish laird, knows that the day is quickly approaching when she will leave the walls of Chattan Castle for the solitude of the abbey. The middle daughter in this powerful family Brina is very different from her sisters. Where Deidre and Kaie have been molded into females worthy of serving a husband and bearing a family, Brina has become accustomed to a path of independence and pride. Strong-willed and determined to honor her fathers word to the church, Brina is a walking contradiction. Her feisty demeanor and lack of submission deem her a hellcat by highland standards. How Brina will serve the life required of a nun is questionable to many, but she is strong in her determination to prove that she is capable.
As her time draws to a close at Chattan Castle, Brina is plagued with thoughts of life outside the walls. Her thoughts are at times devoid of the abbey altogether as she begins to ponder what the touch of a man would feel like and why so many woman fall to the whim of their desires. Her curiosity peeks when she witnesses her eldest sister, Deidre, riding from the castle walls to meet a midnight lover. Is the desire so strong that it is worth taking such a risk? Where the fates of the sisters were written in stone just hours before, the actions of Deidre, have left the bond of their fathers word to Deidres promised husband, Connor Lindsey, dishonored and the destiny of the Chattan daughters in peril.
Connor Lindsey has known struggle and pain throughout his young life. Once considered a bastard child with no claim to the Lindsey name, Connor is now the clans powerful laird. He has come a long way from his time of shame and misfortune and is determined to never be made a fool again. When he finds his promised wife, Deidre Chattan, in the arms of a sworn rival his future becomes uncertain. Not wanting his offspring to suffer the constant need to prove their lineage and right to his kingdom, Connor sets out on a path to the Chattan lands. Though he is sure that the stained Deidre will not be his to wed he is determined to hold Robert Chattan to his word. Connor will have a pure Chattan daughter as his wife and he will stop at nothing to ensure it.
Whisked away from the life she has always known behind the walls of Chattan Castle, the pure Brina Chattan must face temptation and desires that she has never known. Will her bond to her destined duty within the abbey hold strong or will fates tempt her in the form of the devilishly handsome Connor Lindsey?
REVIEW
Author, Mary Wine, creates an intriguing world set in the Scottish Highlands in the tale of Highland Hellcat. A tale filled with the fancy flight of chivalry and laced with romantic suspense, Highland Hellcat is a terrific read. The highland heroes are alluring and the heroine a strong-willed beauty. It is a classic tale of the good girl falling for the temptations of the off limits, bad boy. Connor Lindsey is a delectable character. With the power of being a laird and the strength of a Scottish highlander, what isnt to swoon over?
The story not only holds page turning romance, but also a creative, well mastered secondary plot that takes the reader beyond the relationship brewing between Connor and Brina and into the troubles amidst the highlands themselves. Though at times I found myself just wishing that Brina would cave to Connors demands, it was still nice to see her hold her ground in honor of her fathers commitment to the church. Really though, who could deny a lust filled man in a kilt forever?
Once again, this is a fantastic historical romance that will whisk you away to a simpler time when chivalry was not dead, warriors loved as hard as they battled, and your word was stronger than any parchment it was scrolled on.
Rating: 4 Stars
HIGHLAND HELLCAT by Mary Wine is a delightful historical romance set in early Scotland. It is well written with depth, details, twists and turns. The characters are enchanting and engaging. It has Scottish lairds, loyalty, passion, romance, sweet sensuality, wit, family loyalty, betrayal, adventure, keeping the peace between rival Scottish clans, friendships and love conquers all. The hero, Connor, is tough, the laird of the Lindsey’s clan, a Highlander,,honorable, promised to the eldest Chattan clan’s daughter, who he learns has lost her virginity to his enemy, the Douglas clan. He set out to claim one of the Chattan’s clan’s daughter, which he kidnaps while her father is taking her to the abbey. The heroine, Brina, is sassy, smart, devoted, loyal and promised to the church as the Chattan’s youngest and third daughter. Connor kidnaps her while her father is taking her to the abbey. He feels he is owned a daughter, Brina is a virtuous women, a hellcat, for she was raised to obey God only and not man. She is raised not to become a wife, but the bride of Christ. Her eldest sister, betrayed her father by giving in to her sinuous desires, than tossed aside by the man, a Douglas, who only wanted to take her from Connor. Therefore, Connor, does not wish to wed her. Sparks fly become Connor and Brina from the moment they meet until they finally wed. The secondary characters are a story unto themselves for they are also enchanting and engaging. Just let me say I enjoy this author’s books and this one is not a disappointment. I would highly recommend this book especially if you enjoy Highlanders, their women, their lust, honor, fast paced, page turning, love of romance and castles. This book was received for review from the publisher and details can be found at Sourcebooks.
I love the little details in this book, plus the fine conflict and romance.
Brina is one beautiful young woman - inside and out. She is a third daughter of a clan chief and has been raised to go to the Church and become a nun. She is accustomed to humble dress, skills to take care of herself without being waited on, and an absence of touch. She has disciplined herself to honorably accept the duty that her father expects of her. Although you might expect her to be sweet and timid, she has a distinct independent and stubborn streak which may not be totally suited to the convent but help her face adventure!
Connor is kind, but firm and determined. He has had to struggle to gain the leadership and respect of his clan. When his arranged marriage to Brina’s oldest sister, Deirdre, is compromised by Deirdre’s actions, Connor steals Brina. He is clearly frustrated when the “hellcat” continually fights him and refuses to marry him without her father’s blessing.
Obviously Brina and Connor are at odds as to their duties and Brina tries hard to stay obedient to her promise to her father and the church. But she sees the honor in Connor and slowly succumbs to the warmth of human touch she has been denied. She is especially drawn to Connor’s strong but tender touch.
I liked all the little details of Highland life that are easily woven into this story: the clothing, the harvest, the loyalties and importance of clan leadership, and the politics behind clan alliances. The slow and gentle wooing is near erotic yet sweet and beautiful in the tenderness of their first love encounter. The plot moves at a good pace with a nice blend of romance and action.
There were a few technical errors (an overrobe removed without removal of a cloak which was evident a few paragraphs before) and a few repeated phrases which may even have been intentional but were noticeable to me. These technical items did not detract from my clear enjoyment of the read.
This was another book that I read in two days, even running late to work (its okay since Im the boss) because I was enthralled at a good action part of the story! I am hoping there will be sequels for several of the characters as I would love to read the stories for Vanora, Connor’s twelve year old sister; Deirdre, Brina’s sister, who trusted the wrong man; and Quinton Cameron, Connor’s good friend.
I was having one of those drab days and I didnt really know what to do to lift my mood. Then I spotted a copy of Highland Hellcat . I thought to myself that a man in a kilt and a little romance might be just the remedy I needed.
"Come, my beauty, we shall see if we can impress anyone tonight with our skill."
What a leading first line. Author Mary Wine had my attention. I was envisioning a darkly handsome highlander whispering those words to a bevy of buxom barmaids. Not to be, these were the very words of Brina Chattan, soon to be nun, the third daughter of Robert Chattan, Laird of Chattan Castle. As I continued to read I became intrigued by this young woman who had grown up knowing that she was to become a nun and was destined to become the mother superior. Yes, Brina is a strong willed, and very capable young woman, but whats she doing in a romance. I kept reading and very quickly the plot started to unveil some unseemly events involving one of her elder sisters.
From this point on I couldnt read fast enough. I had an inkling of an impending change in Brinas future, but couldnt guess how it was going to come about. Then I met Connor Lindsey, Laird of Clan Lindsay, and promised Brinas sister Deirdre in marriage. I felt a sympathy for Connor from the moment he was introduced. I was firmly on his side and knew that he would do what ever was required to avenge his honour and that of his clan.
Brina and Connor were both characters with strong personalities that would lead to clashes and adventure, perfect for what I needed from this book. I wasnt disappointed. There were several unexpected twists and turns in the plot that kept this book from being predictable. At those points I couldnt figure out how Ms. Wine was going to get the story back on track, but she would add another twist and bound off in yet another direction. Turned out that this book was the perfect foil to my mood. If youre like me an you enjoy a good romance involving men in kilts, then Highland Hellcat is a wonderful choice.
Mary Wine has done it again! I was thrilled to read the second book in her Highlander series, Highland Hellcat. If youll recall, I did a review on To Conquer a Highlander in July this year and was very pleased with the book.
We first met Connor Lindsey in Ms. Wines first book, TO CONQUER A HIGHLANDER, and from that moment, I was hoping he would have his own story! Ms. Wine, did not disappoint! As I found with the authors previous works, she has an amazing eye for detail. Readers will find themselves completely immersed within the story, and fully able to visualize the characters, their clothes, their surroundings and what they are doing. The historical facts she puts into the book are fascinating!
Our heroine, Brina Chattan, is a bride of Christ. And a feisty one too! Brina is FULL of personality, strength and spunk. I liked her from the beginning. She is passionate, but caring too. I was unaware of how brides of Christ work. I just thought that the young girl would go to the abbey one day. I had no idea how much went into her training, and how even the simple touch of a man on her hand-naughty Connor!-could garner such a reaction since she would be so unused to such things.
When we got to the bath section as well, I went into it thinking I already knew all about it from the first books vivid description of water flowing and heating through the castle, but I was wrong! Ms. Wine, brought in ANOTHER way they heated their water and prepared baths. I was mesmerized by this, as I often am when learning knew historical contraptions and machinations.
Now you may be wondering how Connor Lindsey, Laird of Clan Lindsey, is going to be romantically involved with a bride of Christ... Well, as any good Highlander does, he steals his bride! But the difference between Connor and just any old Highlander, is not just that hes hot, and muscular and wears a kilt (sigh) but that hes got a way with words and a kind heart. Youll have to read to find out!
As I said at the beginning of this post, well done Ms. Wine! I enjoyed the characters, the story, the history, the romance.
I very much look forward to reading the next book in this series, HIGHLAND HEAT.
If you’re looking to be whisk away to a different time and place to enjoy a bit of romance with a twist of intrigue, I have just the book for you
HIGHLAND HELLCAT by Mary Wine takes readers to Scotland where the Highlanders rule. There are warring clans and men dressed in kilts.
Deirdre, the eldest daughter of the Chattan clan, has been promised to laird Connor Lindsey, but she decides to sneak out of the castle to see a man she believes loves her. But, Melor Douglas was only using her to taunt Connor Lindsey who wants a virtuous bride.
Meanwhile the middle daughter, Kaie, has been promised to Roan McLeod and the youngest, Brina, has been promised to God and the church. Brina, having been raised to serve the church, is a bit of a rebel as she can hunt and ride astride a horse. She also a bit of a temper and stubborn streak.
Brina is enroute to the abbey when she’s kidnapped by Connor. The push and pull between these two characters will keep you reading “just one more paragraph.”
This is a historical romance that will leave you breathless. There are intense and steamy scenes between the leading characters. This is the second in a trilogy of sexy Scottish Highland romances, but it is a stand alone book. Connor Lindsey was mention in the first installment, TO CONQUER THE HIGHLANDER, and now author Mary Wine has given him his own story.
The Scottish dialect may be difficult for some to read. However, once you get accustomed to it, it will draw you in and make you forget where you are. It’s like the icing on the cake.
This is book 2 in a series of highlanders, but you can just jump right in here. The hero in this book is mentioned in book 1 since he is a friend of that hero, but the couple from book 1 is not mentioned here. Only the hero that will be in book 3. So, no OCD troubles, you all know I like to talk about that.
Connor Lindsay is planned to marry Deirdre Chattan, but she has been naught and he is upset but still need the alliance but without people doubting if his children are his. So he does what every good highlander would do, kidnaps her virtuous sister that is on her way to a convent. Sparks will fly.
Yay more bride stealing business, this one should be called the bride stealing series. I do like those rugged highlanders stealing brides, but only if they are nice to them. And Connor at once see that Brina is more than just a meek woman raised to be a nun, she can hunt, and she is a hellcat. But at the same time she has learnt nothing about men, and every touch makes her skittish. But who would not melt when a handsome man in a kilt sets out to seduce her, and he is so honourable too, he wants to marry her, but its she who says no. She has promised her father to become a nun. I do like that its he who wants her so much, and she who wants to keep that promise.
A lot of other things are happening too, her father is upset, a daughter of his must become a bride of Christ, one sister is not happy about her upcoming marriage, there is the Deirdre scandal (and she is the heroine of book 3, I wonder if her man will steal her away). A neighbouring clan has Connors sister captive, and he fears they will attack his lands. But mostly it is a about a woman and a man, falling in love, finding passion, and trying to figure out how they can be together.
The negative part is the trouble I have with most Scottish Highlander books, the accent, kind of wish that would be skipped.
Other than that is was a romantic, and sometimes steamy book. It goes without saying, a highlander is a devil in bed. And a hellcat, she takes some time to be tamed.
Brina Chattan has always known her place in life. Her two older sisters were to be married to make advantageous alliances with other clans in the highlands, and she was to become a bride of Christ. Destined for the church from the day she was born, Brinas not prepared for all that to change. When her older sister, Deirdre, disgraces the family, the man Deirdre was promised to takes Brina in her place. Thrown into a life she was never meant to live, Brina doesnt know what to do. She knows she must honor her father and his wishes to see her sent to the church, but her growing desire for the man that kidnapped her is testing her resolve to remain pure for the church and heed her fathers wishes.
Connor Lindsey needs an innocent bride that is above reproach, preferably an amiable one. The one he takes is definitely innocent, but shes more hellcat than she is agreeable. Forced to kidnap Brina when his intended bride is disgraced by Melor Douglas, Connor hopes to get Brina resigned to her fate quickly. The Douglas clan wants the Lindsey clans land, and theyve even kidnapped Connors young sister in hopes of using her to take it away from them. A marriage to Brina would make his clan stronger but he has to get her to agree to it, and get her fathers blessing first...before his clan loses everything.
Is there anything sexier than a highlander who kidnaps his bride? I didnt think so either, and if HIGHLAND HELLCAT is any indication, Mary Wine definitely agrees. Ms. Wine has managed to take an old tried and true story line and breathe fresh air into it; giving it new life with intriguing characters, passionate, tension-filled romance, and a well researched history. Sure you know the story, and theres no question on how its going to end, but the journey to the last page is well worth your time. Theres also an unexpected twist that may surprise you. You will not be disappointed.
HIGHLAND HELLCAT is the second book in Ms. Wines Highland Series. It wonderfully sets up the third book which will feature Brina Chattans sister, Deirdre, and Laird Quinton Cameron. I cant wait to see how Quinton handles her.
While at a conference Myrna Evans, a human sexuality professor, runs into one of her favourite bands, The Sinners. When they invite her to join them for a beer, she is immediately drawn to guitarist, Brian “Master” Sinclair. Brian is drunk and depressed about his latest break up. Myrna, or Professor Sex as the band affectionately calls her, is the last thing he expected with her conservative suit hiding her sexy garters. When Myrna, after losing her original grant funding, gets a last ditch grant to study groupie behaviour, will she find touring with The Sinners and Master Sinclair too much for her heart?
Backstage Pass was a well developed story with complex characters. There was a secondary plot line that was subtle and superbly done that runs throughout the book that had me on the edge of my seat near the end. Heavy metal guitarist Brian Sinclair is a hopeless romantic. He makes you want to snuggle him up and then lick him all over. With his tattoos and irresistably sexy sweetness he manages to charm the panties off Myrna and the reader. Myrna is both vulnerable and incredibly strong. Brian’s band mates Trey, Eric, Sed, and Jace all get introduced in this instalment of the Sinners on Tour series with indications they will all get their own book. Olivia Cunning weaves together the lives of the five very different band mates in a way that leaves you feeling as if you are a part of the messy, sometimes complicated friendships that they have cultivated as a result of working and touring together in close quarters. Cunning doesn’t shy away from turning up the heat – some of the scenes were off the charts HOT. Cunning took her time developing the intimacy between Brian and Myrna which turned all the smokin’ hot sex into something more. There were a couple of times I wasn’t sure which characters head I was in, Myrna or Brian, but it was a minor issue for me. This is one of the best erotic romances I have read this year, before I was finished Backstage Pass I was looking to see when the next installment was due out and which bandmates story it would be. Can’t wait!
n Mary Wine’s latest romance “Highland Hellcat”, the youngest daughter of the Laird of the Chattan, Brina, is destined to become a highland nun because that is what the youngest daughter of rich Laird families do. She has been raised for a life in the church – she was never trained to be a wife. Brina has been a free spirit her whole life who knew that when her time came to go to the church, she would give herself over to God. Life was all that Brina could wish it to be until her sister, Deirdre, falls in love with Melor Douglas.
Deirdre was betrothed to Connor Lindsay, yet she was sleeping with another man which is the ultimate insult in ancient Scotland. Upon arriving to claim his bride and hearing the news of Deidre’s betrayal, Connor sees Brina and he’s fascinated by her flawless beauty and her intriguing air of independence. Since the Laird of the Chattan cannot provide the promised Deirdre, Connor claims Brina for his own and steals her away to be his wife. And now the fun begins…
Mary Wine gives you a story that features the strength of a free spirited young woman who does battle with the focused determination of a Scottish Laird who has his own dark agenda. It’s fun to read about these two as they try to outwit each other, the character of Brina is appealing as you connect with an innocent girl who is thrust into a situation over which she has no control. Watching Connor fall in love with this courageous and beautiful ingenue keeps you turning page after page. Any lover of historical romances who gravitates toward the stories with strong female leads needs to pick up “Highland Hellcat”, you will not be sorry.
I was really excited when I got the request to review this book because I really enjoyed Mary Wines book, To Conquer a Highlander. Though my heritage comes from the Scottish lowlands instead of the Highlands Im always very interested in how the Scots are portrayed in literature. Mary Wine has a knack for understanding the Highland woman. She was fierce and determined and just as formidable as her warrior husband in most cases. I like the way that Wine is able to show Scottish women as strong, yet vulnerable when it comes to love.
Connor Lindsey is a strong man and loyal to his clan. He has watched the turmoil surrounding the lairdship since he was a boy and now that he is the laird he has some difficult decisions to make. He must secure the loyalty of the clan to him and one of the ways he can do comes from finding a good wife to help him. When Connor kidnaps Brina Chattan he bites off a bit more than he can chew. She is fiery and full of wit and she isnt afraid of him. She stand ups to him tangles with him and eventually wins his heart.
The chemistry between Brina and Connor jumps off the page. The heat and passion in their love for each other will satisfy any romance fan as well as the historical fiction fan. This is a book that you wont soon forget. The plot is engaging and full of surprises. Its a fast paced romance that will keep you turning the pages long into the night.
I liked this one a lot. I would recommend it to anyone who has a penchant for the Scots and for those who just crave a good hot romance.
Im giving this one 4 out of 5 apples from my book bag!
Review: This is the second book Ive read of Mary Wines and I happily confess I know consider myself a fan. She is an outstanding voice in the world of historical romance. Of course, my favourite romance novels are those set in the Highlands so this one was perfect.
Youd think it would be impossible to come up with an original storyline within the huge world of historical romance and yet this book does, at least not a storyline Ive read before. Brina is the third daughter of Laird Chattan and has been promised to the church. One of the things that I loved about this book was the authenticity of the details in the book. Such as, the fact that Brina had only ever worn plain wool dresses that hid her figure and as shed been raised for the church and dressed accordingly she had been treated differently. In fact, she didnt know any cuss words because no one had ever used one around her. Its these little details that make it so easy to get lost in the story.
Of course Connor is as hot as any highland hunk that Ive read about before. He was fighting to hang on to what belonged to him, hence the reason he ended up kidnapping Brina. As with all romance novels it follows a formula but this book is pure escapism and as the author pays such attention to detail it makes it an easy and enjoyable read.
Brina Chattan destiny is the nearby abbey. Her father, the Laird, promised her there as a babe. Growing up Brina wore undyed clothing to set her apart and she learned humility early on. She also learned many skills most girls did not like riding astride and hunting with a bow. As she would not have a man to rely on, she needed these skills to provide for the abbey, once she became the mother superior.
Brina’s older sisters, Deirdre and Kaie are betrothed to neighboring clans, alliances that would make each clan stronger. Kaie though wants to join the church while Deirdre is positive she is in love with Melor Douglas. Deirdre is found with Melor and her virtue is long gone. Shamed, she is returned home but what of her betrothed, Connor Lindsey?
Connor is the Laird of his clan. Though his parents were eventually married, they weren’t when he was born which caused many of the clan to call him bastard. Still, he became Laird and now is looking for alliances to make his clan stronger. He wants one with Chattan but doesn’t want a spoiled daughter. To this end, he takes Brina, defying convention. Can he convince her to marry him or will he have to force her?
Brina is bound to the church and has never planned on marrying. Yet, she finds herself learning to like Connor’s touch. Torn between two loyalties, which should she hold on to?
This is a wonderful historical novel with dashing heroes and strong women. Clan intrigue comes into play as power struggles emerge. Fantastic use of an interesting time in Scotland’s history.
Scotland had a period of time when a child held the throne. A strong clan could influence the future of Scotland and the Douglas clan decided they should do it. Other highland clans needed to balance that power or be taken over. Marriage united clans and daughters were excellent pawns. Only through balance could Scotland remain at peace and not have England take them over.
The clans need to be strong and so are these characters. All of the men have convictions and determined attitudes. It could make them extremely arrogant but instead gives them a confident feel. Connor has responsibilities to his clan and sister yet he quickly learns that the hellcat he stole from the church keeps his interest just as much. He keeps his honor as he woos his lady. Brina has been brought up to honor her vows and be independent. She knows she is promised to the church and only has to convince Connor of this fact. But as time goes on, does she even want to try?
But among the intrigue of clan power, there is a wonderful love story. Brina doesn’t just fall into Connor’s plans and Connor learns that Brina is well able to stand up to him. Yet, trust is built and a marriage or two might happen. Between discussions are kisses and seduction and sometimes when you don’t expect it, a bit of humor.
This book sets up more books to come which is great as I fell in love with these characters, this era and these families. Brina has one more sister to come into play and the highlands have a couple of sexy Lairds looking for brides. I can’t wait to read more!
Brina Chattan, promised bride of Christ, was raised in the Highlands to be a humble woman, suitable to her coming station in life. Although she is devout and devoted to her duty, she has a spirit that is proud and strong and can notch a bow to hunt a rabbit as well as her father’s retainers. Prepared for this life, awaiting the day she will enter the Church, she is caught unaware when she is dragged into the countryside on the back of the giant warriors horse.
Conner, Laird of the clan of Lindsey, was promised to one Chattan sister. When her reputation is put to question and the other promised to another man, he is unsure what to do. That is until his eyes light on the woman in the undyed robes that mark her as promised to the Church. Her spirit shows through her eyes that meet his without fear, and her chin rises in challenge while he and her father speak. He decides right then that she will be his and no other will do.
Two strong people, driven by circumstance to each other’s lives and driven by passion to each other’s arms, may yet unite the clans and save Conner’s sister... that is if he manages to tame the Highland Hellcat.
Brina and Conner are both raised to live entirely different lives than the ones they end up living, having come from poverty or lower stations in life to positions of power through twists of fate beyond their control. What makes this unique is that they understand the lives of those around them and are better able to make decisions about what would really be best for the running of their lands and people. Also it makes them suited to each other as they are both very strong, very brave characters who do not lack daring or passion and watching the two of them shoot sparks at each other will have the reader flipping the pages. Absolute favorite part: the shoes. Penance was never so amusing as it is when brought to life by Wine’s descriptive pen.
In a word: DELIGHTFUL!
I really enjoyed this Scottish historical romance. Brina and Connor were likable characters and their romance was sweet, sexy and full of sexual tension as the sexual chemistry heated up between them.
Brina was raised knowing she was destined to become a nun. She was not prepared to be a wife. But when her sister destroys the marriage match created for her to Connor, Connor seeks to make Brina his wife instead. He kidnaps her and whisks her away to his Highland castle where they learn to know each other and fall in love.
But love and lust are not enough for Brina to give up what she believes is her rightful place as a nun in the Church. Her word is her honor. Her father trusts her to do right. She wants to honor her father by doing his will- her becoming a nun. Yet shes torn because Connor has her, and wants her for his wife - she cant deny she wants him also. These two have great chemistry together and their love scenes...smokin!
She has to make a choice between the father she loves and the man she loves. In the end, the question is can they all have what they want?
If youve never read Mary Wines books and love Scottish Highland romances this is a MUST READ. You wont be disappointed.
*This is book #2 in her Highlander series, but it reads PERFECTLY as a stand alone romance.
4.5 stars out of 5
Highlander heroes have long held the ability to cause women to swoon at their feet. Mary Wine brings that same power to life in her novel Highland Hellcat. Readers will long for a part in this vividly enchanting story and dream of the characters as if they were real. With sentences that flow perfectly one to another, and no bad writing to speak of, even the harshest of literary romance critics should be pleased with this tale.
Fiction Historical Romance: Highland Hellcat by Mary Wine
It is only now, when the book is closed and the story read, that I realized the author doesn’t give a whole lot of details to her characters. A brief mention of their physical looks gives readers all they need to know. The storyline itself is so gripping, the scenes so full of a raw literary power that readers will suffer a complete immersion amongst the novel’s pages. It is the mark of a talented author, when the story takes precedence over all else and readers aren’t drummed into the ground with unnecessary details.
One of the hardest things for historical fiction writers is to bring history into the present. Land depictions, clothing details, and certainly the languages and slang of the era in question, are of the utmost importance to making a book great. Mary Wine pulls all of this off smashingly. Not only will readers ride on horseback from the inland of the Highlands to an ocean front castle, but they will do it wearing appropriate clan plaids and speaking in specifically accurate dialogue.
The dialogue between the characters, which is not too much or too little, explains words, events and culture to readers in a way many authors long to do. The goal is to show the reader something in the book, without telling the reader what is happening. Events, scenes etc. must be experienced and not told, which is what occurs in Highland Hellcat.
The Action Packed Story of Highland Hellcat by Mary Wine
The clan McLeod, Chattan, Lindsey, Douglas etc. are greatly immersed in the culture of their time. Readers will see the honor, pride and brute strength of the Highland warriors who loved as passionately as the lived. They live and die by the honor of a Highlander, so it is only natural that Connor Lindsey do whatever it takes to find a virtuous wife fit to be mistress of his keep. Even if that means kidnapping a woman pledged to the church to live her life as a nun; granted a hellcat of a nun, but a nun all the same.
Women are kidnapped by warring clans, virtue is stolen (and freely given) and the story is constantly wrought with suspense. Readers will be eager to find out who of their favorite characters intends to stick to their word, and who doesn’t.
Romance in the Highlands in Highland Hellcat by Mary Wine
The sexual tension between Connor Lindsey and Brina Chattan is simply put: fun to watch. Because readers will watch them that’s for sure. You will se them go from bitterness, stubborn rebellion, justified aggression, ill-placed blame, to a love that can not be stopped, a passion that can not be controlled and a fate that can not be escaped. It is a wonderful love story that is highly entertaining from the very first pages. The dialogue between the hard-earned Laird and the almost-nun plucked from her place in life is amusing to say the least.
How far can someone be pushed before they turn their back on honor and truth and turn to lie-breaking pride? It is a question that gets an answer amidst the pages of this endearing novel. Not just by Connor and Brina, but by all the characters. Each sub-character is put in predicaments of love (whether between friends, servants, lovers or family) and loyalty that reveal the truth of the Highlander era.
About the Author of Highland Hellcat; Mary Wine
Mary Wine has produced many a novel, in the romantic suspense genre as well as erotic fantasy and of course, her historicals. Being a history-buff, historical costume designer and maker and a participant in historical reenactments, it is no wonder that Mary Wine weaved her passion for romance novels with history. Look out for Mary Wine’s next release; Highland Heat and her interview with Suite 101 on October 1st 2010.
Highland laird, Connor Lindsey is looking for a wife who is innocent and one that will comply to all he says. But when he kidnaps Brina Chattan she isnt exactly what he was expecting. A wild side that refuses to obey or be tamed.
Highland Hellcat is entertaining. A fascinating read. You can really tell how much research was put into this book. Full of romance and intrigue. Exactly what I hoped for when I seen the title and cover. This was my first time reading anything by Mary Wine, and for me this was an enjoyable read. I really liked Brina. She was such a free spirit and she was exactly what Connor need it. If you love Highlanders... youll love this one.
Each time I settle in to read a Mary Wine story, I know that I’m due to take a journey that is absolutely fantastic. Her characters are unforgettable, her detail to description is unmatched, and her stories remain with you long after the last page has been turned. Her newest story, Highland Hellcat, is no exception.
The moment I met the fiery yet devoted heroine, Brina, I was enraptured. She’s sassy, she’s smart, and she’s so loyal it’s almost a fault. It’s not until she meets the equally memorable hero, Connor, that she learns her loyalties are not as deep-seated as she once believed. They spar, they wrangle, and as the story progresses, they learn to appreciate one another for the traits that make them so compatible even as fate seems determined to keep them apart. It’s a captivating dynamic, one Ms. Wine is known for, and I enjoyed every single moment of it. Adding to this is the supporting cast, who are also equally well developed, as well as the plot which provides twist and turns near the conclusion that you won’t see coming.
The writing, as always, is fantastic, and the dialogue will make you wither and melt. I adored the chemistry between Brina and Connor and couldn’t wait for their passion and desire to consume them. The conflict and tension add depth to the work, but ultimately it’s their differences and similarities that make the story a must read. While a reader is always aware of the direction a story must take, Highland Hellcat does offer some surprises and intrigue.
I recommend Highland Hellcat to any and all historical fans, especially those with a love for a handsome, uncompromising Scot and a strong, unapologetic heroine. When you’re craving a historical romance with heat, passion, and characters you won’t soon forget, Mary Wine is an author you can trust to deliver.
HIGHLAND HELLCAT (ISBN 9781402237386)
by Mary Wine
Genre: Scotland, Historical Romance
Setting: Late 1430s Scotland
RT Rating: 4/5 Stars
Wine’s stories are rich with historical detail and her characters are fully developed. Highland Hellcat uses the popular captive/captor theme to the fullest as Wine’s tale is one that pulls readers in.
Laird Connor Lindsey is looking to set up alliances and has arranged a marriage with Robert Chattan’s daughter Diedre. When he discovers that Diedre isn’t pure, he steals her sister, Brina, though she is promised to the church. Brina fights with all she is worth to convince Connor to let her go to the abbey and he uses seduction like a weapon. When Brina is taken from him and sent to court, he follows. Her father is also on his way. Hopefully between them all, peace will reign. (SOURCEBOOKS, Oct., 352 pp., $6.99)
Wine (To Conquer a Highlander) deftly constructs another well-rounded Scottish historical. The older Chattan sisters are destined for arranged marriages, but high-spirited Brina was raised to be a bride of Christ. Then handsome laird Connor Lindsey kidnaps Brina to be his wife after her sister Deirdre is disgraced. Even as the aptly described “hellcat” begins to fall for her captor, she refuses to betray either her father’s wishes or her own high standards: “If I fail to honor his word, how could ye ever accept any promise I made to you?” Gentle Connor, scarred by his difficult childhood, slowly introduces Brina to passion and love in a series of ardent encounters. Wine’s fans will anticipate the final dramatic turn of events as much as the happy ending, where all loose ends are tied up and no hearts are left broken. (Oct.)
Mary Wine sets her historical romance HIGHLAND HELLCAT in the 1500s Scottish Highlands, where Brina Chattan is the third daughter of the laird, and thus, the one he has chosen to give to the church. Hes allowed her the run of the woods and fields, learning to provide for his castle in order to then provide for the convent. The laird has arranged politically allied marriages for his other two daughters in order to keep a balance of power in the region. Unfortunately, his eldest daughter is seduced into an affair by a man in the second daughters alliance, and the second daughter would rather go to the convent than be married to any man. This leaves Connor Lindsey to claim Brina for his wife and after being raised not to be submissive to any man, she is truly a Highland Hellcat and a true test for Connors sanity.
Wine brilliantly sets up a "Taming of the Shrew" style adversary between Connor and Brina. He really admires all of her spunk as well as her abilities at the hearth and in providing food from the fields and woods.
Brina, on the other hand, is astonished by the smell of the sea and by the labor-saving devices Connor has built into their castle, including a process for heating water in a wall surrounding the fireplaces as well as a way to send the bath water back out of the castle. Unfortunately, just as Brina comes to truly love Connor, shes kidnapped by another laird who wants to further manipulate the political landscape. Thankfully, Brina and her tomboy ways rule the day. She manages to extricate herself as well as Connors sister, who was abducted years earlier as a political pawn. I just love reading about strong, flexible women.
HIGHLAND HELLCAT is a vibrant tale of romance and resourcefulness, love and loyalty, and hard work and humor. I cant wait to read more of her work.
