Publishers Weekly reviewed two November releases: The Forever Queen by Helen Hollick (ISBN 9781402240683) and Dating Mr. December by Phillipa Ashley (ISBN 9781402241420).

The Forever Queen
Helen Hollick, Sourcebooks Landmark, $16.99 trade paper (656p) ISBN 978-1-4022-4068-3
Hollick gets medieval in this excellent historical. As a young teenager, Emma of Normandy is married off to Aethelred of England to secure an alliance in 1002 C.E., and though initially frightened of her crude and violent husband, she soon learns that his bluster is a cover for his weakness and cowardice. When Aethelred dies, his throne is taken by a Viking usurper, Cnut, who claims Emma along with the crown. In him, Emma finds a love that she doesn't expect, but constant political treachery threatens their marriage, their lives, and the inheritance of their children. Hollick does a remarkable job of bringing to life a little known but powerful queen, as well as the milieu and world she inhabited. The scope is vast and the cast is huge, but Hollick remains firmly in control, giving readers an absorbing plot that never lags over the course of a fat, satisfying book. (Nov.)

Dating Mr. December
Phillipa Ashley, Sourcebooks Landmark, $9.99 trade paper (304p) ISBN 978-1-4022-4142-0
British author Ashley infuses her debut (first published in the U.K. in 2006, and the inspiration for Lifetime TV's 2009 movie 12 Men of Christmas) with humor that somewhat offsets the formulaic tale of a woman retreating from urban life after being betrayed by her boyfriend and her boss. In England's Lake District, PR executive Emma Tremayne tries to help a local mountain rescue group stay solvent by creating a nude calendar featuring the rescuers. Will Tennant is the most reluctant model, and the most attractive. Emma needs him to agree to pose as Mr. December for the sake of the fund-raiser--and to show she can handle her new job. Emma and Will are clearly destined for each other, so their relationship and inevitable obstacles lack suspense, but readers will enjoy the breezy style and repartee. (Nov.)

Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman by Francesca Simon received a great review by Terri Schlichenmeyer, whose column is syndicated to mid-sized newspapers across the country.

"What's great about Horrid Henry is that he's the kid deep within us all. He's rather like the "invisible friend" that provokes bad actions and catches all the blame."

The Pox and the Covenant by Tony Williams was reviwed in the New York Journal of Books.

http://www.nyjournalofbooks.com/2010/08/pox-and-covenant-mather-franklin-and.html

"The Pox and the Covenant is a well-written, informative read. Readers interested in colonial American history or the history of science more generally will find much to enjoy. It is also readable and approachable enough to make an excellent choice for upper-level high school or college history classes. It will serve as a launching place for those interested in exploring the nature of illness and medical science in the period, but also stands on its own as an engaging treatment of this chapter in American history."

STARRED REVIEW: One Fine Cowboy.
Kennedy, Joanne (Author)
Sep 2010. 416 p. Sourcebooks/Casablanca, paperback, $6.99. (9781402236709).
When graduate student Charlie Banks is assigned research on horse whisperers, her PETA-inspired belief that riding a horse is tantamount to animal cruelty threatens to affect the objectivity of her study. Still, given no choice by her supervisor, Charlie heads for Latigo Ranch in Wyoming. A dyed-in-the-wool New Jersey girl, she finds nothing to like about the wide-open spaces of the Equality State, especially because the actual ranch bears little or no resemblance to the picture-perfect paradise in the brochure. The last thing rancher Nate Shawcross wants at Latigo is a meddling woman, and an uninvited one, at that. Burned by his former girlfriend, Nate is happy with his horses, the only living things he can trust. After an initial altercation, Charlie is set to leave, but her car breaks down, and there's nothing she can do but wait until the parts arrive. A stubborn city girl meets a stubborn rancher in this novel about how opposites, even those with preconceived notions about each other, attract. Kennedy (Cowboy Trouble, 2010) has written an entertaining and humorous romance.
