Accounting Associate

Sourcebooks is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented individual to join a leading independent book publisher located in the western suburbs of Chicago as an Accounting Associate. The Accounting Associate will be responsible for:

  • Entering vouchers from our eCommerce sites

Royalty Associate

Sourcebooks prides itself on developing relationships with its authors/agents and working with them to create the best possible publishing experience.  This includes providing excellent feedback and reporting on the financial performance of each author’s work(s) in the form of timely, accurate royalty statements; friendly and courteous responses to author/agent questions about their royalties; and knowledgeable guidance/education on the process for calculating and paying royalties.  As part of the royalty accounting team, this position presents opportunities to strengthen the publisher/author bond while maintaining the financial viability of the company.
Royalty Accounting

  • Maintaining royalty contract files, filing periodic royalty statements
  • Researching royalty contract questions
  • Entering new author and product records in SAP and Acumen
  • Monitoring print decisions report, warehouse report, launch data and following up on missing or incomplete contracts prior to publication
  • Entering advance payments from Accounting and Advance Request Forms
  • Preparing Excel reports from Acumen transaction data for analysis and royalty reporting
  • Entering royalty contract information in royalty reporting system, processing contract amendments, and adjusting royalty earnings as necessary
  • Reviewing periodic royalty statements for reserve calculations/adjustments prior to payment
  • Preparing custom royalty statements using Acumen, SAP and Excel for a select group of licensed product contracts
  • Handling author/agent questions and calls regarding royalty contracts, statements and payments
  • Completing 1042 tax records in filemaker/maintaining 1042 database; printing annual 1042 reports, 1042 forms and distributing to foreign authors/entities

Other

  • Booking all travel and tours for authors based upon requests from internal Sourcebooks staff (Marketing, Publicity, Editorial)
  • Distributing detailed itineraries to all parties, making adjustments to itineraries as needed, providing back up to Accounts Payable for credit card travel charges

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting and/or strong accounting experience
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Excel (vlookup required) and ability to easily create, format, and manipulate spreadsheet data according to predefined criteria
  • Experience with reading, analyzing, and/or interpreting legal contracts OR experience reading, accurately interpreting and implementing other technical documents.

Content Delivery

Production Services Coordinator

Sourcebooks, a leading, innovative, independent book publisher in the western suburbs of Chicago seeks an individual to join our Content Delivery department as Production Services Coordinator. We are a rapidly growing company with a wide range of great books and energetic and creative employees. The ideal candidate will have expertise in client relationship management and product delivery and be a constant liaison with Content Delivery team and suppliers on all matters relating to print and reprint management services. The primary focus of this role is to deliver exceptional printed books and ancillary product for Sourcebooks and its authors – ensuring adherence by all involved to specified deadlines and budgets, negotiating with and selecting the most appropriate vendor, and ensuring timely delivery from both internal and external resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Foster a strong, highly collaborative working relationships with team members, internal staff and external resources

Graphic Designer – Book Covers

Sourcebooks, Inc., a leading independent book publisher located in the western suburbs of Chicago, seeks an outstanding individual to join our design department as a production designer for our book covers. We are looking for a strong leader with a desire to provide innovative design ideas and bring our exciting titles to final production. This position requires 2-5 years’ experience working in an art, graphics, or production field in some capacity, as well as strong working knowledge of the Creative Suite programs and how to use them to their fullest potential. Experience in art directing and designing for both print and digital output a strong plus.

Design/Technical skills:

  • Route ARC and final production covers of assigned titles through the approval process.
  • Prepare accurate final printer files for production
  • Working with approved cover design, establish production enhancements and treatments and prepare spot files accordingly.
  • Demonstrate strong typography skills
  • Understand printing industry in all areas—specifically 1/C through 4/C process, spot color, coatings for covers, paper knowledge, etc.

We are seeking a dynamic, author-focused, forward-thinking acquisitions and development editor to join our children’s imprint as an editor. We seek an editor with acquisitions experience and interest across the children’s book spectrum, from board and picture book through middle grade, with a specific initiative to launch and build our children’s nonfiction list, including activity and licensed books. The editor will have direct responsibility for acquiring and developing the Sourcebooks Jabberwocky imprint list, including list management, communication, and all acquisitions and development functions.

Responsibilities include:

  • With Editorial Director, responsible for long-range planning and list management of Sourcebooks Jabberwocky
  • Working with authors, agents, licensors, and other parties, identify and solicit manuscripts for publication in children’s book categories, including a strong focus on developing children’s nonfiction categories

Sourcebooks, Inc., a leading independent book publisher located in the western suburbs of Chicago, is currently seeking local freelance talent to support our production department. This opportunity may require some on-site work throughout the year, but can also be handled remotely after training is completed. Tasks would include but are not limited to page production and corrections and ebook development and design.

Qualifications:

  • Must be technically savvy and thoroughly proficient using the Macintosh OSX platform; proficient in InDesign CS5 or higher, Illustrator, Photoshop and various Adobe software a must.
  • Set up master pages, style sheets, colors, etc. in InDesign
  • Produce book internals and templates using styles
  • Flow in digital text from editorial, correctly format all internal elements; prepare pages for intermediate proofing and final digital files for print vendor
  • Thorough understanding of file types and their attributes (EPS, INDD, PSD, TIF, JPEG and so on)
  • Familiarity with ebooks a plus, specifically epub2 or epub3, iBooks author also a plus

Key Features / Deliverables for titles are:

  • Cover conception requires a minimum of three distinct covers.
