Agile Publishing Model.

Futurist David Houle

Welcome to the future!  The future of humanity and the future of publishing.

I am very excited about my new book Entering the Shift Age and the new model of publishing Sourcebooks has created, the Agile Publishing Model (APM). The APM is an innovative platform that allows authors to make their content available faster and in a more flexible format. For example, to suit your needs and interests as readers, Sourcebooks offers a variety of ways to purchase the content of Entering the Shift Age, either in individual parts (“mini eBooks”) or as a whole. (Check out “How to Purchase: The Agile Way”.) You can learn more about the APM by watching the video below.

This is part of the future of publishing. Now let’s turn toward our own future, the future of humanity.

We now live in the Shift Age, a time of transformation that will be regarded by future historians as one of the most significant periods in human history. The Shift Age is one of those inflection points or times when much of humanity will change how we live, how we think, how we interact with each other and what we do.

We will be taking a quick look at technology in the Shift Age. One of the technologies that relates to a new developing consciousness is brain wave computer interface. This technology is in its infancy but will develop rapidly in the next few years. It will give us the ability to interact directly with computing devices using our brainwaves. Wearing a headset that maps our brainwaves, we will be able to think of functions and tasks and have the computing device perform them. Think about how we, particularly the Digital Natives, will quickly develop levels of concentration of laser like precision.
This technology will also come to the gaming world, ultimately rendering the hand held controller obsolete, or optional. Imagine competing with another gamer who also has a headset that maps their brainwaves into the game. If you lose your concentration, you will most likely lose.

From there, it's not too much of a leap from direct brain interaction with computers and advanced gaming devices to direct brain wave interaction with another human brain.

What will this next evolutionary shift of consciousness look like?

Open up to envisioning what it will be may be hard for many to do. Some people have a sense of what it might be, what it might feel like and its inevitability. Others may have no way to understand what it might be or even accept the reality of it happening. For those of you that are dismissive, please remember that there will be as much change in the next few decades as occurred in the last thousand years.
Think back to the year 2000 and imagine what your response would have been had I told you then that within 10 years you would carry 1,000 CDs in your pocket, 100 books in your purse or briefcase, that you would have a few hundred friends connected to you sharing daily events and pictures, that you would carry one device in your pocket that handled email, contacts, took photos and videos, provided directions to where you wanted to go, and a portal to answer any question you had about anything. Simply put, you would have if I was crazy or not feeling well. Now realize that all of this is the result of technology- smart phones, iPods, Kindles and tablets - that you can hold in your hand.
