Welcome to the future! The future of humanity and the future of publishing.
I am very excited about my new book Entering the Shift Age and the new model of publishing Sourcebooks has created, the Agile Publishing Model (APM). The APM is an innovative platform that allows authors to make their content available faster and in a more flexible format. For example, to suit your needs and interests as readers, Sourcebooks offers a variety of ways to purchase the content of Entering the Shift Age, either in individual parts (“mini eBooks”) or as a whole. (Check out “How to Purchase: The Agile Way”.) You can learn more about the APM by watching the video below.
This is part of the future of publishing. Now let’s turn toward our own future, the future of humanity.
We now live in the Shift Age, a time of transformation that will be regarded by future historians as one of the most significant periods in human history. The Shift Age is one of those inflection points or times when much of humanity will change how we live, how we think, how we interact with each other and what we do.
Robots have always been the poster child of the future. Robots have populated science fiction as the non-human or the machine humanoid. We have a well developed, Hollywood induced anthropomorphic vision of what they will look and act like. While that will of course become reality, there will be many other aspects in the now exploding field of robotics that will also transform humanity. Currently there are widely available robots that clean floors and perform precision work on assembly lines
Manufacturing has already been transformed and will continue to be. An increasing amount of manual labor will become robotic. Health care will have wide spread use of robotics. The young and particularly the elderly will have a lot of time interfacing with robots. The young, because they will grow up with robots and the elderly, because they will be helped and monitored at home. There will be hidden robotics in much of what we buy or interact with in the years ahead.
There will be, perhaps not until the 2020s, the field of robotics that will create companions for humans just like those science fiction novels and movies we have consumed. Is it real or is it a robot? In the Shift Age, the science fiction view of robots will start to become a reality. As with all the other developments around the merging of biology and technology, this will come up against some legacy morality. Robotics as a field, as an industry as a force in society is here and in a rapid state of development.
As robots move ever more toward human work and human behavior, so humans will increasingly have more technology in our bodies with bionics.
