Praise for To Conquer a Highlander:
“Not to be missed.”
—Lora Leigh, New York Times bestselling author of Lion’s Heat
Ruined, Betrayed, and banished…
As brave as she is impulsive, Deirdre Chattan’s tendency to follow her heart and not her head has finally tarnished her reputation beyond repair. But when powerful Highland Laird Quinton Cameron finds her, he doesn’t care about her past—it’s her future he’s about to change…
But it’s never too late for redemption…
From the moment Quinton sets eyes on Deirdre Chattan, rational thought vanishes. For in her eyes he sees a fiery spirit that matches his own, and he’ll be damned if he’ll let such a wild Scottish rose wither under the weight of a nun’s habit…
With nothing to lose, Deirdre and Quinton band together to protect king and country. But what they can accomplish alone is nothing compared to what they can build with their passion for each other…
What readers say about Mary Wine’s Scottish romance:
“Simply extraordinary.”
“Scottish Highlands, rugged and virile warriors—there is nothing like it.”
“Plenty of romance, action, intrigue, and danger.”
1439
Spring was blowing on the breeze.
Deirdre lifted her face and inhaled. Closing her eyes and smiling, she caught a hint of heather in the air.
But that caused a memory to stir from the dark corner of her mind where she had banished it. It rose up, reminding her of a spring two years ago when a man had courted her with pieces of heather and soft words of flattery.
False words.
“Ye have been angry for too long, Deirdre.”
Deirdre turned her head slightly and discovered her sister Kaie standing nearby.
“And ye walk too silently; being humble doesn’t mean ye need try and act as though ye are nae even here in this life.”
Kaie smiled but corrected herself quickly, smoothing her expression until it was once again simply plain. “That is my point exactly, Deirdre. Ye take offense at everything around ye. I am content. That should nae be a reason for ye to snap at me.”
Her sister wore the undyed robe of a nun. Her hair was covered now, but Deirdre had watched as it was cut short when Kaie took her novice vows. Her own hair was still long. She had it braided and the tail caught up so that it didn’t swing behind her. The convent wouldn’t hear any vows from her, not for several more years to come.
“But ye are nae happy living among us, Deirdre, and that is a sad thing, for those living in God’s house should be here because they want to be.”
“Well, I like it better than living with our father, and since he sent my dowry to the church, it is only fitting that I sleep beneath this roof.”
Kaie drew in a stiff breath. “Ye are being too harsh. Father did his duty in arranging a match for us all. It is only fair that he would be cross to discover that ye had taken a lover.”
Melor Douglas. The man she’d defied everything to hold, because she believed his words of love.
Deirdre sighed. “True, but ye are very pleased to be here and not with Roan McLeod as his wife. Father arranged that match for ye as well, and yet you defied his choice by asking Roan McLeod to release ye. There are more than a few who would call that disrespectful to our sire.”
Her sister paled, and Deirdre instantly felt guilty for ruining her happiness.
“I’m sorry, Kaie. That was unkind of me to say.” Her sister drew in a deep breath. “Ye most likely think me timid, but I was drawn to this convent. Every night when I closed my eyes, I dreamed of it, unlike ye…”
Kaie’s eyes had begun to glow with passion as she spoke of her devotion, but she snapped her mouth shut when she realized what she was saying. Deirdre scoffed at her attempt to soften the truth.
“Unlike me and my choice to take Melor Douglas as my lover.”
It was harsh but true, and Deirdre preferred to hear it, however blunt it might be.
“He lied to ye. Ye went to him believing ye’d be his wife.”
“Ye do nae need to make excuses for me, Kaie. I made my choice, and I will nae increase my sins by adding dishonesty to them. Everyone knows, anyway.
It seems all I ever hear about here, how I am unworthy of the veil ye wear so contently.” Deirdre shrugged.
“At least no one shall be able to claim I am intent on hiding my actions behind unspoken words and unanswered questions.”
Her sister laughed. A soft, sad little sound that sent heat into Deirdre’s cheeks, because Kaie was sweet and she didn’t need to be discussing such a scarlet subject.
“Ye have ever been bold, Deirdre. I believe ye should have been born a son for all the courage ye have burning inside ye. For ye are correct, I am content, and there is no place I would rather be but here. Living a simple life. Roan McLeod was a kind soul to allow me to become a bride of Christ instead of his wife. Wedding me would have given him a strong alliance with our clan.”
Kaie bent and picked up a leather bucket that was sitting near the doorway. “I do nae know why the man gave up something that is so important in the Highlands, but I am grateful for it every day.”
Her sister left, which granted Deirdre the freedom to frown. Allowing Melor Douglas to seduce her had been called many things, none of them good. It was slightly shocking to hear her sister label it “spirit.” Aye, the sort that knights must feel as they surged forward in one glorious charge and then came home missing limbs or an eye, or not returning at all. Such made for good talk around the fire at night, but the reality of living with those injuries during the day was anything but grand.
She sighed and took the tapestry she had been holding out to the simple wooden stand in the yard. She tossed it over the single bar of wood and reached for a thin branch that had been folded to make a rug beater. Clouds of dust began to tickle her nose as she swung the branch quickly back and forth. It had been a relief to discover the convent wouldn’t hear her vows.
Deirdre beat the tapestry harder as she struggled with her guilt. She wasn’t ashamed of the fact that she wasn’t pure anymore, but that only intensified her misgivings, because it left her wondering just what she did believe in. Kaie was correct in saying she had been angry too long.
Deidre was barely a young woman when she lost her heart to a deceiving man. He proclaimed love and promised marriage but was really using her to strike out at her betrothed. Disgraced and broken hearted she goes to the convent. She tries to be content and work through her shame but it is hard to dampen a true nature of passion.
Quinton, Laird Cameron, once met Deidre and was impressed by her fiery spirit. When he meets her at the convent he immediately taunts her with suggestive teasing. She faces off with him but is unable to stop him from searching the abbey for the Queen.
Shortly after the search the Queen does seek refuge in the convent. When she meets Deidre she decides that they look enough alike to have her play decoy. The Queen offers Deidre a position as one of her Ladies in Waiting in exchange for help. Deidre sees this as a way to have a better life and a way to make her father proud of her. She helps the Queen slip off but Deidre is soon captured by Cameron’s men. They take her to Quinton thinking they have successfully delivered the Queen to him. Quinton immediately recognizes her and is pleased with his men even if they got the wrong woman.
Deidre wants to leave the Cameron clan and go to her position with the Queen but Quinton has a different idea and has no intention of allowing her out of the keep. Thus the conflict continues in their personal battle. Quinton may be able to prevail in getting Deidre to succumb to the chemistry between them but can he capture her spirit and get her to stay? Deidre has to struggle with the internal battle of desire against the need to not dishonor her father by her actions.
The dialogue is suggestive and sexy; the conflict keen and fun. There are escapes and danger and of course a passion that flares bright and hot. This has it’s own share of wisdom and I liked when Laird Douglas says to Deidre:
“We were all young and innocent once, lass.”...”Now ye understand what the world is really like. Some crumble when they kicked in the jaw, but others pick themselves up and become stronger. They take the sting and pain and use them to fortify themselves.” Page 255.
That is just the sort of person Deidre is.
The characters are very likable and this is a fast, easy read. I enjoyed this romance but give caution that there is some brash, raw language
HIGHLAND HEAT by Mary Wine is a exciting historical romance set in 1439 the Highlands of Scotland. It is the third in “THE HIGHLANDER” series, but can be read as a stand alone.Book One,”Conquer a Highlander”,Book Two, “Highland Hellcat”.It is well written with depth and details. It has love, romance, sweet sensuality, passion, sweetsurrender, kidnapping, fate, trust,Scottish warriors, Highlanders, helping the Queen of Scotland, witty banter, and finding your soul mate. This story takes us from a convent to a castle in the Highlands of Scotland.Deidre, having been banished, betrayed and ruined was sent to a convent, but she is high spirited, outspoken, and strong willed. When the powerful Laird Quinton, comes to the Convent in search of the Queen of Scotland,he clashes with Deidre and is attracted to her. This story entails Deidre being taken by three, yes three different men at three different times and for three different reasons. Deidre and Quinton’s attraction builds to a fiery passion,Deidre resists the attraction and their sensual tension for a while, but she will eventually succumbs to his advances. Together they find their true soul mate. This is a fast paced, action packed, full of adventure story that will keep you turning the pages from the first page to the last. Written in true Mary Wine fashion this is a must read story. This book was received for the purpose of review and details can be found at Sourcebooks Casablanca,an imprint of Sourcebooks.
Reading has taken a backseat to other randomness going on in my life at the moment. But I was glad to pick this one up. I love Highlander romances and, even more, I love Mary Wine’s books.
I vociferated between intense like and lukewarm annoyance with Deirdre. She was stubborn, brash, and vulnerable. But I did have those moments where the annoyance levels rose and I wanted to strangle her. I did empathize with her. She was clearly emotionally scarred by her previous lover and did not trust men as a result. Quinton was just as stubborn and headstrong as Deirdre…They were perfect for each other. Watching them clash was quite interesting. I did like that Quinton knew he loved Deirdre from the moment he saw herhe just needed to convince Deirdre herself. It was quite the new dynamic because I am used to do the convincing.
I have read many of Mary Wine’s Highlander romances and I have loved them all. ButI think this one may be my favorite. The chemistry between Deirdre and Quinton pops off the page. Wine brings the story to life with rich historical detail and a great plot. If you are looking for a really good Highlander romance, Mary Wine is always a good bet. It is my humble opinion that her Highlander novels are the best ones out there. She melds the history and the romance so well and always manages to create an intriguing plot.
FROM THE BOOK FAERY REVIEWS…Highland Heat indeed! After reading Highland Hellcat I could not wait to read what might (and did) happen between Deidre and Quinton. We ask out loud if they can both learn to trust the opposite sex again when it comes to love but we all know that of course they will. The connection to one another was just blazing hot in both tongue and body. You will be fanning yourself from all that “savage” heat! Mary Wines did not disappoint me with the 3rd book in her Highlander Series and I look forward to her next one.
This month saw the release of Mary Wines third historical romance novel, in her Highlander series, Highland Heat. I previously had the pleasure of reading To Conquer a Highlander and Highland Hellcat the first two books in the series. Ms. Wine has penned, yet again, another fascinating tale, one in which shes included some famous historical characters (namely, Joan Beaufort), which I found made the book even more interesting to me. She infuses historical detail and fact in with her storyall while keeping the plot character and romance driven. I am completely drawn into Ms. Wines writing, because her heroines are strong, feisty, and Deidre is more experienced than most, which makes her character come alive, her issues a whole new ball game. Quinton Cameron, is a sexy alpha male. He is in it for the challengewhich Deidre is more than willing to give. I like a hero who doesnt give in easily, who seeks something beyond the ordinary.
I truly found this tale to be an exciting adventurein love (and making lovesizzling hot scenes!), self-discovery and political intrigue.
I recommend reading Ms. Wines work, and I look forward eagerly to reading her future releases.
Finally Quinton and Deirdre’s book. I’ve wanted their story since that first spark - and snarl - in Highland Hellcat. Deirdre is shamed and banished, Quinton is laird and arrogant, both so different from Connor and Brina in their book. Still full of spirit, bravado, and adventure, Deirdre is determined to make things right with her father, while Quinton is equally determined to have her, even though he’s not quite sure why. He’s about to find out.
Having come to terms with her penance - long, backbreaking hours of hard work with the church - all for falling for the wrong man, giving him all of herself when he utters just a few charming words and a promise to wed, Deirdre strides through opportunity’s wide-open door when Queen Joan Beaufort arrives at the convent looking for sanctuary. The queen garners sympathy from Deirdre, who knows what it’s like to be controlled by and feel pain at the hands of men. Agreeing to be a decoy, she rides off with English retainers and eventually runs into those seeking Her Majesty, letting them believe they’ve found their woman, despite the fact it’s Quinton’s men and they’re taking her to Drumdeer and the man himself.
And this is where the fun begins. Deirdre is not afraid of Quinton and his title one iota. She’s strong Highland stock, just like him, and has nothing to lose by standing up to the laird. Of course, one touch and she’s a goner, giving in to his kisses and taking all the pleasure he has to give. But Deirdre can’t lose focus of her plan to make her father proud of her once more. She gives Quinton’s men the slip one day, only to be captured by a neighboring laird, who also wants peace to continue in the Highlands, so he will return her to Quinton. Instead she finds herself taken by a relative of the bastard who deceived her before. She’d been better off just staying with Quinton than at the mercy of such a man.
It’s during this time Deirdre realizes she loves Quinton, and when she’s back with him after her ordeal, she declares that love to him, but he maintains his heart is dead and all he can give her is a home, duty and respect from his people, some happiness, and, of course, a lot of mind-blowing sex during their nights. Refusing to accept this, Deirdre tosses out her own ultimatum. It’s not until a woman from Quinton’s past barges into their lives that Quinton knows he’s been fooling himself for much too long, but will he be too late to save Deirdre and their love?
While I still like Highland Hellcat the best of the series so far - a tortured hero will always claim my heart - I do like the relationship between this couple. Ms. Wine mixes it up and keeps everything interesting throughout, never losing sight of her characters and their personalities, flaws, and duties. We also get more about Deirdre’s half sister, her father’s illegitimate daughter, and the man who’d take her on, despite the stigma of her birth. Another intriguing story in the hands of Ms. Wine, I’m sure, when the time comes.
Grade: B+
Acting first and thinking later has gotten Deirdre Chattan into trouble. This time she’s disgraced herself and her clan.
When her father gives her dowry to the church, there’s nothing left for Deirdre except to go to the convent where her sister, Kaie, is studying to be Mother Superior. Deirdre won’t become a nun, but at least she has a place to stay.
Highlander Quinton Cameron arrives at the convent searching for Joan Beaufort, queen of Scotland. It appears there are those who would hold the queen hostage in order to control the boy King, her son.
Deirdre and Quinton share a brief past or rather one passionate kiss. Sparkles once again fly between the two. Quinton, it seems, doesn’t disapprove of Deirdre but finds her independent streak intriguing.
Later the queen does arrive at the convent and ask Deirdre for help. The queen is trying to make her way to the man she loves. Since Deirdre looks a lot like the queen, she agrees to lead those who would harm her on a merry chase. Thus the adventure begins.
The chemistry between Deirdre and Quinton is electrifying. Author Mary Wine puts a great deal of feeling into her characters. In addition, her detailed description of the land and the era will have you believing you’re there. While the Scottish dialect is a little difficult at first, it adds authenticity to the story.
HIGHLAND HEAT will grab your attendance from the first paragraph and hold you captive until the very end.
Mary Wine continues her Scottish highlander romances with the highly adventurous and extremely passionate Highland Heat.
Mary Wine is an accomplished author whose erotica and romance fiction novels have become unforgettable fan favorites, especially her Scottish highlander romances, like Highland Heat. This latest book of hers takes the passion to a new level, with two people coming together to save the crown and their love hanging in the balance.
Historical Romance Novel; Highland Heat
The setting is Scotland in the fifteenth century when Lairds ruled their lands and women were captured and married to extinguish feuds and unite clans. The imagery Mary Wine gives her readers is unique and fully capable of whisking us to the very places she describes. Whether its Restalrig or Drumdeer castle, each location is aptly detailed with enough description for readers to picture in their minds eye the very places the characters inhabit.
As horses take their riders from nunnery’s to stone keeps, readers experience the thrill of riding across the highlands, the fear of being always in danger from other clans, and the passion of a unique partner in love. The book is a wonderful example of true escapist literature that helps you mentally escape from your natural life. The prose flows perfectly and the plot is expertly written to keep readers guessing at the outcome of certain events. The novel itself fits in well with the authors previous works, especially the Highlander Series, flowing nicely from its predecessors and briefly mentioning the series previous main characters.
Highlander Romance in Scotland
Something common with Mary Wines books is the strong leading women who are labeled hellions by their insufferably highlander men. The pride, the honor, the arrogance, and the brute strength of the highlanders brings out the best and the worst in their partners. The women are every bit as strong and honorable as the men and wont stand for any of their stubbornness.
In Highland Heat, the main characters deal with problems that issue forth from the two of them having such equally strong personalities. Both are stubborn and mule-headed, but they love all the more strongly for it. Quinton Cameron is not a man to be crossed and he takes what he wants, even if it means kidnapping a woman promised to the Church.
Deirdre Chattan isnt made for the Church and takes her first opportunity for a different life, not counting on the one man who excites her to actually capture her. Deirdre is often placed into impossible situations where readers will simply feel frustration and anger on her behalf. Everything seems to go wrong for her, everything. And a lot of it stems from her own bad choices, all made of course with the best of intentions. The two square off at one another, both as equally resistant to surrender to one anothers whims, both equally sure they are in the right.
That kind of chemistry between the lead roles makes for some very interesting scenes to be sure. The novel is one you will certainly emotionally invest yourself in, mainly because you cant help but feel for the characters. Mary Wine is just that good an author. The dialogue is adequately written to each character, and will have you cringing in disbelief at some of the ludicrous things the characters say in anger, pride, or passion.
HIGHLAND HEAT by Mary Wine is an exciting historical romance set in 1439 the Highlands of Scotland. It is the third in THE HIGHLANDER” series, but can be read as a standalone. Book One “To Conquer a Highlander”, Book Two, “Highland Hellcat”. It is well written with depth and details. It has love, romance, sweet sensuality, passion, sweet surrender, kidnapping, fate, trust, Scottish warriors, Highlanders, helping the Queen of Scotland, witty banter, and finding your soul mate. This story takes us from a convent to a castle in the Highlands of Scotland. Deidre, having been banished, betrayed and ruined was sent to a convent, but she is high spirited, outspoken, and strong willed. When the powerful Laird, Quinton, comes to the Convent in search of the Queen of Scotland, he clashes with Deidre and is attracted to her. This story entails Deidre being taken by three, yes three, different men at three different times and for three different reasons. Deidre and Quinton’s attraction builds to a fiery passion, Deidre resists the attraction and their sensual tension for a while, but she will eventually succumb to his advances. Together they find their true soul mate. This is a fast paced, action packed, full of adventure story that will keep you turning the pages from the first page to the last. Written in true Mary Wine fashion, this is a must read story.
Deidre Chattan, daughter of a Scottish clan, is strong willed by nature in a world ruled by men. All she wants to do is follow her heart. By following that heart she ends up losing something precious that is designated the greatest sin. To atone for this sin, Deidre enters a nunnery and does all the tasks given to her, so this can be washed off her soul. She has been refused by the nuns to take her vows. Deidre has too much fire in her spirit to tame.
Quinton Cameron, a powerful highland lord, finds Deidre at the nunnery. He understands her spirit because it matches his own. A fierce strong man, Quinton is immediately drawn to her. He does not give two figs about her past. All he cares about is the electricity that is building between them.
They share a passion that is beyond anything they have ever known. Together they try and help protect the crown of Scotland. Alone together, the heat melts their hearts. Can these two find love? Can they overcome past hurts and regrets? Or is bed the only place they can be happy?
Well, let me tell you, what a hot book. Almost had to turn the furnace down in order to read it. But seriously, very well written. I enjoyed it immensely. I fell in love with Deidre and Quinton and the passion they have together. If you are easily offended by sexual content, this book is not for you. But if you like to turn up the heat, no matches are required because this volume will definitely light the flame.
Once more author Mary Wine delivers a fun, sexy romantic Scottish Highland romance. This is the story of Deidre Chattan and Highland Laird Quinton Cameron. Deidre is a fallen woman. In a previous novel we meet Deidre. She was young, passionate and in love with the wrong man. After mistakenly giving her heart and body to a worthless scoundrel, Deidre has shamed her family.
In Highland Heat, we find Deidre living at a convent with her sister. Because of her ruined reputation and lack of a dowry Deidre has no hope of securing a good marriage. This Deidre is a bit older and wiser...shes harder and less trusting than she was in the previous novels. But she isnt less passionate. She has a strong passionate nature and Quinton Cameron likes it very much.
These two cant help the chemistry between them, and neither Deidres past nor Quintons is going to keep them apart. While intrigue, evil plotting and circumstances all get in the way Deidre and Quinton continue to find their way back to each other.
While this book can be read as a stand alone, I personally would recommend reading the entire series in order simply because you see the growth of the characters and get a fuller better picture of where they were and how they got to where they are now in the story. Besides its a great historical romance series set in the Scottish Highlands- whats not to love about that?!
**Cover Love: I do love the kilt, but even more I love the rugged unshaven jaw and muscled body. Great cover!
Kudos to author Mary Wine!! Another great Highland romance!
Mary Wine takes you into the rugged Highlands and into the heart of their kilted warriors with her unforgettable Highlander Series. In Highland Heat, she brings us the story of Quinton Cameron, a true Highland warrior, and the woman he desires, the strong willed, Deidre Chattan. This is the story that I have been waiting to read, and I have to say that I was highly impressed. Mary Wine has this way of writing where she incorporates the smallest of historical details that really make the book come to life. If you are looking for a historical romance that offers not only romance, history, and tension, but strong plot, and even stronger characters, then Highland Heat is the book for you.
This is the third and final book in Mary Wine’s Highland Heat trilogy, and while it is part of a series it can be read as a stand alone. Although trust me, once you have read on you will want to read the other books in this series.
Highland Heat is the third in Wine’s Highlander series. Once again, Wine delivers romantic banter, excitement, and escape.
Those that read her earlier novel To Conquer A Highlander are familiar with Deirdre Chattan, the eldest daughter who was manipulated and betrayed by her Douglas lover. But in Highland Heat, Deirdre has matured - she’s had to live with the consequences of her seduction and she’s determined not to bring dishonor to her family. Deirdre is willing to sacrifice a great deal - everything that she has - in order to live up to her father’s expectations. Deirdre’s sense of honor makes her an interesting and sympathetic romantic lead.
As Deirdre and her lover face intrigue, plot twists, unfortunate encounters, and romantic interludes, fans of historical fiction will surely find Highland Heat a fun, satisfying read.
The third book in Mary Wines Highlander series, Highland Heat is full of the vivid imagery of Scotland and complex, captivating characters. Readers will fall in love with fiery heroine, Deidre Chattan and powerful, hero Quinton Cameron. Highland Heat as the name implies is full of passion and romance that will leave readers panting for more. Wines ability to get into the minds and hearts of her Highland characters sets the bar high for other historical romance novelists.
Deidre Chattan is a ruined woman. A misguided love affair with a man from a rival clan nearly destroyed her life. Now, banished to a convent Deidres passionate spirit is hard to hold down. When the Queen of Scotland comes to convent in desperation, Deidre embarks on a mission to save the queen and draw her pursuers in another direction. What she doesnt expect is Highland Laird Quinton Cameron. Quinton has spent much of his time trying to keep the rival clans from warring with each other. His loyalty to king and country runs deep as he plans to help the queen escape. Then he encounters Deidre and his plans are totally derailed. Will the two be able to conquer the passion they have for life and each other? Or will they be consumed by the flames of desire and war?
Deirdre Chattan is a character we have seen before in the series. But, only as a minor character. Highland Heat brings her into sharp focus with her uncanny wit and stubborn attitude. She is determined to regain her honor despite her letting her heart rule her head in the past. Wines character development in this book is very well done. Deidre is portrayed in the vein of most Highland women. She is a warrior in heart and mind. She is loyal to her family, her clan and her king. She has a very passionate nature which is what tends to get her into trouble.
I loved the way that the author gets away from the cliche "Opposites attract!," with this one. These two main characters could not have been more alike. Quinton Cameron is a Highland Laird. He is fierce and rugged and full of spirit and raw power. His own passionate nature rivals that of Deidre in every way. He is used to getting what he wants and he wants her. But, she isnt about to give over that easily. The tension that simmers between these characters is only second to the absolutely searing passion they share. They fight about as much as they love, which makes for a great story. Wine gives us the perfect hero in Quinton. He is gruff and sharp in some ways and very gentle and vulnerable in others.
This book really packs a romantic punch. If you are looking for a tame romance, this probably isnt it! I loved the romantic scenes in the book and thought they were tastefully done. But, they are not for the faint of heart or for younger readers. This book is for passionate women who love to read about scorching love that takes the characters by surprise and fills the reader with longing. I loved the heat in this one and almost had to fan myself a couple of times LOL...
Wine has a great affinity for showing the reader what Scotland is like. Being of Scottish ancestry I am always looking to see how a writer is able to convey what Scotland is all about. Wine does an excellent job of portraying Scotland in the 1400s. The men and women were fierce and determined, warriors. The places they lived were not the easiest and the situations they faced were difficult. Wines descriptions of the scenery and the people are very well written giving the reader a sense of being a part of the story, seeing it through the eyes of the character.
I would recommend this one to historical romance lovers and those who love Highland characters. Wine does such a wonderful job of bringing them to life. This is a book filled with loyalty and love and lots of passion. Not one you want to miss!
Im giving this one 4 out of 5 apples from my book bag!
If you like hot and sexy Scottish medieval books then this is the series for you! I love Mary Wines books! Whilst this is the third book in the series it can be read alone without any disadvantage at all. The books is written with that wonderful Scottish drawl which I find brings the story to life as I can hear it in my head.
Deidre was one of my favourite sisters and I couldnt wait to read her story. She is a feisty woman who has gained the right to make her own decisions. Her strong determination makes her a challenge for Quinton.
I like the way unusual way in which Quinton came to capture Deidre. It must be challenging for romance writers to come up with inventive ways for them to get together. However, for the 3 books Ive read of Mary Wines she has done it very successfully. The chemistry between Deidre and Quinton is electric and it keeps the pages turning. When they finally get together be careful not to burn your fingers turning the pages!
"This exciting Scottish romance is enough to heat up your night."
Deidre Chattan is a young, strong-willed, passionate Scot. It is the year 1439 and Deidres father has sent her and her dowry to an abbey because she defied her fathers choice of husband and gave herself to another, who she then discovered didnt love her. It is not where she wants to be.
Highland Laird Quinton Cameron fancies Deidre and lets her know it when he stops at the abbey. But he is on a mission to find the queen, so he must leave Deidre there. He intends to return to explore his feelings and warns her to send word if the queen stops by the abbey.
The queen does stop at the abbey late that night and meets Deidre. The queen is trying to make it to her lovers home, but knows that there are those who would capture her so another can assume the throne. She notices Deidres features and size are similar to hers, so she convinces Deidre to dress in her clothes and lay a trail so she can sneak away to her lover. The queen promises Deidre a place in her court. Deidre does not want to stay in the abbey or become a nun. A place in the queens court will elevate her in her fathers eyes, so she agrees to the plan.
Deidres mission is successful in that she is captured and hauled away to none other than Laird Camerons land. Once he arrives and discovers the deception, he loathes letting her go. He vows to keep her there as his woman. Because Quinton had previously set to wed, and has placed Deidre in the womans sleeping quarters, she does not realize his true feelings. She will not be his mistress. Even though Quinton and Deidre have hot chemistry boiling between them, she wants to see her father proud of her, so she plans her escape. It is through that escape that Deidre learns the extent of her role in the plot and the means that Quinton will take to get her back.
Mary Wines HIGHLAND HEAT is sure to excite readers. The author creates fantastic chemistry between the two main characters and the plot does not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed this Scottish story. It was a pleasure to be so wittingly entertained.
Yes! For a tale that begins in a convent, Highland Heat sweeps along with fierce passions for land, clan, and kin, not to mention the fiery passion that flares up between Dierde Chattan and Quinton Cameron that is as elemental, raw, and beautiful as the Scottish Highlands.
An irresistible wildness inside Dierde responds to the savageness, strength, and bluntness of Quinton, but staying with him will not bring honor to her father, which is something she feels she must do after dishonoring him by her past willful act. With her strong will, work ethic, guilt, determination, cunning, and capacity for love, Dierde is a powerful heroine that lures the reader into remarkable vicarious adventuressome scary, others rewarding, and some emotionally enlightening. But, best of all, the fierce, passionate love she brings to life scorches the pages of Highland Heat. It flares up and matches the onslaught of Quinton’s lust that he refuses to call love.
The powerful, wealthy Laird Quinton Cameron, Earl of Liddell, rides herd on the Scottish clans to keep them from fighting each other, hoping they can stand strong together against the English, but century-old habits of feuds and fighting among themselves just refuse to die. Even with demanding duties, Quinton thinks of the feisty hellion Dierde that matches him snarl for snarl and growl for growl by day then responds with unbridled passion as they make love in the dark Scottish night, only to wake up ready to stand her ground and do battle with him again.
Mary Wine’s description of Drumdeer, Quinton’s fortified, magnificent castle with the exquisite eagle tower makes the reader see and feel the opulence inside the stronghold.
Highland Heat is like a fine tapestry with Dierde and Quinton for the focus with muted patterns of political intrigues, cultural norms, religious beliefs, and the indomitable, beautiful Scottish Highlands making a spellbinding designs that lures the reader in and does not disappoint because it truly delivers the heat. The love sceneshot and fiercealmost melt the pages together.
Each book in this Scottish Highland Trilogy stands alone. Highland Heat, the final one, is awesome and one to keep to read again and again. Details that intrigue, excite, and pull the reader into this time in Scottish history with characters that are breathtaking make this one a keeper.
Plot:
Deirdre Chattan went to live in a convent to repent after her affair that left her in ruin. She had no idea what she will do after that, but she knows that she wants to bring honour to her clan again. Then Quinton Cameron shows up looking for the queen, and he has not forgotten Deirdres hellion ways. When fate brings them together again sparks fly.
My thoughts:
The blurb does say some things that dont happen. They never truly protect king and crown. There is some politics in the background but its more about their passion, and how a marriage to her could bring clans together, so who should have her?
This is book 3 in a series, but they are all standalone so even if I had read none of the others I could just have jumped in and missed nothing. Deirdre slept with a man who promised her marriage but he just used her. That is why she is at a convent to calm down a bit, but not to become a nun. She knows Quinton from before since his friend married her sister in book 2, and in that book they shared one passionate kiss. But now she has no dowry anymore and a bad reputation. But of course these two are thrown together again and there is passion. They cant keep their hands of each other, but she does give it a valiant try.
I did like Deirdre, sure she was an idiot in the past for falling for lies, but he must have been good at it. Now she wants to be stronger, and she wants to do what is right. Quinton is all man, and alpha. He also has a broken heart just like her. They were both betrayed in the past.
Other than that there is the woman who betrayed him to marry someone else and she wants to cause more mischief, oh she was one wicked evil woman. Then there is also the bigger politics. Because if Deirdre married Quinton then that would form a bigger alliance that stands against another alliance, and there is someone who does not want that. Dangers ahead.
One thing though, I was not too happy about how he kept telling her to lose herself to her passion, I felt he was being an ass in a way. He can sleep with whoever he wants to, if she does it she is ruined, double ruined. A woman has no choices like that. He just wanted to get in under her skirts. But ok I forgive him cos she did really want him, even if it meant never marrying him.
Recommendation and final thoughts:
A nice historical romance with lots of passion, and some intrigue too. A brave highlander and one fiery lass. But there is also a lot of Scottish accent in the book, and that makes it a bit harder to understand when some of them talk.
Highland Heat is simply awesome!
Cameron wants Deidre as his mistress, but she’s as stubborn as she is independent and always running in the other direction. She wants to hold out for Cameron’s love, but her desire keeps her coming back to Cameron’s bed at night.
I’m so happy that Ms. Wine is now penning historical romances, as she has an incredible ability and makes you feel like you’ve gone back in time. I simply adore historical romances and would love to live in a castle…if they only had indoor plumbing (lol)!
Highland Heat feels very realistic and Ms. Wine makes me want my very own sexy laird (yum)! It’s a sensual read that will surely get your blood pumping, your heart pounding and your temperature rising!
Readers will recall Deirdre Chattan from To Conquer a Highlander and be thrilled to read her story. Deirdre is a strong woman and it will take an equally strong man to tame her. Wine has created the perfect complement in Quinton Cameron. They fight just as passionately as they love while intrigue abounds and readers turn the pages faster and faster!

Review:
After falling for the promises of a Douglas and loosing her virginity, Deidre Chattans dowry has been given to the church and shes been placed there as well. Shes not there to take vows as shed definitely not worthy like her younger sister but shes there to do penance. She understands this and while shes not exactly happy, shes complying the best she can.
Quinton Cameron is a highland lord and is searching for a run away queen. Hes been drawn to Deidre from the first time he meet her, her fiery spirit calling to him. Learning shes in an abbey that hes been sent to search unsettles him. Though the queen is not found, Quinton leaves some men to watch the general area.
James IIs mother does arrive at the abbey that very night. A quick plan is decided on after the queen discovers how closely Deidre resembles her. If they change clothes, Deidre could leave the searchers after her while the queen clothed in rough church robes would be able to get away. Deidre sees this as an ideal opportunity to escape the church and get the independence she desires.
The plan goes according to plan with Quintons men capturing the "queen". There is no way for Deirdre to evade them, though she tries before Quinton discovers his mens mistake. Will he understand her reasons or will her return her to the abbey? During this unsettled time in Scotland, alliances are necessary and Quinton has to decide what to do with Deidre, follow his head or his heart.
This is the second book in Mary Wines series about the Chattan sisters. Though the first book would give you a lot of background information, its not necessary to read it to fully understand and enjoy this book. Those that read the first though will enjoy watching the manipulations that are happening to secure the happiness of several highland lords.
These characters are great. Deidre is feisty, opinionated and really doesnt care about Quintons high social status. Though she finds herself attracted to Quinton and desiring him, she will not compromise her values or thoughts. The only compromise she makes it to keep their discussions private. Quinton is a typical man. He knows hes right about everything and his opinion is the only one that matters. It takes quite a bit before he realizes that everything isnt exactly going according to his desires and Deidre definitely is her own person.
The time frame that this story is placed into is one of turmoil. James II is the ruler of Scotland but too young to take the throne. He has advisors to basically run the country. His mother is still young and wishes to remarry but that would give her new husband more power than anyone wants to give any man she chooses. Plots, promises and deception are all working behind the scenes and out and about the countryside. Knowing who you can trust may keep you alive so you need to be careful with whatever you do!
This is another outstanding historical novel by Ms. Wine. Her highlanders are not only sexy and hot in their kilts but they have high values and high standards. Her women are not chattel but thinking women who have no trouble expressing their thoughts. They are intelligent and well educated. There is nothing common place or boring in this story!
This is also not your mothers or grandmothers historical. There are definitely sex scenes so exciting that they break the bed! No demure, and they closed the door. Instead, you are there as they learn each others bodies. Shocking, I know, but oh so delicious.
Now, Im not sure what anyone else could want in a historical romance. There are men in kilts, chases through the woods, steamy sex, and devious plots. There is also an unexpected hero which is always awesome. The passion Ms. Wine has for this story comes through her characters in ways youll love to read.
As in Highland Hellcat (2010), Wine uses her experiences with a historical reenactment group to give life to this tale set in 1439 in Scotland. Deirdre Chattan, daughter of a highland chief, is exiled to an abbey after having sex with her fiancé, who then jilted her. When Dierdre comes face to face with the mother of the boy king of England, Joan Beaufort is on the run to her lover. Because Deirdre looks so much like her, Joan wants the young woman to trade places with her to evade the king’s evil adviser. After she does, Deirdre is captured by highland lord Quinton Cameron and held in his keep because he’s unsure who she really is. The chemistry between them is volatile, so after Deirdre escapes, Quinton pursues her tirelessly. Although Deirdre’s concerns about women’s rights and freedom step over the line to twenty-first-century sensibilities, Wine provides a lively and exciting adventure around Dierdre’s search for love.
In 2010s Highland Hellcat, Deirdre Chattan took a lover, who used her and cast her aside. This dramatic and vivid sequel, set in 1439, opens with Deirdre in a convent, atoning for her sin. When Joan Beaufort, widow of King James I, seeks sanctuary in the convent, Deirdre disguises herself as the queen and sets out to draw away her pursuers. Quinton Cameron, earl of Liddell and a friend of Deirdres father, captures her, discovers the subterfuge, and decides to keep her in custody so he can seduce her. Determined never to trust a man or her own passionate nature, Deirdre tries to resist her attraction to gruff yet gentle Quinton. Scorching love scenes threaten to set the sheets aflame as Deirdres sparring with Quinton creates the perfect romantic tension for their lusty affair. (Mar.) STARRED REVIEW
