Welcome to the future! The future of humanity and the future of publishing.
I am very excited about my new book Entering the Shift Age and the new model of publishing Sourcebooks has created, the Agile Publishing Model (APM). The APM is an innovative platform that allows authors to make their content available faster and in a more flexible format. For example, to suit your needs and interests as readers, Sourcebooks offers a variety of ways to purchase the content of Entering the Shift Age, either in individual parts (“mini eBooks”) or as a whole. (Check out “How to Purchase: The Agile Way”.) You can learn more about the APM by watching the video below.
This is part of the future of publishing. Now let’s turn toward our own future, the future of humanity.
We now live in the Shift Age, a time of transformation that will be regarded by future historians as one of the most significant periods in human history. The Shift Age is one of those inflection points or times when much of humanity will change how we live, how we think, how we interact with each other and what we do.
I have advised many CEOs that though they cannot immediately move away from management structures, they must start to think of management as moving toward the model of a net. Nets have nodes. Corporate nodes might be finance, sales, R&D, and marketing. Management will now be thought of as nodal. This will result in huge changes in how companies operate. Connected networks move information much faster than hierarchies, so companies can and will make faster decisions and move more quickly in the marketplace. This move to networks and nodal management will empower women as social connectedness will trump hierarchical authority. In Chapter 26 we look at how power will move from Control Power [read hierarchical] to Influence Power [read networked]. All of this fundamental change in how organizations operate and how power is changing will amplify this ascendant arc for women in the Shift Age.
So there are many dynamics of the Shift Age that clearly point to it being the first age in which women will be truly ascendant. While actual physical strength and power may be an advantage men continue to have over women, the old social, cultural and economic power that has traditionally defaulted to men will rapidly fall away. That said, men need not worry that they will be eclipsed or lose relevance in this shift.
The Ascendency of Women in the Shift Age is not a battle of the sexes won by women and should not be looked at that way. Rather it is a very significant historical evolutionary step in the humanity long history of both sexes. Most, if not all of the social, physical and cultural forces that have defined men and women since the beginning of the Agricultural Age are in dramatic shift. Future historians will look back at the Information Age as the seeding and the beginning of these shifts that are and will happen in the Shift Age. The Shift Age will be viewed by these future historians, male and female, as the first age of humanity when women finally and fully shared in the shaping of history.
I sense that some of this massive shift will result in the redefining of gender as it relates to human society. The Shift Age will usher in a reconsideration or an extreme lessening of gender differences and social roles. Perhaps the only definition that will be in place is the gender distinction of childbirth. This in fact could actually accentuate and amplify the ascendency of women in a world where much of the global issues we now face flow from the significant population explosion of the last 75 years.
