Agile Publishing Model.

Futurist David Houle

Welcome to the future!  The future of humanity and the future of publishing.

I am very excited about my new book Entering the Shift Age and the new model of publishing Sourcebooks has created, the Agile Publishing Model (APM). The APM is an innovative platform that allows authors to make their content available faster and in a more flexible format. For example, to suit your needs and interests as readers, Sourcebooks offers a variety of ways to purchase the content of Entering the Shift Age, either in individual parts (“mini eBooks”) or as a whole. (Check out “How to Purchase: The Agile Way”.) You can learn more about the APM by watching the video below.

This is part of the future of publishing. Now let’s turn toward our own future, the future of humanity.

We now live in the Shift Age, a time of transformation that will be regarded by future historians as one of the most significant periods in human history. The Shift Age is one of those inflection points or times when much of humanity will change how we live, how we think, how we interact with each other and what we do.

The only sure thing is that in the Shift Age, actual discussion about creating synthetic life will occur for the first time.

Biology and Technology Merge

The Shift Age will see a fundamental change in the definitions of the words biology and technology. Though it may take years for the dictionary definitions shown above to change, they are already beginning to change in the world today in the Shift Age. Here are some of the developments ahead that will prompt redefinition:

  • Man-made technology will become part of biological man through bionics and implants
  • Man-made technology will be connected seamlessly to brains and neurological pathways in the body so that such things as bionic limbs will respond to directive thoughts from the brain
  • Genetics and stem cells will be used more frequently to create artificial organs in the laboratory
  • DNA and enzymes are being incorporated into computing, creating "biological" chips and computers
  • The creation of artificial meat in laboratory. Living, organic, healthy food, created in laboratories will replace the live animals we consume that have been brutalized and drugged.
  • Artificial insects and birds to perform the functions in nature, such as pollination These can be used for areas under ecological stress
  • Computers will be developed that are programmed to emote and that through time can develop true human emotions
  • This is just a partial list to convey some of the developments in the completely new and uncharted world that will be the result of merging man-made with nature made. These efforts will make us reconsider what is from nature and what is from man. What is biological and what is technological. The development of much of this merging will occur during the Transformation Decade and will not reach the market or impact the daily lives of individuals until the 2020s.

The Shift Age will be the first age in human history when biology and technology merge in ways that will force us to rethink both words.

The merging of biology and technology will bring not just a change of definitions, but how we look at life and the definition of life itself.
