Agile Publishing Model.

Futurist David Houle

Welcome to the future!  The future of humanity and the future of publishing.

I am very excited about my new book Entering the Shift Age and the new model of publishing Sourcebooks has created, the Agile Publishing Model (APM). The APM is an innovative platform that allows authors to make their content available faster and in a more flexible format. For example, to suit your needs and interests as readers, Sourcebooks offers a variety of ways to purchase the content of Entering the Shift Age, either in individual parts (“mini eBooks”) or as a whole. (Check out “How to Purchase: The Agile Way”.) You can learn more about the APM by watching the video below.

This is part of the future of publishing. Now let’s turn toward our own future, the future of humanity.

We now live in the Shift Age, a time of transformation that will be regarded by future historians as one of the most significant periods in human history. The Shift Age is one of those inflection points or times when much of humanity will change how we live, how we think, how we interact with each other and what we do.

Creativity, in the broadest sense, is the most important quality humanity needs today.

The good news is that most children start off being creative. The Digital Natives are therefore not only the most connected generation ever, they are also the most creative. They are children who can and will combine the connected digital world with innate creativity to change the world. We need them to do so. To help them achieve this, education at all levels must be reshaped to nurture and foster creativity, particularly with this Shift Age generation. They are the future and it will be important for all humanity for them to be as creative as possible. They represent a generation that will show up and grow up in the world dramatically differently than any prior generation. We must not as members of these generations, try to stamp out their creativity but encourage and enable it.

In summary, the field of education at all levels is about to undergo incredible transformation in the Shift Age. Old structures will give ways to new ones. New technologies and use of them will flood into educational institutions at all levels. Lifelong learning will become ever more widespread. The Digital Natives, as the students and customers of education going forward will alter pedagogy.

Through the lens of the Ages, the structures of education created during the Agricultural and Industrial Ages worked well for those times. The Information Age initiated technological changes with the introduction of computers and connectivity to classrooms and set the stage for the transformation of education in the Shift Age.

As stated in Part Three, the definition of “transformation” is “a change in nature, shape, character and form.” This is an appropriate description for what is about to happen in education in the Shift Age.
