Agile Publishing Model.

Futurist David Houle

Welcome to the future!  The future of humanity and the future of publishing.

I am very excited about my new book Entering the Shift Age and the new model of publishing Sourcebooks has created, the Agile Publishing Model (APM). The APM is an innovative platform that allows authors to make their content available faster and in a more flexible format. For example, to suit your needs and interests as readers, Sourcebooks offers a variety of ways to purchase the content of Entering the Shift Age, either in individual parts (“mini eBooks”) or as a whole. (Check out “How to Purchase: The Agile Way”.) You can learn more about the APM by watching the video below.

This is part of the future of publishing. Now let’s turn toward our own future, the future of humanity.

We now live in the Shift Age, a time of transformation that will be regarded by future historians as one of the most significant periods in human history. The Shift Age is one of those inflection points or times when much of humanity will change how we live, how we think, how we interact with each other and what we do.

Entering the Shift Age: Content Review

Chapter Sixteen: The Ascendency of Women

The Shift Age will be a time of ascendency for women. There will be a greater alteration in the view of gender and in the equalization of women with men than in any prior age. When the Shift Age gives way to the next age—and we will look at when that might be and what might be next, at the end of this book—one of the clear historical realities will be how the entire view of gender will have undergone unprecedented change.

This of course is due in part to the great flow toward equality for women that occurred in the Information Age. In the 10,000 years of the Agricultural Age and 300 years of the Industrial Age, there was a need for physical strength in much of the work place. Working the fields with tools, forging iron or constructing buildings without machines required strength. Then when machines were invented, they required strength to operate. So the economy and its growth were largely reliant upon physical strength, and men’s bodies were generally stronger and more suited to strenuous labor. This meant the development of the dual roles of the man who went out into the world to work and the woman who did the work of the home. Similarly, in war, men were the ones in combat, while women tended to play a sideline role or were kept removed from the action.

Chapter Fifteen: The Shift Age Generations

The Shift Age is a time of great generational transfer of power, influence, and authority. It is perhaps the greatest generational transfer at the greatest speed in human history.

Looking at history and looking at the world through the lens of generations can, just like any lens or filter, be limiting in its scope. Generalities prevail, values are assigned, and tens of millions of people are grouped together despite the full spectrum of individuality and uniqueness that we represent. That said, viewing the world through the lens of generations is helpful in assessing where we have been and where the changes in the world will trend. And there are two distinct generations that are and will be in ascendency in the Shift Age: the Millennials and the Digital Natives. Understanding these generations is crucial to succeeding in the Shift Age.

Chapter Fourteen: An Evolutionary Shift in Consciousness

Years ago, when I was first formulating my thoughts about the Shift Age, one of the initial driving concepts was that humanity would, sometime in the not too distant future, experience an evolutionary shift in consciousness. Two years before my first book “The Shift Age” was published, I launched the blog www.evolutionshift.com for this reason. When asked about the title, I simply stated my belief in this impending change that was why I chose the name. I had steeled myself for negative response. After all, it was a pretty radical thought. What surprised me, however, was the lack of ridicule I received. If this idea was not always accepted and embraced, it was at least something people considered.

There are several large contexts that most people have experienced that have opened them up to the possibility that this new evolutionary shift in consciousness might occur. These include: the passage to a new century, a new age and a new decade; the “dawning of the Age of Aquarius” for those that follow astrology, an idea around since the 1960s; and the increased awareness of the Mayan Prophecy of 2012, which predicts a transformative change for humanity on 12/21/12. All of these things have made people more receptive to at least the consideration that the age we are in may well usher in a new consciousness.
