Any message to your readers?
Seventh grade and being a teen is tough - I won't sugar coat it. But, the best advice that I can offer you is to stay true to yourself, find your passions and you'll be so happy. Yes, it may seem like being in with the popular crew will make your life but if it forsakes you following your heart and exploring your dreams than I promise it's NOT worth it. So ask yourself what puts a smile on your face every morning when you look in the mirror and do at least one thing a day that will keep you grinning from ear to ear.
What is your book about? Please provide a description.
Doggy Divas is revolves around three very different girls in the 7th grade at Monroe Middle School that come together to form a dog walking/dog grooming club after all the dog walker's in their town go on strike. The dogs they care for provide commentary at the end of each chapter for extra "inside scoop." The main charactera are Roxy Davis . . . shunned by the popular group, she is the brains behind Doggy Divas. Georgia Sweeny - an ace knitter who says whatever comes to her mind which has made it a problem for her to fit in at school. And Kim Pierce, a dog obsessed girl who connects with 4-legged creatures better than people. When the dog walkers go on strike and the school is topsy turvy due to "Bring Your Dog to School Day" - they form an unlikely bond to form "Doggy Divas" despite the odds.
How long have you been at work on this book?
Since the summer of 2009.
How did the idea originate?
Source Books brought the general idea for the series to me but I used my LOVE for YA series such as The Baby-Sitters Club and Sweet Valley High when I was growing up as inspiration to develop the plot and invent the characters and their back stories. Think this is a good place to mention that as early as the 4th grade, I used to write "bonus" chapters for my Sweet Valley High books once I was finished reading them. There were many reasons for this . . .one, I wanted to write and this was a great way to get that passion fueled. Two, I was incredibly impatient and read super fast so I couldn't wait for the next book in the series to be released. And three, I guess I was controlling even then and wanted to have a say with what happened to my favorite characters!
Did the book entail any unusual writing habits or places?
Actually, yes . . . I escaped to the music I believe that my readers listen to, making playlists that included Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears and the Black Eye Peas. I also LOVE finding "writing spots" that I think have great energy. Brooklyn Public - a fab bar/restaurant in Ft. Greene Brooklyn was a fave - as well as escaping overnight to the Hyatt in Greenwich, CT because I LOVE their indoor/outdoor lobby to write while devouring their amazing french onion soup.
