Publishers Weekly gave The Food, Folklore and Art of Lowcountry Cooking (9781402230981) by Joseph Dabney a great review in this week's web exclusives!

http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/457064-Web_Exclusive_Reviews_4_26_2010.php

The Food, Folklore and Art of Low Country Cooking: A Celebration of the Foods, History, and Romance Handed Down from England, the Caribbean, France, Germany, and Scotland
Joseph Dabney. Cumberland, $29.99 (400p) ISBN 9781402230981
Even a dyed-in-the-wool Yankee will feel like a local after conquering Dabney's voluminous follow-up to his James Beard-winning Appalachian cookbook Smokehouse Ham, Spoon Bread and Scuppernong Wine. Digging deep, Dabney explores the culinary traditions and folklore of the coastal plain that runs from South Carolina into Georgia, from colonization to today. Tracing the lineage of the iconic dishes like Frogmore Stew and She Crab Soup, Dabney combines research and first-person interviews to create a rich portrait of the land and people. Quick to laud the contributions of slaves for many of the region's favorite dishes and key ingredients (like okra and peanuts), not to mention plenty of local characters, Dabney immerses culinary carpetbaggers via guided tours of cities like Savannah and Charleston, including a helpful guide to Charleston dialect ("Minuet: You and I have dined"). Though the book's scope may intimidate some-recipes and key dishes are woven into the text rather than set apart-diners who want to eat like a Low Country local will find plenty of suggestions here for crab cakes, sweet tea, pimento cheese, oyster roasts, hoppin' John, pig roasts, and fried chicken, along with plenty of sides and accompaniments. Rumor Has It by Jill Mansell (ISBN 9781402237508) has been chosen as "Mother's Day Possibility" in today's Shelf Awareness Newsletter! You can see the full issue archived online here http://news.shelf-awareness.com/mv/a1/872369.html, but the great review from Marilyn Dahl is below:

Rumor Has It by Jill Mansell (Sourcebooks Landmark, $14 trade paper, 9781402237508/1402237502, May 2010)

Tilly Cole's boyfriend has just moved out of their London flat, and while she's relieved to see him go (he was kind of boring and had failed to mention his bell-ringing club), she doesn't know how she'll pay the rent by herself. Visiting her best friend in the country, she sees an ad in the local paper for a girl Friday and impulsively applies for the job. Of course, she gets it, and moves into a swell house owned by a gay interior designer and his 13-year-old daughter. Of course, the designer has a best friend, Jack, who is not only darkly gorgeous, but has a tragic past and a Lothariol presence. Of course, Tilly is warned to stay away from the irresistible Jack. Rumor Has It is filled with the charms of small-town Roxborough, where the worst things to happen involve cows getting stuck in gratings and the dangers of overhanging tree branches, and with delightful characters: the soon-to-be ex-wife, Stella (" 'Thirty-seven. I know I don't look it, but I am.' Stella was alarmingly modest too."); the best friend, Erin, who has a secret; Stella's estranged husband, Fergus, who is the secret; Max the interior decorator and his daughter, Lou; and Tilly and Jack, fighting their mutual attraction. We know where this will end up, but the journey to the happy ending is well worth taking.
