Agile Publishing Model.

Futurist David Houle

Welcome to the future!  The future of humanity and the future of publishing.

I am very excited about my new book Entering the Shift Age and the new model of publishing Sourcebooks has created, the Agile Publishing Model (APM). The APM is an innovative platform that allows authors to make their content available faster and in a more flexible format. For example, to suit your needs and interests as readers, Sourcebooks offers a variety of ways to purchase the content of Entering the Shift Age, either in individual parts (“mini eBooks”) or as a whole. (Check out “How to Purchase: The Agile Way”.) You can learn more about the APM by watching the video below.

This is part of the future of publishing. Now let’s turn toward our own future, the future of humanity.

We now live in the Shift Age, a time of transformation that will be regarded by future historians as one of the most significant periods in human history. The Shift Age is one of those inflection points or times when much of humanity will change how we live, how we think, how we interact with each other and what we do.

What is Agile Publishing? The Agile Publishing Model, created with Sourcebooks, is a highly interactive, fast-to-market new form of publishing books.  I will write parts of books and they will be published in electronic form. These ebooks will be rapidly published, with the purpose of being read and reacted to.  You will get to react to them, comment on them, and interact with me. This will continue until the collaborative process results in the release of a print book by the end of the year.

So it’s going to be agile because it’s going to be fast, because it’s social, because it’s interactive, electronic, multimedia, and one of the models of the future of publishing. This will be an arc of creation, interaction, and collaboration through a number of months finally memorialized in a full, complete book available in both print and electronic forms.

Please join me in creating and defining one of the future forms of publishing as we enter the Shift Age.

Are you saying that books published under this model will essentially be collaborative works or are you simply creating the book that the most people voted for?
Social media already provides the means to interface with your potential and actual readership while Apple's new publishing platform will enable you to produce multimedia books very quickly(text, photos video etc). I guess my question is, aside from providing excerpts along the way, what is new about Agile?
I can see that getting feedback throughout the writing process will be useful from a writer's point of view but fine tuning the book in response to it will lengthen not shorten the authorship process.
Also, does it not risk alienating the people whose input never made the fianl cut?
Best wishes, Tom

Thank you very much for the question.

Where the Agile Publishing Model differs a little from traditional social media author interaction is that the goal of the program is to build a community around the creation of the book - and around the book itself.

Additionally, our author David Houle will set the direction for the content and be leading the conversation, but the community will have the opportunity to provide feedback, direction, ideas, and even criticism.

To those who don't participate in the community, I believe that they will experience Entering the Shift Age in the same way they would another book. I don't think that lack of involvement will alienate them but rather provide a sense of confidence that the work was carefully thought about and crafted in this unique way.

I think it will be fun! Will you join up?

About Entering the Shift Age

Entering the Shift Age by David Houle

Change is everywhere: in how we communicate, what we do for a living, the values we hold, the way we raise our children, even the way we access information. Thanks to a global economy, the force of the Internet, and the explosion of mobile technology, we have—almost imperceptibly—entered into a new era, the Shift Age, in which change happens so quickly that it’s become the norm. We’re undergoing a major collapse of legacy thinking that is eroding many of the thought structures that defined the last 200 years. What are some of the new forces that will shape our lives in the next 20 years?

  • Remote workplaces
  • The cloud
  • 24/7 culture
  • Speed-of-light connectivity
  • The influence of Millennials and Digital Natives
  • And more!

There is no going back to the way things were before. Reality is changing fast, and Entering the Shift Age is your guide to keeping up.
