Production Editor – Children’s and Young Adult Titles

Sourcebooks is seeking an outstanding individual to join our Content Delivery department as a production editor, working on our rapidly growing children’s and young adult imprints. The ideal candidate for this job would have at least 2 years related experience in book or newspaper publishing, a strong attention to details, and have a passion for managing processes and schedules.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage schedules defined by director of production
  • Develop and manage processes and schedules for digital initiatives as needed
  • Manage workflow of print and ebooks through the development process, hitting all scheduled benchmark dates or projecting new benchmarks as needed and alerting all team members to any delays

The Editorial Assistant will support all editorial aspects of book publishing for the Connecticut office and Casablanca imprint of the New York office, including: processing and evaluating submissions, market research, writing and editing sales materials, drafting back cover copy and other marketing material, light developmental and line editing, drafting, copyediting and proofreading catalog pages, and administrative duties. This position reports to the Senior Content Editor for Sourcebooks’ Casablanca fiction imprint.

This growth position allows the employee to learn the acquisition and development process, sharpen organization and process management skills, and work with remarkable authors while supporting various department functions, acquiring editors, and book and product lines.

Responsibilities include:

  • Acquisitions
    • Help to process and review manuscript submissions and prepare Reader Reports.

Responsibilities include:

  • Own product creation, development and planning for strategically driven projects that are in close connection to what our consumers and our retailers want and need

  • Research prepublication projects and category competitive sets for sales, positioning, price package, etc.
  • Serve as product champion; relentlessly pursue the unique positioning of new product in the marketplace with respect to content, category, positioning, title, subtitle, physical packaging, design packaging, marketing copy, etc.
  • Write captivating back cover, flap copy and packaging copy for publication
  • Manage all aspects of author relations

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Code custom applications using PHP for ecommerce platform and Joomla websites

This opportunity may require some on-site work throughout the year, but can also be handled remotely after training is completed. Tasks would include but are not limited to page production and corrections and ebook development and design.

Qualifications:

  • Must be technically savvy and thoroughly proficient using the Macintosh OSX platform; proficient in InDesign CS5 or higher, Illustrator, Photoshop and various Adobe software a must.
  • Set up master pages, style sheets, colors, etc. in InDesign
  • Produce book internals and templates using styles
  • Flow in digital text from editorial, correctly format all internal elements; prepare pages for intermediate proofing and final digital files for print vendor
  • Thorough understanding of file types and their attributes (EPS, INDD, PSD, TIF, JPEG and so on)
