Welcome to the future! The future of humanity and the future of publishing.
I am very excited about my new book Entering the Shift Age and the new model of publishing Sourcebooks has created, the Agile Publishing Model (APM). The APM is an innovative platform that allows authors to make their content available faster and in a more flexible format. For example, to suit your needs and interests as readers, Sourcebooks offers a variety of ways to purchase the content of Entering the Shift Age, either in individual parts (“mini eBooks”) or as a whole. (Check out “How to Purchase: The Agile Way”.) You can learn more about the APM by watching the video below.
This is part of the future of publishing. Now let’s turn toward our own future, the future of humanity.
We now live in the Shift Age, a time of transformation that will be regarded by future historians as one of the most significant periods in human history. The Shift Age is one of those inflection points or times when much of humanity will change how we live, how we think, how we interact with each other and what we do.

Energy is and will be one of the most important issues for humanity in the Shift Age. This is no different that any of the prior ages. Energy has always been important, as it is the lifeblood of society. It has always been prized, and has created great wealth, as it is essential to the functioning of the economy. With the move from the Agricultural to the Industrial Age and the discovery and use of fossil fuels, energy became a primary ingredient to life, economic growth and the glories of all that has happened in the last 200 years.
There have been hundreds of books written about energy, different sources of energy, and the solutions to change what is clearly a dangerous situation with energy relative to earth. Many of these books are written by some of the smartest energy experts and scientists alive today. As a futurist I embrace all the great thinking that is being brought to the field of energy in the early part of this century. As a futurist I look to how humanity must navigate this time in its’ history of energy use. Therefore, this chapter only speaks to the high level conceptual conversation that must be had as we fully enter the Shift Age.
Energy, along with the explosive growth in population, was one of the reasons that more wealth was created in the 20th century that in all history before. Energy fuels wealth creation.
Think of all the inventions of the 20th century mentioned earlier and many of them created new, growing needs for energy. Be it electricity, the internal combustion engine, airplanes, or suburbia, much of what was invented was based upon some source of energy. The economic expansion and increase in the standard of living around the world since WWII was to a large degree, based upon energy, access to energy and lowering the costs of producing and using energy.
