Darcy & Elizabeth

Linda Berdoll is the author of the number one best-selling Jane Austen sequel—her first novel, Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife.  Linda Berdoll is a self-described “Texas farm wife” whose interest in all things Austen was piqued by the BBC/A&E mini-series of Pride and Prejudice.  Four years and much research later, Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife (originally titled The Bar Sinister) appeared, to the acclaim of readers and the horror of Jane Austen purists.  Darcy & Elizabeth (May 2006) is the continuing saga of one of the most exciting, intriguing couples in the Jane Austen sequel literature.  Linda Berdoll and her husband live on a pecan farm in Del Valle, Texas.  Although she admits that she eloped in a manner similar to Lydia Bennet’s, to her great fortune it was with Darcy, not Wickham.

We're excited to share that Wanted and Wired by Vivien Jackson has been included in Omnivoracious’ round-up of “The Best Romance Novels of 2017!”

Adrian Liang at Omnivoracious says: “I've been keeping my eyes open for a romance novel that gleefully sets its hero and heroine in the near future and gives them a storyline that couldn't work in any other setting. Wanted and Wired does all that… if your pulse rate accelerates at the thought of sexy sci-fi, give this action-filled romance a try.”

We're excited to share this fantastic Library Journal review of Mister Tender's Girl by Carter Wilson: "Wilson (Revelation) does a bang-up job of transforming a real news story (the 2014 Slender Man stabbing) into a can't-put-down thriller that will reverberate with readers. The characters are well drawn, the plot hums, the creepiness level is high, and you won't see the ending coming. VERDICT Fans of psychological suspense shouldn't miss this great thrill ride."

It's been twelve years since tragedy struck the senior class of Long Acre High School. Only a few students survived that fateful night—a group the media dubbed The Ones Who Got Away.

Liv Arias thought she'd never return to Long Acre—until a documentary brings her and the other survivors back home. Suddenly her old flame, Finn Dorsey, is closer than ever, and their attraction is still white-hot. When a searing kiss reignites their passion, Liv realizes this rough-around-the-edges cop might be exactly what she needs…

Liv's words cut off as Finn got closer. The man approaching was nothing like the boy she'd known. The bulky football muscles had streamlined into a harder, leaner package and the look in his deep green eyes held no trace of boyish innocence.

Kirkus also gave a stellar review to The Last Wolf by Maria Vale: "The scenes showing the dark, primal attraction between Silver and Tiberius can become addictive for readers —a dense, gooey chocolate cake in page form. A wonderfully descriptive paranormal romance that breathes some much-needed life into the subgenre.”

We're excited to share that Scandalous Ever After by Therese Romain was also chosen as an NPR Best Book of 2017 in the "Love Stories" category!

“I only discovered Theresa Romain this summer, and then I lost several weeks of my life reading everything she had ever written. Scandalous Ever After is actually Book 2 in a series set in England’s horse-racing scene, but it stands perfectly well on its own. If you like Regency romances, sensitively-written heroes and consent as one of the hottest parts of sex, you’ll definitely fall for the widowed Lady Kate and her old friend, Evan.” -NPR

We're thrilled to share some exciting news about The Radium Girls by Kate Moore.

The Radium Girls was voted Best History & Biography in the Goodreads Choice Awards of 2017!

“Taking place under the shadow of the first World War, bestselling author Kate Moore’s The Radium Girls traces the lives of the hundreds of young women who toiled and suffered amid the radium-dial factories. What follows is a true story of awe-inspiring strength in the face of scandal and gruesome corruption. This is Moore’s first nomination in the Goodreads Choice Awards and her first win in the Best History & Biography category.” - Goodreads

NPR also recognized The Radium Girls as a Best Book of 2017 in the "For History Lovers" category!

“After World War I, many women worked in factories painting light-up dials. Not long after, they started to get sick. The companies claimed not to know why. The women knew better; they were being poisoned by the radium in their glowing paint. This isn't an easy read; The Radium Girls viscerally describes both the pain these women suffered and their struggle for justice in a legal system designed to favor corporations. At times, it reads like a true-crime story (radium killed these young women, but the companies murdered them), but there's still a hint of hope at the end.” - NPR

The incredible true story of the women who fought America's Undark danger

The Curies' newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the nation as the fresh face of beauty, and wonder drug of the medical community. From body lotion to tonic water, the popular new element shines bright in the otherwise dark years of the First World War.

Meanwhile, hundreds of girls toil amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The glittering chemical covers their bodies from head to toe; they light up the night like industrious fireflies. With such a coveted job, these "shining girls" are the luckiest alive ― until they begin to fall mysteriously ill.

But the factories that once offered golden opportunities are now ignoring all claims of the gruesome side effects, and the women's cries of corruption. And as the fatal poison of the radium takes hold, the brave shining girls find themselves embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of America's early 20th century, and in a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights that will echo for centuries to come.

Written with a sparkling voice and breakneck pace, The Radium Girls fully illuminates the inspiring young women exposed to the "wonder" substance of radium, and their awe-inspiring strength in the face of almost impossible circumstances. Their courage and tenacity led to life-changing regulations, research into nuclear bombing, and ultimately saved hundreds of thousands of lives...

VOYA Magazine gave As You Wish by Chelsea Sedoti a "VOYA Perfect 10," the highest rating VOYA gives in its reviews.

The glowing review says, "The descriptions of the town, from the surrounding emptiness of the desert to the abandoned half-finished homes, creates a strong exterior atmosphere reflecting the interior isolation felt by many of the characters... Depending on the reader, this novel offers different levels of intensity, starting with the everyday sort of teen troubles, progressing to difficult family dynamics, and reaching up to the ethical dilemmas wishing can create—all while being easy to read and hard to put down."

We are also pleased to share the following review of Plague Land by Alex Scarrow.

VOYA says Plague Land "will immediately engross and terrify readers with the gruesome details and hopeless plight of the main characters. Despite the bleak situation, readers will be catapulted through the story, even if they are forced to wonder at nearly every chapter how the characters will get through the next grim challenge. This book is great for readers who enjoy apocalyptic and zombie reads.”

What VOYA has to say about Before I Let Go by Marieke Nijkamp: “The short chapters and suspenseful tone model some aspects of Nijkamp’s bestseller This is Where It Ends (Sourcebooks, 2016/VOYA February 2016), while Before I Let Go tells a fresh story that strays from traditional, sometimes predictable, YA plotlines. Nijkamp presents content on sexuality and bipolar disorder, providing a diverse range of teen readers with relatable situations and characters… readers who appreciate suspense will enjoy this book.
