Welcome to the future! The future of humanity and the future of publishing.
I am very excited about my new book Entering the Shift Age and the new model of publishing Sourcebooks has created, the Agile Publishing Model (APM). The APM is an innovative platform that allows authors to make their content available faster and in a more flexible format. For example, to suit your needs and interests as readers, Sourcebooks offers a variety of ways to purchase the content of Entering the Shift Age, either in individual parts (“mini eBooks”) or as a whole. (Check out “How to Purchase: The Agile Way”.) You can learn more about the APM by watching the video below.
This is part of the future of publishing. Now let’s turn toward our own future, the future of humanity.
We now live in the Shift Age, a time of transformation that will be regarded by future historians as one of the most significant periods in human history. The Shift Age is one of those inflection points or times when much of humanity will change how we live, how we think, how we interact with each other and what we do.
At this juncture the conversation about humanity’s effect on earth is a largely negative one, highlighting all the things our species does that have adverse consequences, debated only by the degree of the effect. In the Shift Age, though, I believe that the thinking will become much more proactive—not just what we can do to slow down harmful practices and trends, but what we might be able to do, create, and invent that could positively change or reverse these threatening trends.
As we will discuss at length in the chapter on energy, humankind must now start to think holistically and systemically, relative to our relationship to Earth. That is why the Gaia concept is worth holding. We all know now that a coal-powered electric plant anywhere in the world can affect the air somewhere else in the world. We know now that a tsunami-damaged nuclear plant in Japan can make tuna in the Pacific radioactive and debris from it can wash up on North American shores. So the Earth Century is the first century when humanity will live under a daily reality that whatever we do, individually and collectively, will have an effect, positive or negative, on the planet we share.
Living in the Earth Century is a Shift Age reality. The longer we remain passengers and not crew, the more urgent these creations and inventions become. Welcome to the Shift Age!
