Maggie O’Malley is a fascinating character who grabbed my interest from the word go. A tough, down to earth witch who works with a supernatural agency keeping other supernaturals in line. And did I mention that she has looks, too? And then there is the seductive demon Declan. He really fascinated me. The chemistry between these two characters was enthralling. Demons Are a Girl’s Best Friend also has a suspense-filled plot. I was on the edge of my seat from the vision which revealed that a teenager could be involved in the downfall of life as we know it, to Maggie’s interactions with said teenager in trying to keep her safe, to the search to find the teenager after she goes missing. This is one of the best paranormal romances I have read, and I would recommend adding it to your reading list as soon as you can get your hands on it!
Declan is proprietor of an underground club and busy demon portal. No way hell allow his demon race to be blamed for the malicious acts of some crazy evil Mayans. But hes already got his hands full when the sexy witch offers him a challenge he cant refuse . . .
Amidst the rising flames of their steamy love affair, Maggie and Declan are damned if they do, and even more damned if they dont . . .
Linda Wisdom crafted an amazing, fun, comical, and romantic story with this latest release. Demons Are A Girls Best Friend is the beginning of a new series but falls perfectly into place with her Hex series. Instead of continuing with Jazz, Blair, and Stasia, Linda ingeniously chose to tell about another witch, Maggie, who is one of the 13 witches expelled from the Witches School in the 1300s for casting a curse on a nobleman. For those of you who love strong, vibrant, kick-ass, heroines, this is the book for you. I promise you will fall head-over-heel for Maggie, as well as, her demon lover, Declan, and the entire realm that Linda Wisdom has envisioned for us. I enjoy reading all of Lindas books, but for some special reason, I am fascinated with Demons Are A Girls Best Friend, although I have to admit, I did miss the chaotic antics of Fluff and Puff . . . :)
Thank you Linda for such an amazing read. I can always count on your stories to lighten the stress of every day life. You have an awesome gift of a true story-teller.
This is the first book I have read by Linda Wisdom and it wont be my last. The book is the first book in a new paranormal romance series and the story is about Maggie who is a witch who works as a paranormal police officer. I really liked the character of Maggie.... and Declan was smoking hot! He sizzled on the pages! The book had me giggling and anxiously awaiting the next book in the series to see what has happened to these characters!
Ive been in the mood for a good romance lately and this book fit my mood perfectly! It was a book that I couldnt put down and I thoroughly enjoyed. One of my favorite things about this book was the story line itself. I loved the mix of demons, ancient Mayans, evil gods coming back to life, and a supernatural law enforcement team that didnt have to play by any rules. Maggie was a kick-ass character that wasnt afraid to be herself and get what she wanted. She was vulnerable enough that the romance that developed between her and Declan was both sweet and refreshing. I thought that both main characters were well developed and helped to make the novel that much better.
Ive read books by this author before but thought that this was going to be a separate series. Instead, it turned out to be loosely tied in with her other books (characters from previous books were mentioned briefly) but this novel had a darker feel to it. I thought that it was also more suspenseful than my previous reads by her, and I really liked the change that this book provided. I hope that she writes more books with Maggie and her supernatural team in the future as I just didnt get enough. This was a really good addition to the paranormal romance genre in my opinion, and I will be looking forward to reading whatever books that this author writes in the future. Recommended without hesitation!
Disclosure: This book was sent to me for review by Danielle at Sourcebooks. My many thanks for the chance to read and enjoy this book!
P.S.- I thought I would share a link to a review of Hex Appeal that I posted previously by the same author as well as a link to Wicked By Any Other Name. Ive also read 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover but never ended up reviewing it. All three books were enjoyable reads but this one was the best in my opinion. I also wanted to warn you that Im hoping to flood you with reviews this week as somehow Ive fallen a bit behind. Just thought I would give you all a heads up :P
Maggie OMalley, witch and elite member of the Hellion Guard, loves her work - taking out the unsavory paranormal types that frequent places like the notorious club, Damnation Alley. In fact, one of her first arrests takes place in the club when shes sent to apprehend a Bloater. That doesnt turn out well - for the bloater or the bar - though it does introduce her to Declan, the clubs new handsome, half-fire demon owner.
Declan has worked hard to earn the rights to Damnation Alley and he means to keep it. And he means to keep his sister away from his father who wants to sell her to cement his ambitions in the demon realm. Like Declan, his sister is half-demon and lately shes been having dark, dangerous visions of the future.
Maggie, assigned to keep an eye on Declan, finds him too attractive and too charming - a bad condition for any single witch who doesnt want to consort with the enemy. But even though she doesnt want to admit it, Declan has a sense of honor and a strong moral code unlike other fire demons shes encountered. When his sister is threatened, Maggie offers to take her to the Hellion Guard compound for safekeeping and for training on how to use her gift.
As Declan and Maggie learn to trust each other and explore their feelings for each other, Maggie is assigned her most important task - guarding a teenager marked for a demonic ritual death and averting the end of the world as we know it.
Demons Are A Girls Best Friend is a fast paced, witty tale with elements of danger laced with passionate love and uproarious humor. One of my favorite scenes involves a cloud raining down on Declan...inside his office. But the love scenes are the best as Declan enters Maggies dreams and thats not surprising since Declan, even as a half-demon, is pure dream boat.
Ms Wisdom doesnt stop with dreamy heroes and hot love scenes. She includes a list of fascinating characters who keep the reader enthralled. One of these is Elle, a black widow spider who surfs the web looking for a way to keep her lovers alive. And when shes not doing that, shes moonlighting as a sparkly tattoo/jewelry for Maggie.
All in all, this is one Linda Wisdom book you dont want to miss.
Maggie is a fiesty character with grit. She is a witch who is also part of a task force that brings down bad guys and she does it very well. She has no desire for love or babies, so it a little out of her element when she is thrown into a new mission. Protect a teenage girl who is slated to be a human sacrifice and she is partnered with a yummy half-deman who goes by Declan.
Declan owns a club that also has a portal to the otherworld and he guards it well. When he teams up with Maggie to protect young Courtney, their close proximity flares up their libidos. They need to stay on top of the case and keep their desire for one another under the radar as demons and other world beings are not supposed to be together. With some sassy and humorous dialogue and genuine likable characters, Linda Wisdom has penned another fabulous paranormal romp! Youll love the supernatural beings introducted in Demons Are A Girls Best Friend and there is some serious butt-kicking to boot! Sizzling romance and a fun page-turning plot will keep you entertained. Magically delicious!
This was a fun book to read as I love dooms day type books and when you add in the fun of demons, witches and other creatures then it’s even more fun. What I think I love the most about this book is how it intertwines myth with things we know like the Mayans who we know existed and were a group to be reckoned with, though I do wish they had been featured more in the book. There around for about two seconds and gone. I received an advanced copy of the book so I hope a little more detail was added in the final cut.
The story is full of fun, gore and teenage drama, so if that is something you like then you should check this book out. Oh yes, there is a lot of romance involved too!
MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT
Maggie is an old witch, ok, not that she looks old, but still she has the wisdom of age. She works for the Hellion Guard, a secret police-like agency for paranormals. Her new job is to protect a teen, who seems to have a lot of enemies including some ancient Mayans who want to take over the world. She literally runs into Declan, a smoking hot partial demon that runs a nightclub when a bust goes bad. The two have definite sparks and Maggies sharp tongue is a pleasure to read about. The two have massive chemistry even though neither will admit it and only join forces when the evil Mayans try to sacrifice the teen in order to bring about world domination. You need to read the book in order to find out if the two can save the teen and prevent world wide destruction.
Linda Wisdom is one of my favorite paranormal authors and her Hex series is loads of fun. She carries over the snappy dialogue from her previous series and this one has just the right amount of romance that is never forced or predictable. I love how she has the pace perfected and matched with humor. There is never a dull moment and now I cant wait for the next one in the series.
I was so excited for another installment of Linda Wisdom’s witches. Maggie is one of the witches, along with Blaire and Jaz, that has been roaming for more than 700 years. Maggie is a little different from the other witches in that she doesn’t spend much time with humans. Now she has to face one of the most dreaded type of humans - a teenage girl. There were times that I was laughing out loud and Maggie learns to deal with Courtney. There were also times that I was a little jealous of Maggie’s spell casting. I would have love to be able to use some of them on my little ones! Declan is one hot hero - literally. He is half-fire demon, but one hundred percent good guy. I loved how there was never a moment when it even appeared that he wasn’t on Maggie’s side. He is always there for her. I would have liked his presence to be felt more in the story, because I felt like we didn’t get to really know him like we did Maggie. DEMONS ARE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND is a fun paranormal romance.
the book girl gives DEMONS ARE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND a 4/5
Demons Are a Girls Best Friend is the latest paranormal book from Linda Wisdom. She has written Hex in High Heels and Wicked by Any Other Name to name a few. The story takes place in an alternate society where vampires, witches, demons and other creepy crawly creatures.
Maggie, the lead female character is a witch who works for the Hellion Guard. Her job is to keep the demons in line. Declan, the lead male character, is a half demon who is the new owner of a club called Damnation Alley.
In this club is a portal leading to the underworld and Declan is responsible to keep the creatures from leaving the underworld and creating havoc.
Sparks fly when these two people meet and end up working on a case together. Enter Courtney, a teenager with lots of attitude and her boyfriend who isnt who he appears to be. Maggie is ordered by the Hellion Guard to protect Courtney. See, Courtney has a bit of Mayan blood in her and she has been chosen to be the virgin sacrifice. What ensues is a story with lots of passion, danger and the beginnings of a steamy romance. This was my first book by Linda Wisdom that I have read and I enjoyed it a lot.
This book should be read by anyone who loves a great paranormal romance.

Review: YOWZA! Smokin hot and action packed. If you like to be kept on the edge of your seat then let me recomend this one :) With enough totally funny things to keep the story ...well not light exactly but it sure kept me entertained :)
A winner for me for sure. You can be that I will be waiting for the next work from Ms Wisdom. I have not nejoyed a book like this in a long time and I am so glad that I was able to review it and let enveryone that I know hear that this one ROCKS!!!!
My Thoughts:
Maggie is quite the sassy witch, who has seen a lot in her life time. Maggie is an expert at what she does, protect innocent people from supernatural things that mean them harm. Maggie is normally calm, cool, and collected, until she meets Declan. Declan makes her think about things she never dared to before, a normal life and settling down. Declan brings about such strong emotions in Maggie that she would rather forget them. Hes a demon for Hades sake! Declan for his part, is not your typical demon. Not just because of his lineage, but because he wants a good honest life for himself. He has worked hard to be where he is and falling in love with a witch was not in his plans.
Both Maggie and Declan were not expecting to find love but they do. They are both a bit stubborn or strong willed, and with such strong personalities you wouldnt think they work well together, but they do. The sparks fly quickly when they meet, but the actual payoff to the romantic declarations of Maggie and Declan are a slow burn. It is not instantaneous, and I appreciate that. Supernatural or no, love at first site is a bit ridiculous. The romance in this book is very satisfying.
As for the rest of the story, I loved the world that Wisdom has created. The Hellion Guards magical compound, the messenger ferrets, and most of all Maggies close friends and Hellion Guard partners, a spider named Elle and an elf named Sybil, were easy to imagine and made for an entertaining read. Elle and Sybil are excellent secondary characters in their own right. Maybe they will have their own stories? Although the Spider may be a bit difficult :) The mystery aspect was also quite good because Mayan myths dont normally come up in my books. It was something different which I appreciated. As for the teenager Courtney who must be protected from the Mayans, she worked my nerves a bit, but shes a teenager, so I guess she should. I did like how Maggie saw herself in Courtney, and made her think about possibly having a family of her own someday.
Overall this was a great read, that made me forget about my toothache and I love that. Entertainment at its finest and I am sorry I have waited so long to read Wisdoms works.
When I got this book I was sick and not feeling well. As my family knows by now when Mom is sick she will grab a stack of books and burrow into the couch which is what I did. The book on top was this book, and I have to say that I was so into the book that I forgot all about being sick and miserable and was completely caught up with Maggie and Declan’s story.
Declan is really what did it for me on this book. There is so much more to him that just being a fire demon. No I am not going to tell you what that more is because I think it is part of the discovery of this book. But I will put it out there that those that he loves he will do absolutely anything to protect. When Maggie comes into his life it is not at a very good time for him, both professionally and personally. But there is just something about here that won’t let him walk away from her and his attraction to her.
Maggie is an excellent guard. She has found her niche in the world and is perfectly content with it. So when she meets Declan and the sparks fly she isn’t exactly happy about it, nor is she unhappy about it. As she comes to know him, she discovers that there is more going on that what she thinks, and she comes to depend on him.
Throw in a moody teen-ager with a questionable boy friend, a group of people bent on taking over the world by using dark magic. One really hot demon, did I fail to mention that Declan is SMOKIN HOT, and not because he is a fire demon. A witch that has a very clear set of rules about how things should be done. A quirky cast of secondary characters that make you shake your head and laugh because of how they interact. Add all of this together and you get one really good book.
When I was done with the book I made Mike go out and by the other books in the series, sadly he only came home with books 3 and 4, as he couldn’t find books 1 and 2. I read all of them that day, that is how much I enjoyed them.
I was so excited to see another book by Linda Wisdom. Having read, and very much enjoyed, the zany characters in her Hex books I wondered if Demons are a Girl’s Best Friend would measure up. And it does! The story line begins with an introduction to Maggie, an endearing witch with attitude, who works for the Hellion Guard. The HG works tirelessly to protect all creatures of this world and, of course, other worlds as well. Maggie’s first assignment takes her to an underground club, Damnation Alley, where Ms. Wisdom introduces the readers to the owner, Declan, who is half demon.
The attraction between Maggie and Declan can be felt instantly and you know this is going to be a fantastic roller coaster ride of a relationship. Mixed into this is a group of Mayan priests, a young teenager that steals the heart of not only Maggie but also Declan, every imaginable and unimaginable paranormal creature, and quite a heated sexual attraction. All of this together gives you a book that you just can’t put down. The worst part of the book is having it end.
Ms. Wisdom is able to bring creatures to life that you would have never even conceived of and with that brings creativity, hilarity, and passion. She is able to weave plots and Maggie’s antics throughout the story line and they all fit just like puzzles pieces. Demons are a Girl’s Best Friend was an enjoyable and intriguing story and I look forward to reading many more by Linda Wisdom.
Rated 5 Delightful Divas and Recommended Read by Dharma!
Linda Wisdom has taken her sexy witch series to a new level by adding demons who are hotter than Hades and a story that will keep you captivated to the end.
Linda Wisdom drew in a large fan base with her paranormal romance series, and now she takes the witches to a-whole-nother level with Demons are a Girls Best Friend. Full of Linda Wisdoms signature humor and magical zest, this books witty prose and passionate romance adds to the authors talent and continues the series with poise. Unforgettable and entirely unique, the series is a far jump from the average paranormal romance and one you will want to read time and time again.
Linda Wisdoms Paranormal Romance Fiction Hex Series
The Hex Series by Linda Wisdom is based on thirteen witches banned from the Witchs Academy because of an illegal spell cast by one of the young women. Now, hundreds of years later, all thirteen find themselves still banned from the Academy due to one misstep or another. A powerful force to be reckoned with, these thirteen stick together when necessary but ultimately live separate lives and follow utterly different paths.
Each book contains some recurring characters but have different witches in the starring roles. The first two novels; 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover and Hex Appeal start with Jazz Tremaine; a curse eliminator who is in a love/hate relationship with a vampire, while the third novel; Wicked by any Other Name, is the story of witch Stasi Romanov; a romantic and sweet witch who owns a lingerie and book boutique and falls for a wizard. Book four, Hex in High Heels is the tale of feisty Blair Fitzpatirick and a loveable Border Collie shape shifter named Jake.
Having had witches fall in love with a vampire, a shape shifter and a wizard, Linda Wisdom has introduced a completely new breed to the mix, which you may have guessed, demons. Though Jazz Tremaines two books were my personal favorites, the series definitely grows into something unpredictable and incredibly entertaining as it branches into new worlds and lives. Set apart as the first, but not last, demon based book in the Hex Series, Demons are a Girls Best Friend compliments the authors talent and fits in perfectly with its predecessors.
Romance Blooms in Unlikely Places in this Romance Fiction Novel
Demons are a Girls Best Friend is the tale of the more action packed witch; Maggie OMalley and the demon she needs in her life, Declan. Their story may be a little too sweet for such a butch heroine and a demon of all things, but the romance certainly ignites, especially with Declan being a fire demon. The book contained the same humor the series has became known for, with laugh-out-loud moments carrying on right up until the very last lines. The romance fiction novel is a perfect example of escapist literature, because the prose is so perfectly created as to whisk readers away and have them completely invested in the story and forgetting the burdens of their own lives.
The characters are all full of life and easily understood, though I would have liked a little more information into the past of Declan and how he became the owner of the dark nightclub he runs. Declan is a wonderful hero for a romance novel, even being a demon, because of his love for the heroine and his alpha-male persona. I expected him to be a little more tougher, a little more mean perhaps, but he pulled me in by books end.
The plot line was well established and capable of making readers believe in every supernatural entity it mentions. Fairy criminal investigators, black widow sidekicks and ferret messengers are all characters that make appearances in the novel, and make the novel as fantastic as it is. Maggie and Declan find themselves battling Mayan enemies that are intent upon the end of the world, and they have to befriend one another to succeed.
Maggie is a well written character, full of attitude and lives up to the way I had pictured her from cameos in previous books. Part of the elite Hellion Guard, a supernatural law enforcement that would put the Navy SEALs to shame, Maggie lives on a compound that is highly entertaining and full of wonderful imagery. The cover itself lends credibility to the image the author creates for Maggie, but doesnt do justice to Declan. All in all, the book is well-written and recommended for anyone who would like a a hexy series that will keep you laughing, while making you hot by the pool.
Where to start, we have a witch and a demon, some crazy Mayans, and doom on the horizon. Ok back to the beginning. The book is about Maggie who is a witch and works for the Hellion Guards. They keep the supernaturals in check and sees to that no humans know that elves, gnomes, trolls, warlocks, or anything like that exists. She is kick-ass, 700 years old, and can take care of herself. She has attitude and I liked her. Not to mention that she has one awesome side-kick, a tattoo named Ella that can talk and walk around (talking about a spider here.) Ella brought humour to the book.
Then there is Declan whom she meets while investigating a case at his club. He is a firedemon, hot (yes literally), but he is also nice, and I fell at once. Gotta love a demon that is in touch with his human side. These two want each other at once, but since demons and other beings do not mix its slow, and it builds up.
Its a nice world, where you can find a bunch of different supernaturals, and humans do not know about them. And in this one something dark is coming, Mayans wants blood sacrifices to bring forth some evil God called the Destroyer. Oh I like a good evil god now and again.
The side characters are fun, mostly Ella, cos she rocks, but the elf Sybil is nice and has a sense of humour, and then there is the teenager Maggie has to protect, and she was one cool kid.
Here and there people are mentioned, I did not mind but I did realize that they are from this other series she has written. For me it worked even though I didnt know them.
Conclusion:
I ended up liking this book, I think it was all cos of Declan, he was just so hot and sweet. And like the title says, demons are a girls best friend. The book has passion, ass-kicking, humour, and a good plot.
Rating:
I enjoyed it
Wow is all I can say about Demons Are a Girls Best Friend by Linda Wisdom. Linda blew me away with Demons Are a Girls Best Friend. Demons Are a Girls Best Friend is full of witches, demons, and all kinds of paranormal characters.
Maggie has her own team among The Hellion Gaurd and she is a witch. The Hellion Guard is a supernatural military task force. One night while she is out on a job a demon, Declan, catches her eye. But demons and witches are a bad combo. I enjoyed Maggie from page one. I loved how mouthy she was and I really enjoyed her smart remark. I love characters that are sassy and Linda did a wonderful job at that with Maggie.
Besides Maggie and Declan, there is a group of wonderful secondary characters. Without the great group of minor characters Demons Are a Girls Best Friend wouldnt be as good. They do a lot for the story line. However the black widow spider I could have done without, but that is only because I am a big baby when it comes to spiders. But even the spider was a great addition. I loved how she had a computer and was trying to find herself a mate. That was a great addition.
I have to admit I didnt read the Hex series by Linda Wisdom. I have heard good things about them but just havent got to it. But after reading Demons Are a Girls Best Friend I will be moving them up my TBR pile. Linda hooked me with Demons Are a Girls Best Friend and I want to read more from her.
Overall I really enjoyed Demons Are a Girls Best Friend and I cant wait for the next installment A Demon Does It Better, coming January 2012. If you can judge a series by the first book than this series promises to be a hit.
I have been a fan of the paranormal genre for as long as I can remember. DEMONS ARE A GIRLS BEST FRIEND is one of my absolute favorites. I was instantly sucked into the plot and couldnt think about anything but reading this book. Linda has made her way into my all-time favorite authors list. If demons, witches and a fun-filled read is what you are in the mood for, this is the perfect book to curl up with.
Meet Maggie OMalley. Maggie works for the Hellion Guard. A secretive law enforcement branch that deals in the unusual. Maggies latest assignment is to provide protection to Declan and his club the Damnation Alley. The Alley has a demon portal. It seems that the Mayans have interest in the portal and that is not all they are interested in. They have targeted a human girl for their sacrifice. Can a demon and a witch really work together?
I am a fan of Linda Wisdom. I love her other witch series. This time she brings..."sexy back" in witches with Demons are a Girls Best Friend! This book reads more like urban fantasy than paranormal. It is darker and edgier. Maggie can kick some serious butt and look good doing it at the same time. Declan and Maggie was smoking together. Declan was such a big, burly man that he needed a woman or witch like Maggie. Maggie and Declan fed off each other. Who knew that a demon and a witch would make a perfect match? Ms. Wisdom did of course. I can not wait to read Undercover Demon, book two.
Maggie O’Malley is a 700+ year old witch who enjoys her job working for the Hellion Guard. A group of elite paranormal militia under the mantle of the Ruling Council, the Hellion Guard is tasked with protecting all creatures in this world and others and it’s right up Maggie’s alley. Maggie has been the champion of the underdog and protector of the innocent for most of her very long life anyway, so it’s a perfect career path. Not only is she pretty and decorative looking, which is a great disguise, let’s not forget she’s damned good in battle with both magic and weapons, too.
Declan is the new owner of Damnation Alley, a busy club catering to paranormals which just happens to sit over an equally busy demon portal. Declan worked long and hard and called in a lot of favors to gain ownership of Damnation Alley when the prior owner, a shady demon named Ratchett, mysteriously disappeared without a trace. With a half-fire demon nature, Declan is angry at the happenings that unfold and is not about to just turn over his information and sources to Maggie when their paths become entwined due to a Mayan cult’s focus on an ancient ritual. He demands to be a part of the solution in return for his help.
This book includes all the things I like best about a Linda Wisdom paranormal. Maggie is both strong and humorous, able to laugh at herself but be down to earth about her own powers and talents. Her pet crystal black widow spider offers sidekick amusement with the spider’s tireless hunt for a way to keep a mate alive for more than a single night. Maggie has regrets and a past that continues to drive her forward in her career but isn’t overly angsty and emo over it, which is nice.
Declan is sexy but not one of the all-powerful, all-knowing heroes. He’s alpha, though, in a very fire-demon sort of way. I like his vulnerability and his own determination to do right by his loved ones. He’s smart and hot at the same time, even if Maggie tends to run the battles. I love that Declan admires Maggie’s skills. The sex, by the way, is sizzling and adds to the story but is not the focus of it.
The rest of the assorted cast of characters runs the gamut from teammates that wear fur or drink blood to messenger ferrets hopped up on caffeine. I particularly loved Courtney, the teen Maggie is tasked with protecting, in all her teen-girl-angst.
Demons are a Girl’s Best Friend was a lively, fun read that kept my attention and had me rooting for Maggie and Declan all the way.
Maggie O’Malley is a witch who’s used to being in charge. She’s over 700-years-old. She leads a Special Ops team for the Hellion Guard. She’s battle tested and as tough as they come. Got a nasty creature in need of dispatching? Maggie’s your witch. She’s seen it all. Been there, done that, and bring it on. Until she’s ordered to be the guardian of a teenaged girl and meets a sexy half-demon who’s more than he seems.
Declan has worked hard to become boss at Damnation Alley. As a half-breed, he is unlike the rest of his kind in more ways than one. Still, he thinks he’s got everything under control until a witch with attitude to spare turns everything upside down. And of course, she would be the one he is destined for.
This was a fun book to read. Maggie is tough, stubborn, powerful, and quite prickly. She doesn’t back down and rarely apologizes. Although she’s closer to 1,000 years old, she often acts like a young woman in her twenties. And she has no room in her life for a long-term relationship. Nor does she have the temperament to tolerate one. It all makes for an interesting character.
Once Declan enters her life, that all changes. Wisdom doesn’t waste a lot of time making Maggie fight her feelings for him. Rather, Maggie recognizes what she could have with him and makes the choice to wrap herself up in it, without a grand epiphany or lot of self-doubt. Aside from a “Mine” moment or two, Declan does much the same.
Demons Are a Girl’s Best Friend sustains a humorous tone throughout. The other members of Maggie’s team provide consistent doses of comic relief. Befanged and furry, they may stumble and argue, but the sense of camaraderie and affection between themselves and their leader is apparent. Maggie’s frustration and bewilderment when faced with taking care of a teenager is funny all by itself.
Maggie and Declan’s romance is sweet and the sex is fairly hot. They compliment each other and both know what they want as lovers. Since there was no huge conflict for them to overcome in order to be with one another, it’s easy to just enjoy their encounters as they are. The constant teasing and sparring they do as a means of foreplay becomes increasingly entertaining as they become more attached, too.
Wisdom has crafted an enjoyable read in Demons Are a Girl’s Best Friend. Even though the humor borders on slapstick sometimes and the novel has a few predictable moments, it’s still a lot of fun. Maybe because, in part at least, it doesn’t try to be too serious. It’s a good, sexy novel, perfect for unwinding with a decent laugh.
Demons Are a Girls Best Friend by Linda Wisdom is a kick-butt, fantastic trip into another world full of witches, demons, and all kinds of other creepy kinds of characters! I was first introduced to Linda Wisdoms books when I read Hex in High Heels (my review) and I loved it so when I saw she was starting a new series I knew I wanted to be in on it. I am so glad I had the opportunity to review Demons Are a Girls Best Friend because I thoroughly enjoyed it and cant wait for the next installment!
Maggie is a witch and she is part of a team called The Hellion Guard which is a supernatural military task force assigned with getting rid of the riff raff in the creature world. She has her own team of assorted supernatural creatures who assist her when they go out to apprehend someone or clean up a place. On a night out when she manages to capture a bloater and mess up a club called Damnation Alley the last thing she expects is to meet a half fire demon who definitely catches her eye. Witches and demons - not a great combo but who can forget how hot Declan is!
Maggie is a great character and I adored her from the beginning. Shes mouthy and tough - now thats a combination! She never fails to have a smart remark for everyone and it definitely kept me laughing throughout the book. Maggie is not someone you want to mess with - even a half demon like Declan treads carefully. If you dont watch your step, shes more than happy to cast a spell that can have you taking a shower in the middle of the room where youre the only one wet.
As much as she tries to ignore her growing attraction to Declan, it seems to only get worse. What can be better than a hot guy who visits your dreams? One thing that isnt better is when Maggie is assigned to protect a young girl from a very sinister and evil plan that has to do with the teenager. Maggie is not impressed - shes not mother material at all! While she tries whining and complaining a great deal, it doesnt seem to get her anywhere and she finds herself meeting the very spunky Courtney. Truthfully, the scary thing is the kid kind of reminds her of herself. From this point on the sparks begin to fly all over the place all the way to a very sizzling ending.
One thing I loved about this book were all the side characters. A few of my favorites were Sybil, a tiny little elf who is Maggies friend at the compound and an interrogator. The other is the black widow spider named Elle who shows up as a tattoo on Maggies shoulder but who can unattach herself and crawl down too! This is a spider who has her own little computer where she spends time trying to find herself a mate that she doesnt manage to kill right off the bat. There are others too from the ferrets who are messengers to all the other hairy creatures who make up the book. Its full of funny and eccentric characters sure to please! I also really liked that Linda makes reference to the characters in her other series like Jazz, Stasi and Blair!
Demons Are a Girls Best Friend is the first in the series and Im already anxious for the next one. Linda Wisdom really does have a knack for writing a great story that will catch you from the beginning and not let go. Her novels are funny and so entertaining especially if you love the magic world like I do. There is a good dose of hanky panky happening on these pages too so be forewarned if thats not your thing but really its not overwhelming whatsoever and adds just the right amount of raciness.
Maggie is a witch who works as a law enforcement officer for paranormal creatures. A case takes her to Declans club; Declan is a demon. The chemistry between these two is hot! There are some problems with Mayan enemies and Maggie and Declan must work together to solve them. This book has many different types of paranormal creatures in it, which was fun to read about. There is steamy romance, good action and interesting characters. This was a fun, quick read. This book was sent to me by Sourcebooks to review.
Linda Wisdom once again hits it out of the ballpark with her latest book, Demons Are a Girls Best Friend. Feisty main character Maggie is an offshoot from Wisdoms popular Jazz Tremaine series. Fans will love this first book in a new series, with hotter than hot demon heroes. Wisdom sticks to her trademark witches, but gives readers a whole new set of paranormal characters that have them a little hot under the collar.
As a Hellion Guard and witch Maggie finds herself in some pretty sticky situations, but its all in a days work. When a chance meeting with the owner of Damnation Alley, an underground club, becomes more than just business, she finds herself wondering what life would be like with a home and family. Declan, is about as hot as you can get, considering hes half-fire demon. As proprietor of the club and administrator of a busy demon portal, he has a lot of his plate. But he still finds time for some steamy romance and saving the world. When Maggie is assigned to protect a young teenage girl who is targeted by blood thirsty Mayan priests. Its up to both she and Declan to stop the ritual before its too late.
Linda Wisdoms ability to create believable paranormal characters is definitely one of her strengths. Her popular Jazz Tremaine series is one example. Taking an offshoot character from the first series Wisdom has created a new set of characters for fans to root for and believe in. Wisdoms affinity for all things witchy hasnt changed, as the main character Maggie is a witch with attitude.
Maggie is a paranormal law enforcement officer who loves her job. She likes nothing more than to get down and dirty with the bad guys. Her kick-ass attitude will have readers applauding her no nonsense style. But Maggie also has a vulnerable side. She has big heart, one of the reasons she is determined to protect as many innocents as she can. Having lost her sister at a young age, she has dedicated her life to service, but she still longs for the dream of a home and family. She is such a great character. I enjoyed watching her develop throughout this book. She becomes more and more accessible as readers learn what shes all about. The passion she shares with Declan is all the more realistic considering her take charge attitude about life. I thought Wisdom did a remarkable job of giving readers a character who was paranormal but still had the same hopes and dreams as the rest of us.
Declan is a very sexy character. He smolders off the pages of this book, with his dark good looks and his demon swagger. At first he may come across as very laid back, someone who doesnt ruffle easy, but as the book goes on readers will find that he has spent his entire life fighting for every breathe, against a sadistic father who wants nothing more than to use him for his own gain. He is a part of a race that is considered even by paranormals to be blood thirsty and untrustworthy. So he has a lot to overcome. But he comes across as someone who will protect those he loves to the bitter end, even to the point of giving his own life. The romance between Declan and Maggie is just as passionate as these characters are. It is steamy and full of very hot moments. I thought the author did an amazing job of giving readers two paranormals that are not supposed to be together, but who are a fantastic combination.
This book has a lot of underlying ideas running through it. From the idea that certain kinds of people or in this case creatures shouldnt associate or love certain other kinds, to whether or not is possible to have the career you love and still have a home and family. Its a great urban fantasy read, with lots of attitude and action, and quite a bit of Wisdom. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next book in this new series. Wisdom continues to surprise and entertain readers with each new novel she crafts. I recommend this one to urban fantasy and paranormal romance readers. Its very steamy so keep that in mind. If you are looking for your next great paranormal read, this one should be it!
Demons are a Girls Best Friend is available NOW from your favorite bookseller.
Im giving this one 4 out of 5 apples from my book bag!
Maggie O’Malley is a centuries old witch who is part of the Hellion Guard. It is her job to police the paranormals living topside and make sure as few humans as possible are harmed in the process.
Declan is half human, half fire-demon and the new owner of Damnation Alley - the local paranormal bar that also houses a demon portal. He is determined to make the best out of the position he is in - and vows to be better than his fire-demon father.
When Declan’s sister brings a problem to the Hellion’s attention - Declan and Maggie are thrown into an intense situation that could mean the end of the world.
But no pressure.
I enjoyed Demons Are A Girls Best Friend. Ms. Wisdom has a wonderful imagination and a wicked sense of humor that comes across in her writing.
Her characters are fun and quirky and a blast to read.
I give Demons Are A Girls Best Friend 4 out of 5 stars and I’m looking forward to the next installment - Undercover Demon, due out in January 2012.
Witches, Shapeshifters, Demons, Vampires, Gnomes, Elves, an evil cult and talking jewellery. What more could you ask for.
This was a beautifully done character driven romance. The sex scenes were not too overpowering nor did they feel out of place.
In fact, there was a very quirky underscore in this romance, and that was finding not the perfect man, but one who was perfect enough with all his faults. As we see Elle, a magickal spider who wants nothing but to find a way to keep her lovers alive beyond one sex act. And Sybil, the Elf who is looking for someone who is more then just pretty.
Maggies character, is a richly written woman, whos verbal wit could match anything Joss Whedon could have put into the mouth of his blonde heroine. And just as tough. Giving Maggie a back story of loss in the form of a dead sister, was a delicate balance to give some depth to her combat ready style.
Declans character, at times leaned very much towards that of an incubus (of which the author cleverly added in the form of another relative) then the fire controlling demon he was designed to be. His back story is one that would be interesting to explore more of.
The beginning of the sub-story between Maggie and her human charge, played out as would be expected, giving her normal teenaged issues in the form of bad boyfriends and school bullies. But there were moments when the character of Courtney felt like a plot device that took on a mind of its own. I would have liked to have been given just a tad more on the characters upbringing before she joined the story.
Too often, paranormal/supernatural novels come off as stuck up, this thankfully is very casual in its approach to the topics. The characters are developed enough to be relatable, yet the subject matter is still fantastic enough to be entertaining.
We are introduced to so many characters who easily could branch off into their own novels, which might be a delightful thing to see, as I have been told this is the first book in a series. (I hope they were not teasing) Though it does lend itself to "past history" that makes me wonder if its part of a series, and not the first chapter?
It had a very Buffy meets McMillan and Wife feel. I thought this was the perfect balance between romance/dramatic and supernatural genres. The vampiric overtones (Succubus, Vampires, manipulation by the priests and the higher demons, the scene with the bullys dad at the school) that you find throughout leads me to add this book more to the vampire genre then to just a straight forward witchcraft genre. Which coming from a long time vamp fan, is a wonderful thing. I can not remember the last time I read a vamp book with that much interest.
Dont let the shirtless guy on the cover scare you away, this was a fun paranormal ride with an adult edge.
The first in a new adult fantasy series, Demons Are a Girls Best Friend introduces us to Maggie OMalley, a strong, sassy, 700 year old talented witch who works for the FBI of supernatural law enforcement, affectionately known as the Guard. Maggie is on a job when she bumps into Declan, the hot new owner of the Underground, a demon-friendly nightclub which caters to the dangerous and evil. A group of satanic Mayans are planning to raise a god from the underworld. Humans are dying. A team of highly-skilled agents has gone missing. But all of this is nothing compared to the complications that arise when a human teenage girl enters her life.
Let me start off my saying, this is not erotica. If I had seen the half-naked man on the cover before I read the pitch from Sourcebooks, I may not have accepted the book. You cant judge a book by its cover! I checked out Linda Wisdoms other titles and look at the covers of her Hex Series...cute, right?
Her new series is most definitely not for young adults, though, as certain scenes got quite steamy. I usually dont like to blush while reading, and its an exceptionally strange thing to read this book while waiting in the church parking lot for my son to get out of school, but *those* scenes were few, and Linda Wisdom has a light touch with both her love scenes and her action scenes.
Linda Wisdom dishes out lots of action, adventure, and extra helpings of humor - all the makings for a fun, sexy adult series.
While this series was out of my comfort zone, I am tempted to check out the authors Hex series, and may even pick up the next installment of Maggie OMalleys series on my own.
If you are a fan of Charlaine Harriss Sookie Stackhouse series, you should check out Linda Wisdom!
Maggie OMalley is a witch working for the Hellion Guard (a paranormal law enforcement agency). Blond and built to fight, Maggie upholds the law with great strength. She has been assigned to keep an eye on a good looking fire demon (okay, hes downright hot and sinful). He just happens to be the new owner of a club called Damnation Alley that hosts an otherworldly clientele.
Declan is a tall, dark, handsome, half human fire demon. When he meets Maggie, he sees a delicious dish that heats up his blood. Declan has to keep his temper in check or things start to blaze. He gives off an inner strength that is hard to resist. Being owner of a club that has a demon portal he has to stay tough. With the lovely Maggie he finds his human side opening up. Declan definitely wants to make this witch his in more ways than one.
Maggie and Declan end up having a very steamy affair that is impossible to extinguish. They work together in order to try and stop a Mayan ritual from taking place. It could unleash a very destructive God and end the world as they know it. Maggie has been given a charge to protect a fifteen year old female teenager full of attitude, who seems to be the center of the ritual. Can Maggie and Declan work together and play at the same time? Can Maggie cope with having a teenage charge?
What an enjoyable book! Wish I had a tasty demon named Declan in my back pocket. Linda takes us on a fun adventure with these two characters. A hot fiery affair is just the thing to warm up the blood. There is action, romance and a ton of well placed humor. I only had one problem with this book - I found the ending a bit short and to the point. I would have enjoyed just a bit more. Anyway the book is well written and punchy, fast and steamy, worth reading.
If you enjoy fun paranormals it’s a must read. I didnt want to see the end!
This is the third book, by Linda Wisdom, I’ve read. If I had to classify her writing I’d say she writes sexy humorous stories with sparkling characters, a hefty dash of danger, and a serious thread of kick ass heroine. Some of her stories are more kick ass than others and this was one of them. I’d say it was my favorite of the three I’ve bought and read.
Maggie is in law enforcement. Like her counterparts on today’s forces, she is a well trained in defense, the use of weapons, and working undercover. Maggie is also good at her job in both research and connecting the dots to bring down the bad guys. The tedious parts.
However that’s where the similarity between today’s law enforcement officers and Maggie end. She works for a secret branch of para law enforcement called The Hellion Guard. They police otherworldly creatures and keep humans and other creatures safe from bad guys. Instead of Kevlar she wears fabric enhanced with protective spells and a diamond encrusted Black Widow Spider with ruby eyes. Looks like a kick ass tat but is very much alive and part of her arsenal. Did I mention she was also a witch?
Maggie is a serious career girl, hasn’t had a date in way too long to remember, and feels she hasn’t a maternal bone in her body and doesn’t want one. She has very little trust for demons as most of them have an agenda and usually on the receiving end of her brand of justice.
Ms. Wisdom then throws her into the worse case scenario and fun begins. Maggie reluctantly becomes a godmother to one of her team member’s newbornhas to be there at the birth (eww and nausea). She’s assigned to be a loving guardian of a teenage girl (I can’t print her reaction here) who’s all mouth, attitude, and just so happens to be #1 on the list for a Mayan human sacrifice designed to free a major bad guy. And worse of all, her libido starts doing the hallelujah chorus when she meets Declan who is half demon and redefines hot sexy male and is her partner in protecting said teen. Yowza.
The only predictability in this story is good guys winning over the bad guys. How that happens leads the reader into a labyrinth of unexpected twists and turns and a very satisfying dénouement.
This is truly a fun, fun story told by a talented author who seamlessly blends paranormal, danger, humor, and love.
5 stars
Known for her Hex series, Linda Wisdom ventures into darker urban-fantasy waters that still sparkle with plenty of humor.
Maggie OMalley is a witch and a member of the Hellion Guard. The Guard has been her family since getting kicked out of the Witches Academy eons ago. Its mission is to stay under the radar and protect both paranormal beings and humans, which can get a little messy if you are pursuing a being which can explode at will.
Declan is a half-demon with the gift of fire. He fought and earned the right to own and manage Damnation Ally, the club built right on top of a gate to and from the underworld. A nice guy, he literally went through hell while being raised by his nasty demon dad. At last he is in a position to control his own destiny, and help those who have become dear to him. He is not pleased when the clubs new décor is covered with Bloater goo. Although the witch who tackled it is very intriguing, even while covered in slime.
A rebellious throw-away teen is the focus of a group whose goal is summoning an ancient evil to destroy the earth. Yes, shes a pain in the ass, but she does not deserve being used as a human sacrifice. Its up to the Hellion Guard to keep the Mayan cults dreams from coming true.
DEMONS ARE A GIRLS BEST FRIEND has plenty of romance and passion woven through a well-built and fascinating world. Declan is hot, Maggie is willing and things get complicated in the best sort of way.
Linda Wisdom has the gift of creating strong paranormal characters with a concrete sense of reality and plenty of interest to build upon in future installments. She also has a knack for crafting laugh-out-loud funny scenes and dialogue. Reading any of her books is a delightful escape from the hum-drum daily grind.

Fireworks explode in this passionate novel by the inventive Wisdom, who incorporates a veritable potpourri of paranormal characters into this fast-paced tale. Humor, danger and steamy sex make for an exciting read. Maggie and Declan burn up the pages.
Although she is a premier enforcement officer for the paranormal Hellion Guard, feisty witch Maggie O’Malley is not equipped to babysit a recalcitrant teenager targeted as a sacrifice by some fanatical Mayans.
Maggie almost destroyed his underground club singlehandedly, but half- fire demon Declan isn’t one to hold a grudge, especially after he discovers they’re fighting the same battle. Initially Declan’s concerned with salvaging the club he’s worked so hard to build; he’s more accountant than demon. But when his sister becomes a target he jumps in with both feet. Teen Courtney proves to be a handful as she constantly gets into trouble, further endangering her life. Maggie and Declan begin a sizzling affair that almost gets in the way of their mission. The two are drawn together by dreams and visions, allowing them to express their mutual interest even as they distrust each other in the real world.
