PW BEST BOOKS 2011

ROMANCE (on page 2 of the Best Book article)

The Secret Mistress
Mary Balogh (Delacorte)
This delectable Regency reminds readers why Balogh is one of the foremost romance novelists of our time. An adorable pairing of a breathless, insecure debutante and a noble but nerdy earl is elevated by well-drawn secondary characters and abundant, colorful period details.

No Proper Lady
Isabel Cooper (Sourcebooks Casablanca)
A warrior from the future travels to Victorian England, where she falls in love with a magician who can help her destroy the demons that plague her dystopian time. Cooper’s synergy of science fiction and historical romance could—and, we hope, will—spawn an entire new subgenre.

Scandalous Desires:
A Maiden Lane Novel
Elizabeth Hoyt (Grand Central)
In Hoyt’s third novel of passion and drama in the 18th-century London slums, a widow who runs a foundling home helps a notorious pirate rediscover his ability to love. Historical accuracy, including an unflinching look at poverty and politics, sets this series well above its fellows.

Angel’s Rest:
An Eternity Springs Novel
Emily March (Ballantine)
March (a pseudonym for Geralyn Dawson) breathes new life into the contemporary cozy romance with this sweet but never cloying tale, set in a small town where romance is bolstered by true friendship and community.

Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star
Heather Lynn Rigaud (Sourcebooks Landmark)
Rigaud’s entertaining fan fiction for Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice deserves its promotion to paperback. Austen fans looking for something new will thrill to see familiar characters in a modern setting with a pounding backbeat and electrified vibe.

Publishers Weekly gave Dreaming of Mr. Darcy by Victoria Connelly a great review, calling it “good, clean romantic fun” and saying, “…hilarity ensues. Connelly generously sprinkles both Austen and Shakespeare throughout this diverting tale, proving all’s well that ends well.”

A very nice review for the second in Connelly’s trilogy!

Dreaming of Mr. Darcy

Victoria Connelly. Sourcebooks Landmark, $14.99 trade paper (368p) ISBN 978-1-4022-5135-1

It’s all good, clean romantic fun as Connelly (A Weekend with Mr. Darcy) indulges in a second Austen-packed tale of love bouncing off in all the wrong directions. After receiving an unexpected windfall, 31-year-old Kay Ashton boldly decides to start anew. She’s always dreamed of living in a locale dripping with Regency-era lore, so she buys a rundown B&B in Lyme Regis. Kay has barely settled into the partially rehabbed seaside home when the producers of a film adaptation of Austen’s Persuasion show up and book every available room. Kay swoons for dashing Oli Wade Owen, who plays Capt. Wentworth; screenwriter Adam Craig swoons for Kay; Kay tries to play matchmaker for Adam; hilarity ensues. Connelly generously sprinkles both Austen and Shakespeare throughout this diverting tale, proving all’s well that ends well. (Jan.)

HOT ZONE (ISBN 9781402244988)
by Catherine Mann
Genre: Romantic Suspense, General Romantic Suspense
Sensuality: HOT
4 Stars: RT Rating

REVIEW: Mann’s latest novel is fast paced and filled with intriguing characters. The main characters are complex and perfectly matched in terms of their past experiences and losses. The supporting characters create an additional layer of interest to draw the reader in further. Even the villain boasts a sympathetic side that reflects the motivating factors behind her illegal actions. The many twists in this story keep the tension running high right to the last page.

Pararescueman Hugh Franco rescues Amelia Bailey and her newly adopted nephew from a collapsed building after an earthquake strikes a Bahamian city. Amelia, a lawyer, has been helping her brother and sister-in-law with their adoption. Separated from the couple in the chaos, Amelia is caring for the boy in a makeshift hospital when he is kidnapped. Hugh comes to their rescue a second time, and soon they find themselves in the midst of a human trafficking ring. (SOURCEBOOKS, Dec., 352 pp., $6.99)

WILD THING (ISBN 9781402257278)
by Robin Kaye
Genre: Contemporary Romance, General Contemporary Romance
Sensuality: HOT
3 Stars: RT Rating

REVIEW: For those who have read other Kaye books, a few characters and backstories will be familiar. Although the humor is forced at times and the love story moves from 0 to 60, which may give readers whiplash, the story of the mountain man and the city girl who loves him is an enjoyable ride.

Wilderness guide Hunter Kincaid and his siblings are escorting a group of models through the mountains of Idaho. But it’s not the models that catch Hunter’s eye, it’s the agency manager, Toni Russo. She’s a city girl with a serious phobia of anything natural, from the woods to the mountains. With Hunter’s patience and help, she begins to see the beauty in the wildness of the country and the advantages of loving a mountain man. It’s a case of opposites attract, but they may not be as different as they imagine. They both work with at-risk youth, would kill for a good cup of coffee and, most importantly, fell in love at first sight. (SOURCEBOOKS, Dec., 384 pp., $7.99)

DREAMING OF THE WOLF (ISBN 9781402245558)
by Terry Spear
Genre: Paranormal/Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance
Sensuality: HOT
4 Stars: RT Rating

REVIEW: In the eighth in her Werewolf series, Spear gives us a love-at-first-sight romance with intense and almost immediate lovemaking that really works with her fascinating characters and exciting action-packed crime drama plot. A great fantasy twist and yet another way to interpret the legend of weres.

Sub pack leader Jake Sliver is in Breckenridge, Colo., to drop off of his photography at a gallery when he catches sight of a woman staking out two deadly criminal types. She more than intrigues him, she turns him on.
Alicia Greiston is a bounty hunter, only this hunt is personal. She’s after the mob men who had her mother killed. She’s also attracted the interest of a certain Jake Silver, who offers her his protection, which pleases her as she’s used to taking care of herself. She and Jake enter into a torrid affair which proves to be impossible to escape from, but they’re also on a crash course with disaster in the form of the mob. If they survive, will the feelings they have for each other survive too? (SOURCEBOOKS, Dec., 384 pp., $7.99)

DEMONS LIKE IT HOT (ISBN 9781402251771)
by Sidney Ayers
Genre: Paranormal/Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance
Sensuality: HOT
3 Stars: RT Rating

REVIEW: The latest book in Ayers’ Demons Unleashed series has a slow-paced plot, which may confuse new readers. However, the witty dialogue between the characters more than makes up for it. Readers will love the hilarious repartee between Serah and just about everyone.

Serah SanGermano is a caterer at the top of her game. But lately Serah’s been hiding the pesky supernatural abilities she’s begun developing since her Nonni died. With an upcoming audition for a reality show, American Chef, Serah doesn’t need any more complications.

Enter Matthias Ambrose, demon mercenary. Matthias was hired by Serah’s friend Lucy to act as Serah’s bodyguard. With hunky Matthias as Serah’s constant companion, sparks fly and romance is on the menu. Matthias and Serah are soon in love as they fight to save humanity! (SOURCEBOOKS, Dec., 416 pp., $6.99)

HOW TO WORSHIP A GODDESS (ISBN 9781402251504)
by Stephanie Julian
Genre: Paranormal/Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance
Sensuality: SCORCHER
4 1/2 Stars: RT Rating

REVIEW: The Forgotten Goddesses series continues with this stellar entry by Julian, who blends terrific sex with tender romance. Liberally laced with humor and filled with intriguing characters, her story is full of twists, turns and surprising conclusions.

Lucy Aster, or Lusna the Etruscan Goddess of the Moon, goes to every Railers hockey game to watch Brandon Stevenson. He gives her feelings she hasn’t had in her lifetime — and two millennia seems like forever. Brand’s had his eyes on the beauty in the stands for two years and finally decides to track her down. CARRIE GOES OFF THE MAP (ISBN 9781402241451)
by Phillipa Ashley
Genre: Mainstream, General Mainstream Fiction
3 Stars: RT Rating

REVIEW: Quirky and fun, Carrie Goes Off the Map is a pleasant mix of beach read and Brit chick lit. Carrie is a true-to-life, volatile woman taken firmly out of her comfort zone by the whims of fate, bad boyfriends and circumstance. Matt, Carrie’s love interest, is an appealing and realistic male lead, whose eyes will smolder even for the reader. The sex is mild though descriptively blunt in the way of the modern generation’s attitudes. Overall a diverting read, though not world-changing.

Carrie’s fiancé returned from his stag night stumblingly drunk — and dumped her. The reasons behind the abrupt end of their relationship were many, though Carrie knew none of them herself. In an effort to forget the heartbreak she’s been subjected to, Carrie and her girlfriend Rowena plan a cross-country trip in a VW camper, but the adventures Carrie experiences are far from what she expects. CATCHING JORDAN (ISBN 9781402262272)
by Miranda Kenneally
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary Young Adult
4 Stars: RT Rating

REVIEW: If there’s one thing to be noted about Catching Jordan, it’s that Kenneally makes football accessible — and even enjoyable — for those who might not ordinarily follow the sport. Her protagonist is a strong-willed female quarterback who’s determined to continue playing during college. Jordan (or “Woods,” as her teammates call her) is a fearless captain and the teamwork and camaraderie that’s so implicit in the story are great takeaways for readers of any age.

Jordan has been one of the boys for as long as she can remember. Captain of her all-male football team, she’s a respected quarterback who’s earned the admiration and loyalty of her teammates. Determined to get a full scholarship to play college football, her attention is solely focused on playing well for recruiters.

When Ty Green joins the team as an alternate quarterback, Jordan is thrown. Not only is she threatened by his talent but she can’t deny the connection she has with the new kid in town. Suddenly her focus begins to waver. What — and who — does she really want in her life? (SOURCEBOOKS, Dec., 288 pp., $8.99, ISBN: 9781402262272, PB, 12 & Up)

Brown, Carolyn. Darn Good Cowboy Christmas. Sourcebooks Casablanca. Oct. 2011. c.384p. ISBN 9781402261572, pap. $7.99. Contemporary.

While her carny talents and free-spirited upbringing make for some interesting moments and the carnival lure still draws her in, Lizelle finds no match for the irresistible passion that sizzles between herself and Raylen.
VERDICT Sassy and quirky and peopled with an abundance of engaging characters, this fast-paced holiday romp brims with music, laughter, intriguing carnival detail, and plenty of Texas flavor. A classic battle between “wings and roots” that is sure to please Brown’s growing Western fan base. Brown (Red’s Hot Cowboy) lives in Oklahoma, but has a soft spot for Texas.

Passion soon flares, but it isn’t until Sophie’s three brothers finally arrive that they sort things out and set things to rights. But then life just becomes more complicated.
VERDICT Supremely sexy, emotionally involving, and graced with well-written dialog, this gently paced, baby-centered story is a fascinating, enjoyable read and nicely connects with the author’s earlier books (The Heir, The Soldier). Burrowes lives in rural Maryland.

Sarah Wendell, author of Everything I Know About Love I Learned from Romance Novels (ISBN 9781402254499), is featured in a great USA Today Q&A in today’s newspaper and online. Below is the full Q&A, along with a rundown of the media that has run thus far for Sarah and her book.

The print edition of USA Today has a circulation of 1.82 million, and USAToday.com receives 14.1 million unique visitors a month!

Better than sex: Romance Novels Offer Lessons in Love, Courtship

Think romance novels still feature timid virgins and bodice-ripping alpha males? So last century, says Sarah Wendell, co-founder of popular romance review blog smartbitchestrashybooks.com. She is also the author of Everything I Know About Love, I Learned From Romance Novels (Sourcebooks, $14.99). She spoke with USA TODAY.

Q: What can escapist fiction teach us about finding real-life love?

A: Romances communicate that women should be the heroines of their own lives and that happy endings take work — there is no easy way to happiness. It doesn't just show up. Romances teach that you are lovable and worthy of a happiness exactly the way you are and shouldn't have to change drastically to please someone else.

Q: But don't women read romances because they don't have a boyfriend or husband?

A: That's the rumor, alas. But it's untrue. The Romance Writers of America surveys of their readership show that romance readers are not only educated and successful women from every possible background, but that many of us are in happy long-term relationships. (Wendell, 36, is married and has two children.)

Q: Aren't romances just porn in print form for women?

A: Much of the coverage of romance novels focuses on the idea that they're all about sex. They're not. They're about courtship! More importantly, some are very explicit, and some contain a few kisses and some incredible emotional intimacy. But there are not many venues in which women can safely explore their own sexuality without judgment. Having the freedom to explore private thoughts in the space of a genre that celebrates female sexuality is unique, because there aren't many safe spaces like that.

Q: Why do you write non-fiction when you could make millions cranking out romance novels? They're all the same, aren't they?

A: People think you can roll over and sneeze out a romance. I have tried to write fiction, so I understand what an amazing and powerful achievement a great romance novel is. …

Romance novels are about courtship and a happy ending. If you ask a couple, "How did you meet?" no two stories are the same. It's the same with romance novels. I've been reading romance since high school, and it never gets old.

Q: Dukes, billionaires, pirates — how can a mere mortal man compete with these fictional superstuds?

A: Romance readers do not expect real men to be carbon copies of romance heroes — we don't expect anyone to ride in on a horse wielding a sword and solving all our problems. Romance heroes are found in real moments of caring. When my husband makes my coffee for me in the morning and puts a piece of foil over the top so it stays warm for me, that's a romance hero moment.

Q: Why do people mock romances?

A: Nora Roberts said it best when she pointed out that romances are "a hat trick of easy targets: They contain emotions, relationships and sex." True that.
