Agile Publishing Model.

Futurist David Houle

Welcome to the future!  The future of humanity and the future of publishing.

I am very excited about my new book Entering the Shift Age and the new model of publishing Sourcebooks has created, the Agile Publishing Model (APM). The APM is an innovative platform that allows authors to make their content available faster and in a more flexible format. For example, to suit your needs and interests as readers, Sourcebooks offers a variety of ways to purchase the content of Entering the Shift Age, either in individual parts (“mini eBooks”) or as a whole. (Check out “How to Purchase: The Agile Way”.) You can learn more about the APM by watching the video below.

This is part of the future of publishing. Now let’s turn toward our own future, the future of humanity.

We now live in the Shift Age, a time of transformation that will be regarded by future historians as one of the most significant periods in human history. The Shift Age is one of those inflection points or times when much of humanity will change how we live, how we think, how we interact with each other and what we do.

  • Writers will have ever more direct connection to the reader/consumer and that vertical writing comparatives will occur such as Pandora does now for radio. Providing customized recommendations of authors or books.
  • Augmented reality glasses will be used to enhance study and interfaces with the arts. One will view a picture and see all the information about that painting; who painted it, when it was painted, and the history of its ownership.
  • The markets and the business models for the visual arts will be split between the market for the physical art objects and the market for the digital images of the physical object. This reflects the dual realities of screen and physical as discussed several places elsewhere in this book.
  • There will be collective interaction between the artist and the audience in all art forms
  • The performing arts will no longer be contained in traditional venues but will break out to anywhere and everywhere.
  • Connectivity and social media will allow distant but connected audience members to experience and participate in theater.
  • Holography will be fused into standard methods of performance
  • Projections will be everywhere, not just on flat screens.

The Overarching Concepts here are:

  • The Arts will move out beyond their traditional housings
  • The Arts will be impacted by the Accelerating Electronic Connectedness
  • The Arts will be more of a shared experience between artists and the audiences
  • The business models, largely based upon the physical reality will now develop dual business models, one for the physical reality and another for the screen reality.
