We once posed a challenging question to our co-workers. “Tell us what you believe,” we said, “What’s your purpose? What’s your cause? Why do we do what we do?” What we got back was inspiration from all corners of the company about the power of reading, the impact of authorship, and an affirmation that as much as the world changes around us, at least one thing remains constant – books change lives.

“We believe in life changing moments. A moment that will inspire, change, and create opportunities that could alter someone’s life forever.” –Nick

“Impact. I truly believe that I have an impact on shaping children’s thoughts and imaginations through the books that Sourcebooks provides for them.” - Rebecca

“To give people experiences they didn’t know they wanted to happen…and watch them share it with others.” - Danielle

“To bring the joy of reading to everyone, anywhere, anytime.” - Marie

“Because everything we do is purposefully created to make the world a better place.” - Paul

“I believe in sharing great books with people who otherwise couldn’t read them, or wouldn’t even know about them. I believe in being able to see yourself in a book and knowing that without you, it wouldn’t be quite the same.” - Gina

“To give parents and children and friends moments to remember in their lives forever.” - Kelly

“I get to help bring to life the words I love in a company that inspires the love of words in others.” - Sarah

“Because I believe in the transformative power of stories. Because I know that books can not only change but even save lives.” - Lara

“I believe in the independent spirit, in feeling as though my contributions matter, knowing that nothing is business as usual and that there is no such thing as a ‘rut.’” -Leah

“Because people with ideas need support in reaching those who need solutions. Because visions need loudspeakers.” - Deb

“To innovate. To bridge the gap between the print world and the digital world.” - Adrian

“Books are the most important tools of our culture. They enable us to become the best people we can be and create a better world for everyone. They enrich us in a way that nothing else and no other experience can.” - Sean

“To progress the fundamental human passion for stories and information across cultures & technology.” - Nick

“Because the first time I walked in the door I felt the energy.” - Sharon

“Every book as a soul, if you will. There is a reason and a purpose for it to exist and all of the energy and lifesource of each of us is in it.” - Heidi

“Books are magical, imaginative and inspiring. I want people to feel that!” - Jessica

“We have a vision still while others only get by. We are optimistic about our future. Everyone wants to be a part of that!” - Susan

“To give people the experience they are searching for.”- Liz

Editorial Director, Nonfiction, Sourcebooks Jabberwocky

What I'm looking for:
New twists on old standards for every age group from board book through YA with topics such as coding, art, cooking, jokes, building/making, performing, biography, history, science, technology, math, holiday traditions, nature, and memoir

Right now, please don't send me...
Books about kids, but really for adults

How I got into books:
I loved books so much as a kid that I got special permission from my school principal to enter the building early so I could help shelve books in the library. Years later, I thought my love of books meant I had to teach, so I went to college to be a high school English teacher. When I was about 90% done with my teaching degree, and just before I started student teaching (but not before I created lesson plans using Grandmaster Flash lyrics), I heard about an internship at an indie publishing company in Naperville called Sourcebooks. Oh. I can make books? And I can still live in Chicagoland? Yes, let’s do that.

Just a few of the books and authors I’ve acquired and edited in the past five years:
Grumpy Pants by Claire Messer, The Cow Who Climbed a Tree by Gemma Merino, Biggie by Derek E. Sullivan, The Curious Cat Spy Club series by Linda Joy Singleton, the Chloe Zoe series by Jane Smith, and the Welcome to Bermooda series by Mike Litwin

Some favorite books and authors I didn't publish:
Leo: A Ghost Story, Please Mr. Panda, anything by Gyo Fujikawa or P.D. Eastman, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Color Purple, My Life in France, The Monster at the End of This Book, The Ernie and Bert Book, and the first 40 or so Nancy Drew Files mysteries from the 80s with the romance-esque covers

I love my job because...
There are so many reasons but the most important to me is the hope that the books we make change children’s lives in some positive way

I keep my reading pile...
This would be more interesting if the question were “where isn’t your reading pile?” It’s everywhere…except the bathroom. I have a strict rule about that.

Bookstores you should visit before you die:
The Anderson’s location in Downers Grove is one of my all-time favorites for nostalgic reasons.

When I'm not reading, I'll be...
Cooking, gardening, quilting, watching Bears games, listening to Howard Stern, singing loudly in my car, attending a concert or musical, or doing parent-y things with my husband, son, and dogs.

If you could make one wish that was guaranteed to come true—what would you wish for?

Madison is a small town in the Mojave dessert on the road between nothing and nowhere. It's an unremarkable speck on the map, which is perfect for protecting the town's secret. Because in Madison, everyone can make  one wish on their eighteenth birthday—and that wish always comes true.

Most of Eldon's classmates have had their wishes picked out for months, even years. Not Eldon. He's seen how wishing has hurt the people around him. His parents' marriage is strained, his sister is a virtual ghost in their house, his ex-girlfriend is dating his ex-friend...where does he even begin?

One thing is for sure: Eldon has only twenty-six days to figure it out—and the rest of his life to live with the consequences.
