You should feel sorry for my parents. Why? Because I’ve been an insomniac basically since early childhood – and let me tell you, having a screaming, wide awake four year old running around at all hours of the day and night– well, let’s just say my parents should probably be on the fast track to sainthood.  They finally made a deal with me: I could stay up as late as I wanted, BUT I had to stay in bed. That was cool with me, because it gave me an opportunity to do the thing I love the most – read. And you know what’s even cooler? Being at a place like Sourcebooks where it’s basically my job to read and talk about how much I love books. Guess we don’t really change all that much when we grow up. But don’t worry – I don’t do the screaming and crying thing anymore – totally over that.

  • Infomercial item you’d consider buying: Um, already bought it – anyone remember TopsyTail?
  • What did you want to grow up to be when you were younger? Rainbow Brite. Still working on that.
  • What was the greatest song ever written? Valerie by the Zutons. It’s about a girl named Valerie who has ginger hair. So obviously written about me.

Katie

Katie Anderson
I've been spoiled by books since I was a teeny, tiny baby (one of the many perks of growing up in my family's independent bookstore, Anderson's, only a few miles away from us here at Sourcebooks). It might not have been as cool as growing up in a chocolate factory, but then again, people don't mysteriously disappear mid-tour—no offense, Charlie. I've always been a fiction girl at heart and LOVE talking books with anyone who will listen.

  • Favorite Sourcebooks memory: My department through me a Bon Voyage Party when I had to move to a new desk about 10 yards away  (beverages were included J).
  • The book you’d take if you were going to be deserted on an island: Pillars of the Earth…It’s the best book I’ve ever read…and hopefully by the time I finish it…I’ll be rescued.
  • Favorite childhood toy: Polly Pocket!! I still wish I could be her.

Aubrey Mad Hatter

I have always been an avid reader, and I was lucky enough to have a mom who would load all of her daycare kids into the van to drive me down to the local library. I was so happy when I turned 16 and could drive myself. There was only one problem: despite living in a tiny town, I didn’t know how to get anywhere! Every time I got in a car my nose was in a book. I don’t know how we used to survive without Google maps.

  • The book you’d take if you were going to be deserted on an island: The Lord of the Rings trilogy or Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle (and yes, I know I’m cheating)
  • What was the greatest song ever written? “Aubrey” by Bread (for obvious reasons)

I started my publishing career at age four at my local library, where I insisted on “helping organize” the children’s section…by color.  Strangely enough, those same librarians gave me a part-time job twelve years later.  I now edit young adult fiction for the Fire imprint and adult romance for Casablanca—because I still can’t resist a happily-ever-after ending.

  • Perverse pleasure: being a Red Sox fan in New York City
  • First book you read on your own: Are You My Mother?  Apparently I also enjoyed acting it out with strangers
  • Favorite Sourcebooks memory: dinner with Kristi Yamaguchi  on her tour for It’s a Big World Little Pig
